A few days since the memories had stopped and a couple of nights of decent sleep and Shiro was back to his normal self. Now that he was feeling better, he remembered that he had missed something: Keith's birthday. Even Keith had forgotten it with everything that was going on. But Shiro needed to fix that.

As discretely as possible, Shiro had gotten an idea of who Keith's friends here were. Of course he also had some idea based on who had come to see Red when the lion had arrived. Some people had been generally curious while others had clearly heard about the lions from Keith and wanted to meet them in person. So he had used that as an opening to figure out how close Keith was to certain people. Once he had had an idea, he had begun to invite people.

The day of Keith's party, he made an excuse to get Keith out of the house for a while so Ed could come over. He needed help to get the decorations up in a short amount of time, plus surprising Keith wasn't necessarily the best thing to do so letting him know at some point there were people at the house was probably a good thing to do so Shiro would have to meet him or stall for time for everything to get arranged.

Which of course he did eventually have to leave to meet Keith once guests had started to arrive. Soon when he returned, it wasn't quite a surprise party for Keith... just a surprise it was for him.

However, Shiro couldn't leave without putting a party hat on Red. It was a party for her paladin after all so she should be festive.

[ooc: open to CR. Party crashers, be aware there are two robot lions - one the size of a liger - and if the host or guest of honor get annoyed with the party crasher, there will likely be a lion or two ushering them towards the door.

Keith turned when Lyle approached him and then smiled a bit.

"Hey... thanks." He looked a little awkward about the whole ordeal, but definitely thankful. He took the offered gift. "It was kind of a surprise..." He shrugged a little. "You having fun so far?"

"That's usually the point of a surprise party: that its a surprise."

He could see that awkward look. Clearly he didn't get many surprise birthday parties. That was fine since he was having one now and he hadn't run screaming out of the party when he had found out the surprise.

"I am having fun. Your leader puts together a good party."

Sorry, he's just being weird.

"What about you? Are you enjoying it?"

"Ah... well, yeah." He rubbed the back of his neck. Surprise parties were supposed to be a surprise... duh. Get it together, Keith.

He nodded. "Yeah, Shiro's a good guy. He's really been there for me." And then he nodded a bit.

"I'm... yeah. I am. I'm not usually a party person, but this is actually a good one."

"Otherwise they're just normal parties and where is the fun in that?"

Lyle smiled, glancing over in the direction of where Shiro was doing something that the host of a party usually had to do at some point, like refill food. "That's good to hear. He seems like a nice guy from what I've seen of him."

"Really? Just never had parties or you just never really got parties that you liked?"

"It's less startling, for one," Keith offered, his eyebrows bunching together a bit with a sheepish expression.

He nodded about Shiro. "We're pretty close," he said. "I don't know where I'd be without him." Keith's tone, though, suggested that Keith felt he'd be in a much worse situation if it hadn't been for Shiro.

As for parties...? He shrugged. "A little of both, I guess. It was a lot of small stuff... what little I remember from being a kid, but... after my mom left, we didn't really do anything. And once I was on my own, I just stopped even thinking about it altogether. It just didn't seem important anymore."

"Well there is that. Of course, depends on how startling one wants it to be. A banner hanging from the ceiling that's not normally there can be surprising. Fireworks and loud noises are also startling."

Lyle could tell based on the tone that there was something special about the relationship Keith had with Shiro so he wasn't even going to think about making a joke. "I can tell you are. He did all of this for you."

"Well, yeah, I guess when you are alone, you don't really do things like that on your own. Good though you've had the chance to have one like this."

"I would definitely want to avoid having fireworks inside, though," Keith said with a small smirk. He then nodded about Shiro doing the party. It felt like a lot, and, really, in Keith's mind, too much, but Shiro looked like he was happy to do it, so Keith appreciated the thought behind it, and let his friend have fun playing host. It was nice to have something like this... for both of them.

"I really appreciate it."

He shrugged then.

"I guess I just got used to it," he said. "I was on my own for a while." He tried not to dwell on that, though. It had sucked, sure, but he'd gotten by, and then met Shiro, and things got better. It was easier not to really worry about all that anymore. Or think about that year he was alone again after the Garrison announced that the Kerberos mission had been a failure.

"No, I wouldn't think that you would want fireworks inside. Might start a fire. I don't think your neighbors would appreciate that level of startling."

As far as Lyle knew, this wasn't new for Shiro because he'd interacted more with Keith - hence why he'd been surprised by the invite because he wasn't sure if Shiro would have realized. Based on what Keith was saying though, it didn't seem like something Shiro had ever done before.

"You might be having more parties now. Maybe not as big as this, but at least something."

Keith shook his head a little with a slight hypothetical wince at what that might be like. Fireworks inside were a bad thing, definitely. As for more parties...

"Well, I'm not a really big party person. I hope it's not going to be like every weekend or something."

"I doubt every weekend. I wouldn't think someone would have the wherewithal to plan even a small party every weekend. Not unless they decide to plan parties around silly national days like 'sneak zucchini onto your neighbor's porch night' or 'national windmill day'."

And somehow Lyle doesn't get the feeling from Shiro that this would be a thing. Lyle himself wouldn't do it though he might joke he was going to.

"Once in a while."

Keith nodded.

"I think I could handle once in a while." He managed a small smile. "Thanks for coming. I appreciate it."

"No problem. Always fun to celebrate someone's birthday. Looks like you had a pretty good turn out."

It was small, but not just Keith, Shiro, and the lions.

"Yeah." Not too many, but enough that it was definitely a party. It was good. Keith nodded. "It works." He glanced down at the gift Lyle had given him. "Should I open this now or later?" He wasn't picky, and really wasn't planning on doing some giant gift opening session, so he was fine with either option.

"You can open it whenever you want. I'm not picky." Keith was out of the age range (and so were his guests) where the host was trying to keep everyone's attention through coordinated activities so he doubted there was a 'present opening time'. So it was likely now or whenever Keith got back around to it.

"Whenever you feel like it."

Keith nodded.

"Alright. Thanks," he said. "I should probably move around a bit, though. I'll talk to you later, yeah?"

"Yeah probably a good idea. I'll be here. Talk to you later."
