It was hard to deal with loss. First it was Obi Wan, the one person who could help her with understanding what it meant to be a Jedi and help her understand the Force more. Then, it was Poe. Two different people who meant something to her. Though, she didn't know Obi Wan too well, she considered him a friend and the only link she had to figuring out what she needed to do. She wanted to become stronger, to be able to fight Kylo Ren if (or when) she was able to leave back to her world. It weighed heavily on her that she was supposed to go to Ahch-To to find Luke and bring him to the Resistance. They were counting on her, and she was....she was here.

For Poe, he was a friend and someone she took comfort from. Someone who came from her point in time, more or less, and knew what the Resistance was facing. He had said she had been here before, which didn't make sense to her...and now he was gone. She should've done more, contacted him and checked in on him to make sure he was okay. She tried telling herself that it was for the better, the Resistance needed their best pilot back.

Rey doesn't know how to deal with the loss in any other way other than to keep moving. To keep going forward and focus on a goal. She could figure out a way to train with the Force later, but she needs to be able to fight with a single blade. Fighting with a staff was easy, it came as second nature to her, but something like a sword or a lightsaber was different. So, she went to the training area of the Perimeter Guard to try and train. She went for a practice staff, practicing on a dummy first to warm up. Later, she would try to practice with a sword unless someone offers to spar with her instead....

For Alec/Jace:

When Rey got to the training grounds, she briefly shot a message over to Alec and Jace, letting them know she was already there. She had brought up the idea of sparring with Alec, something for him to take his mind off of things. He mentioned Jace, so it was decided they would all train together. It didn't matter to her who showed up first or if they came together. It would be interesting to train with either of them, considering from their world they were warriors. Plus, Jace was supposed to be great with training someone, especially when it came to handling a sword.

For now, she'd wait by the mat, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of them and looking down at her phone to see if they sent her a test.

Being here for over six months, Jim's grown used to certain things. People leaving isn't too terribly commonplace, granted, but it's not unheard of either, so when Poe vanishes from the Quarantine, it's nothing too shocking or new. It's still something of an unpleasant surprise, as he got along with the pilot and liked working with him, and it's never easy to part ways with a friend like that, especially when it's so sudden.

He's aware this is likely harder on Rey, considering how close she was to Poe, and that he was a friend of hers from home. He's been meaning to check in on her, even if it's just to catch up on things and make sure she's settling in on the guard. When he spots her at the training grounds, it seems as good a time as any.

"Hey," he says by way of greeting, also wanting to make his presence known. She's practicing on a dummy with a staff, so he makes sure to keep to the sidelines. "How're you doing?"

It's a dismissive answer at best, Jim knows that much. He also knows better than to push, though, so for now he lets it go. He's pretty sure he'd only get her to close in on herself even more if he were to insist or call her out on it right now.

"I did, actually. You should come check it out sometime," he gestures a hand vaguely at her, walking around the training mat. "There are plenty of vacancies, you know. If you ever feel like joining the aerial branch of the guard."

Ivar was in the training area when Rey walked in. While it appeared he was in his own world, the chaos of battle had taught him to be aware of his surroundings when people had weapons with them. While he continued to work on his knife skills by himself, he kept stealing glances at Rey, watching her with her staff. She was good, he would admit. He supposed that came from having to look after herself growing up.

When she went for the sword, he approached her. "It's better when you train against someone instead of a figurine with those." Ivar had lots of experience using one as the sword strapped to his side would testify. Despite the disadvantage his legs provided, he often battled his brothers to a draw, if not beating them outright when they sparred.

"Yes, I'm offering. Just hold on a minute." Ivar rolled over to where there were some stools located at the edge of the training room. He grabbed one and dragged it to the center of the room. For fighting with swords, being in his wheelchair was too great of a disadvantage, because he had to stab upwards the entire time. Being on a stool gave him the advantage of being closer to head height, making it easier to match someone's blows.

He looks over her sword with a serious, critical eye. There's no joking around or sarcasm now. Weapons are serious business. "Can you lift it easily? It won't do you any good to practice with a sword that's too heavy." Vikings preferred a one-handed style, keeping their free hand available to use a shield or knife. Ivar tended to lean towards the latter. Being nearly immobile meant a shield did him little good on the field of battle.

Ivar perched on the stool, adjusting his legs so that they wouldn't hit too hard if he landed on the ground. He wasn't about to mention such a weakness to Rey, but even a fall from a short distance had been known to break them, a consequence of his brittle bone disease.

"No, keep what's familiar to you. As long as you can swing the blade without struggling, that's what is important. Now, let's see what you have." He held his sword up one-handed, extending the blade outwards like it was an extension of his arm. There was a look of challenge on his face. He wasn't going to go easy on Rey, but he didn't expect her to be a pushover either.

She had her own memories and Ivar did too. His were full of old battles, scenes from England where they had fought against English knights and vassals. Battles that had been filled with chaos and death. Ivar had loved every minute of it. He'd been born to be a warrior in a society that thrived off fighting.

Ivar brought his own sword up in an arc, letting it slam against her sword with a loud Clang! His blow was a lot stronger than Rey's initial tap, focusing on showing off his full power. To hold back while sparring would mean holding back for real on the battlefield. Ivar, with the deck stacked against him already, couldn't afford to be less than his best.

Ivar's smiling faintly as he fights. This is what he excels at. He might be an irritable, angry teenager with lots of issues, but no one has ever been able to accuse the Viking of not being good at what he was born to do. His rage and spite make him a formidable opponent while his quick thinking helps make him unpredictable.

After parrying her next move, Ivar goes on the offensive, jabbing at her stomach with a quick blow. He's trying to judge her speed and strength, how fast she can bring up her blade to block, and push back against his sword.

She's got some raw talent, Ivar can see that. But she's not used to the movements of a sword, how to handle it, and make the most of the weapon. Training will fix that. Ivar leans far over to the side as he counters the blow she sends his way.

The swords connect again with Ivar's on top. He adjusts his sitting position again to keep from getting too off-balance. He moves his Viking sword around in a circle, trying to force Rey's blade upwards, creating a moment where she'll have an unprotected chest so that he'll have an opportunity to strike at her again.

He can't very well fault Rey for wanting to feel useful, when Jim himself often struggled with not knowing what to do with himself, both here and back in his own world. It's good to have a purpose, no matter how small, an objective to focus on and work towards. Jim's aware that there's only so much he can offer, but at least the shuttle division will be able to go much farther than anyone else on the Perimeter Guard has so far.

"You should come by and see. She's looking pretty stylish, if I may say so myself," he says with a vague air of humor, brow raising at her question, and the faint surprise in her tone.

"Yes, of course. Among other things. I assume you can pilot shuttles, but if not I can always teach you."

Ivar holds the blade at her chest for a moment before he lets it drop, shifting it from one hand to the other, giving his arm a chance to relax. That was a good training session. She was going to be a good challenge. "You've got skill and talent. It just needs to be honed."

He holds the sword with his off-hand. "It's an extension of how your arm works. Make a circle in your mind and split it up into sections like a clock. One, two three, four." He shows the position of the sword at each number. "It's a stabbing weapon, so don't be afraid to really thrust out there, and drive the blade home."

Rey will have to show Ivar just what a lightsaber can do one of these days. Given how much he appreciates good weaponry, he's sure to find such a weapon amazing. He switches the blade back to his dominant right hand, the other dropping down to his side to keep himself balanced on the stool.

He shakes his head at her words. "Apparently, you've learned lesson number one." He taps her blade lightly with his own. "Don't forget to move your feet as you move the sword." That's the great advantage other people have when facing him, though Ivar's learned quite well how to combat an attack from almost any direction.

Then he lifts up his sword, going in for a broad, overhead swing to see how she'll counter it.

When Alec received the message, he sent a text to Jace to be sure that he didn't ignore it since it was from someone he hadn't spoken to as much as Alec had. He was sure that Jace wouldn't turn down an opportunity to spar with someone new, or to show off, but he was so used to keeping track of his parabtai that the action was automatic. He brought his bow, quiver, and the arrows that he'd bought while shopping with Jace instead of the weapons created by the Iron Sisters. it would be impossible to replace those items if they were damaged and Alec doubted that he'd need to kill demons while training with Rey. He also took his usual blades, unable to leave them behind even if he doubted that he'd use them during training.

The weapons were glamoured so no Mundanes would notice them. He didn't bother hiding his marks. There was so much variety in the city that no one seemed to think the black symbols on his skin were weird. As he entered the training area, he checked the weapons racks, noting which Jace might prefer if they decided to show off their training before he headed for Rey. When Alec was sure that he had her attention, he shrugged one shoulder, letting the bow and quiver flicker into sight. "I hope you weren't waiting too long."

Ivar goes on the defensive to block the attack to his shoulder, bringing the sword closer to his body for a counter-move. He looks around for an opening, but sees none to her upper body that he can find. So he swings the blade at her feet in a move more unpredictable than before, trying to get her moving around.

That's Ivar's greatest strength. He doesn't think the same way the same as everyone else does. While this isn't always a good thing, the way he sees people more as chess pieces than those he can connect with, it makes him a fantastic opponent on the battlefield.
