The bits and pieces I heard were that the Death Star had a weakness that was leaked to the Rebellion, and then it was destroyed. In the destruction of the Death Star, it set the Empire back but them and the Rebellion continued to go at it until the war was eventually won by the Rebellion.

Were you part of the Rebellion? [Considering how invested he in this talk, it seemed that way... Or, maybe his home planet had become one of the fighting grounds for the Empire. Jakku was loitered with different Imperial ships from their fight so many years ago.]
