i. perimeter guard: aerial survey & exploration

[ Poe is making out with getting to know the Intrepid. At the moment he's underneath the ship on a rolling dolly, keeping up a steady stream of commentary to BB-8 while he roots around in an open panel.

BB-8 is next to him, projecting a hologram of the inner workings of the ship. ]

--deflectors aren't bad, but this baby has nothing on an X-wing. No offense. [ That last bit is directed at the ship, which he pats before going back into its insides. ] I'm thinking we can squeeze a little more speed out of these thrusters if we modify the thermal vents. What do you think, buddy?

[ BB-8 chirrups his support for the idea as Poe emerges again, hair sticking up from sweat and face marked with grease. ] Need to clear it with Jim first. Man, if Jess were here, she'd go to town on this thing.

ii. also... perimeter.... guard..........

[ Poe isn't really the weight lifting type. It's boring, for one thing. A static exercise. If he can't be in the air, he'd rather be in motion.

Which is why he's in the Perimeter Guard's fitness area whaling away on a few of the standing targets instead. Kicks, punches, all relatively basic moves executed at high speed. He knows enough to get by in a hand-to-hand combat scenario, but he's no advanced martial artist. The moves he knows are enough to get him a full-body workout, and that's good enough for him. His accuracy isn't great, not when his muscles protest this particularly vigorous abuse, not with the numbness in his arms and legs that gives way to tingling pain somewhere close to the surface of his skin. It makes him grateful the First Order didn't go after his hands. He can deal with the time it takes for the rest to heal.

--Also, he's talking to BB-8 the whole time he moves, conversation punctuated with grunts and the sounds of impact. ]
--can't let ourselves get comfortable, you know? We-- need to be ready to-- move at a moment's notice.

[ He pauses, and BB-8 rolls over to the edge of the practice mat with a towel held in one maintenance grip and a water bottle in another. Poe takes both, taking a drink and wiping his face, speaking while his face is in the towel. ] Need to figure out a high-speed way to get a hold of Rey and Finn, so if they line the portal up or whatever it is they need to do we can hit it together. A kind of emergency signal.

iii. a park

[ He's jogging, focused on the motion of legs and arms, entirely absorbed in the rhythm. BB-8 rolls along in his wake, the droid more interested in their surroundings and the things in them than keeping up. At least since they're in public he's not rambling at his droid this time??

But you can bet if BB-8 sees something interesting or someone familiar, he'll detour away from his owner. ]

iv. a bar!

[ Poe doesn't drink much, and he doesn't let his pilots drink either. It's too much of a risk when they need to be ready to move the second intel or orders come in. Still, he likes people watching, and bars are a pretty good place to do it. (BB-8 elected to stay at the communal housing building.)

He is definitely not trying to avoid sleeping, because he's definitely not getting more tense with every day that goes past. Old habits, though. He's nursing a tonic with lime, since it's what the bar tender suggested for someone who doesn't want alcohol. ]

v. wildcard

[ Something else? Hit me! ]

[ It sure sounded like the beginnings of a lecture. Then again, she hadn’t gotten into a fight with a friend before. There weren’t people around for her to be friends with. No one she could trust. Or any adult figure that wasn’t interested in what parts she could bring.

She stayed quiet as he spoke, swallowing back the words she wanted to say, to interject her point of view. Poe admitted he shouldn’t have snapped at her. There were things he shouldn’t have done, and the same applies to her. That wasn’t how she wanted to tell him of her past. But, he needed to know why it terrified her that much.]

I don’t think you get it, Poe. I don’t think you ever will. [ But she didn’t want to talk about, she didn’t want to argue. She’ll give in. There’s a beat of silence before she speaks again, softly. ]

Apology accepted, and I’m sorry. [ There. Done. He can go about his business now if he wanted. ]

I gave you the chance. [ Maybe not the best time to have explained herself. They were both at fault with this. Both hot headed. Did he really want to know? Will he pity her for it?

She watched him draw a chair over. Seemed like he really wanted to try...and she couldn’t fault him for that. ]

I was left behind on Jakku when I was a child. I remember watching a ship with my family take off without. Couldn’t have been more than five, maybe six. Left there with no explanation, begging for my family to come back. Waited every day on Jakku for my family to come back, even wrote on the walls of the AT-AT Walker I lived in. Marked each day with a tally mark.

The two “friends” I made there, stole the ship I had repaired. Left me there and I didn’t eat for a few days because of it.

When I told you, I’m used to people leaving me, it was the truth.

[There had been a few people who had seen those memories of her either being left behind, starving at night, or having a ship she worked so hard to repair only to be stolen. Everything she had done was for a family that didn't come back for her. That left her for reasons that escaped her. Even telling Dany and Jon her past didn't make her feel as vulnerable as she did now.

There was a strong connection, a bond between her and Poe. He was one of the few people she could call a friend back in their world. Someone she admired and if she wasn't connected to the Force, she would've asked him to be her mentor. Who wouldn't want to learn from him? He was the best for a reason.

When she was done speaking she felt something pricking at the edges of her eyes. Poe had nearly made her cry when he left, and now he was doing it while he was sitting in front of her. It had been quite some time since she last cried. There was a slow intake of breath, and she finds herself looking away from him. When was the last time someone told her they loved her? Not in the romantic way, she could've cared less about that.

But the love of someone who was family to her...something she had been wanting, yearning for so many years.

No, she wouldn't cry. She wouldn't fall apart and allow herself to be weak.]

I understand. [The words were whispered under her breath. She knows people will leave; be it from death, or of their own will. She would be damned, though if she let something happen to the people she cared about. She would fight tooth and nail to keep them safe, which was why it boggled her mind why Poe would take such a stupid (in her opinion) and unnecessary risk... But that's who he was. He lived life to the fullest, and she wouldn't change it for the world.]

It’s okay! We got this!

[ There’s a slow nod of her head. Rey doesn’t quite trust her voice right now. Not with all the emotions running through her. She was holding them back and waiting until she was alone again to release them. Looking at Poe, she saw his out stretched hand and placed her hands in his. She hope he didn’t see the wetness in her eyes.

Yes. They were good.

They were family and they were good. ]
