flower festival

In the days leading up to April 2nd, residents new and old may notice advertising around the city, everywhere from digital screens to paper flyers pasted on blank walls, all advertising an upcoming holiday: The Flower Festival. Celebrating springtime, beauty, joy, and togetherness, the festival heavily features floral themes and dancing. The advertising mentions that on April 10th, a paid holiday, there will be a Blossom Picnic, as well as lists of various public dances at clubs or other open venues, and adult raves.

a celebration of spring

The Flower Festival's main event is the Blossom Picnic on April 10th, but it also features traditions of sharing food and drink, and dancing that span over the course of the whole two weeks. There are a large variety of events going on throughout the city, from dancing lessons in any wide variety of traditional dances, to old-fashioned sock hops, to adult raves complete with mild party drugs. Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own event at any point during the festival, and if your character creates an event and hosts it in a top-level, you can submit that thread for extra bonus points.

i. blossom picnic

The main event that kicks off the second week of the Flower Festival is the Blossom Picnic on April 10th. A relaxed and low-key event, it draws several thousand people every year to the spacious Riverview Central Park, where there is a generous lawn lined with various blossoming trees, and families, found families, lovers, and groups of friends are encouraged to lay out a picnic blanket and share food. There will be live bands playing (but not loudly enough to distract from conversation and peacefully watching the petals flutter in the wind), a variety of demonstrations of traditional cultural dances from many different realities and planets, and a ton of ice cream vendors. This is an excellent festival not only for celebrating togetherness with the people who are already important, but for mingling and making new friends.

Characters may either pack their own lunches or they can purchase pre-packed Blossom Festival lunches. Stores and street markets are carrying a wide variety of specialty food that is only available at this time of year - predominantly pastries, an assortment of types of candies, and ice cream treats all in various floral flavors, as well as a sort of ambrosia salad based around a sweet rose-flavored cream and a native fruit that is bright green and tastes like a combination of peach and citrus.

ii. dancing lessons

Starting on April 2nd, there will be dancing lessons offered almost everywhere you look! From partner dances to group dances to line dances; sexy and sensual or innocent and childlike - almost any type of dance you can imagine is represented, from any reality or planet that has people in Riverview Quarantine.

Additionally, the Riverview Central Community Center has multiple rooms blocked off so anyone who knows a dance from home can teach it to others in their community - sharing is caring, after all. Characters are welcome to block off one of these rooms and offer lessons in any dance they happen to know from home (and these sorts of thread starters would be eligible for the mingle AC Point bonus)!

iii. flower festival dancing

This is pretty simply what it says on the tin - in almost every club, community center, or other public space, there will be dancing at almost all hours of the day or night, formal and informal. Musicians bring out their instruments and play in the street for demonstrations of cultural dances and music at the same time as clubs are offering VIP cover charges for exclusive dances, and you can find anything in between.

There are also many low-cover-charge raves that allow under-18s so younger characters can stay up all night and dance like crazy. The legal drinking age in Riverview Quarantine is 14, and so anyone over 14 can enter and indulge in a few drinks, dancing, and playing tag with a non-intoxicating version of the colored powder featured at the adult raves. There is copious amounts of security on site to ensure that everyone is safe, as well as nurses and off-duty police officers to offer advice or care for anyone who overindulges out of lack of experience.

Grab a partner, a group of friends, or just cruise and mingle the various dancing events.

Characters may also notice that most of the street markets and clothing shops are offering clothing that features floral patterns, flowers as accessories, and that show a lot of skin - for men, women, and anyone in between!

iv. adult raves

Advertised on flyers and digital screens around the city, made to pop as if they were under blacklight, is a series of adult raves that are happening in various large empty warehouse spaces around the city, including one that is listed as the danger rave and hosted in an abandoned factory outside the inhabited city walls. With bouncers at the door to ensure that anyone entering is 18+, the raves are comfortably adult in nature. Clothing is optional, showing skin is encouraged, and there are a lot of neatly tucked away spaces for attendees to get some time alone with one or more than one person, as well as spaces intended for orgies. The atmosphere is sex-positive and non-judgemental, open to any orientation or preference, with various forms of protection available for free, however, to ensure that everyone plays safe there are sober security teams out en masse at all premises to oversee the events.

(CW: DRUG USE) In each location, there is one specific room where attendees can enter, and dance or play tag with brightly colored powder that contains small amounts of a legal party drug commonly available in Riverview, which is absorbed through the skin. Not much more intoxicating than having a few beers, the effects of the drug are a pleasant low-key buzzing euphoria, positive sensitivity to touch, a heightening of desires for intimacy, and a mild lowering of inhibitions. Once a character has been hit with the powder, the color lingers on the skin so other attendees can know who has partaken, but once the powder makes contact with a surface it deactivates, meaning that partakers can safely dance with non-partakers without sharing the intoxicating effects.

Please be sure to warn in subject lines for any threads involving drug use. And remember, there is always security to intervene and make sure everyone is safe.

[ He takes the knife and tosses it to the target, there's nothing particularly remarkable about his aim (he hits the target, but not the center) but if Ivar is paying attention, he'll notice Marcel barely has to make an effort to toss the knife, and it ends up buried pretty deep. ]

Absolutely. I, myself, prefer sparring.

[ Figuring out when people are from is quickly becoming a fun hobby. His first thought is cowboy, but he could easily be off the mark by a whole century. ]

[ Marcel laughs. It's the first time he's done it since his arrival to Riverview. ]

Sorry, sorry, didn't mean to offend.

[ he holds up his hands apologetically, playing along. ]

Shouldn't have assumed.

[ Marcel keeps very weird hours, if he sleeps at all it's a couple of hours right after dawn and he spends most of his time outside, finding work to busy himself with.

He's seen most of his floormates by now, coming in and out, he just hasn't been formally introduced. ]

Hey. Pretty well— Are those shared resources?

[ He gestures at the fridge. It's been a couple of days and he hasn't touched anything— that's another notably weird thing too, Marcel doesn't seem to eat. ]

War has a way of sticking with you.

[ It's an assumption but it sounds like a reasonable one. ]

That's pretty generous of you! I'll make it a soft suggestion, then. It's still making up for missed time, isn't it? Not that I think he'll really need the suggestion.

[ She may have just met you, but she believes in you, Taako. She knows you've got this, but she will totally back you up. ]

[Stop this, Líadan, it's too sweet and he doesn't know what to do with it.]

I gotta say, I'm digging the flattery, but if you're just being so nice cause you're after something I'm gonna be heart broken.

[He's just playing. Mostly. Sometimes he's a little suspicious(tm) of people's motives.]

That's right. [He makes a peace sign with his fingers, leaning them playfully against his head before he drops his hand away with a chuckle.] Are you familiar with the term?

It's nothing close to a perimeter guard. You must work hard with a job like that. I wouldn't be able to handle it at all. It sounds scary.

[ Just accept it. Just go with it. ]

New friendships are a theme of this festival. That's what I heard, so I guess my motives aren't entirely pure... and I'd be lying if I said it hasn't crossed my mind to ask you if you could teach me to make these things, but I think that's more your fault than mine.

[ Her cards are on the figurative table here. ]

[ just because carolina's been given an address and vague directions doesn't mean she's really all that sure how the hell she's supposed to get to the new job she's signed up for. she doesn't need to be there for hours yet, but her armour would be out of place and it's been years since she really had to navigate without her hud to help. bajikan doesn't count, not really, because she hadn't had any obligations there.

but this is an obligation, so carolina's pacing the common areas of the floor as she fights to sync her phone and any map functions it has with the wrist device she'd gotten used to on the eluvio. she wants some idea of where she's going before she leaves, even if she's already dressed to go - form-fitting pants suited for training, a cyan stripe up the sides of the legs, a sleeveless shirt that won't get in her way and shows off scarred, toned arms. she's got her bright red hair pulled back in a low braid and a jacket tossed somewhere to put on when she leaves, but that's not going to be for a while yet, with the way this is going.

morgan passes and he's the first floormate that she's seen since she started trying to plan this and she stops, watching him for a moment before she interrupts. ]

Hi. What are the chances you know your way around the city better than I do?

[Trust no one.]

The truth comes out, you're actually from some rival baker out to steal my secrets. I knew it.

[Okay now he's definitely just playing.]

[ And wouldn't you know she draws up a mock serious expression, hand finding her chest. ]

Your skill compelled me. You can't taste such goodness and hold to any sort of deception. It's impossible!

[ She can't hold it that long, though. She's trying. She's tr -- oh, no. No, there it goes. She's about to laugh. ]

I'm impressed!

[ And really, she is if what he said is true. A bit flattered, but that goes without saying. A good nature is certainly something she appreciates, for that matter. ]

I'd say you aren't too terribly far from your goal as you are now. You caught on quicker than I did!

[ their paths have crossed briefly in the short few days carolina's been here, but she hasn't really had much opportunity to talk. considering the close quarters they're all living in, it might be time to change that. she finds peggy on the balcony, not nearly as put together as peggy always seems to be, but she has a look to her that's not sloppy, just a woman worn out from life.

she has a mug in one hand, gesturing to the chair nearest peggy's. ]

How would you feel about company?

[ it's stupid early but carolina's slept for a few hours, so she's up. naturally. she hasn't changed out of the loose clothes she slept in, but her bed's made with military precision. old habits die hard.

she's still pulling her red hair back into a low ponytail as she heads into the kitchen in search of coffee, giving sasuke a nod. ]

Morning.

[ her tone isn't particularly warm, but in that way that suggests that's just how she is. ]

[ Otabek's arms shift around Yuri. If it were anyone else, this person would have been dropped, but this was Yuri. It was different with him. He would always hold onto him tight. Holding onto Yuri comes so naturally. Even with having only spent a few days together, Yuri was his dearest friend. He'd stand there, holding onto Yuri, letting him cling as long as he wanted to.

If there was anyone he would be happy to see, it was Yuri. A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. It was small, rare, and there just for Yuri. His arms tightened a little. ]

Yuri.

[ His tone was happy, as well. He doesn't want to let go of his friend. Not ever if he can avoid it. ]

I just got here. You're here.

[ He hadn't even really considered the fact that Yuri could have been there, and really - it was just now registering. Even after watching him dance, he had been so caught up in the moment, that he wasn't really thinking about it. ]

I've been here a couple of weeks- almost a month. [ Yuri doesn't let go, because Otabek doesn't either. Just hangs on, can't stop smiling. It's almost as good as seeing his grandpa; being confronted with one of the only person's Yuri had actively wanted to see. ]

I can't believe you're here. [ He repeats it, more breathlessly this time, before laughing and hugging the other tight with his arms, gripping the other's shoulders and tucking his head against the other's shoulder, cheek nose turned outward. A little less intimate, a little more appropriate. His soft blond hair probably tickling the other's nose.

Something inside of Yuri felt fractured; sensitive. He sucked in a sharp breath,
swallowed over a lump forming in his throat as his fingertips dug more tightly into the other's jacket, as though he were afraid the other would disappear if he let go.
He hadn't wanted this, not really. Hadn't wanted to bring those he loved or cared for into such a dangerous place- and yet seeing someone from home... it helped to ease some of the longing, some of the homesickness that he'd felt as though it were crushing him. ]

[His grin turns a little teasing as he quirks his brow toward his own first pick, which she had naysayed.] I think we've established that my taste is apparently worse.

[Damen is mostly trying to engage, to be nice, but he is also trying to find a gift for Laurent. He had said, once, that he wished he could court the man as he deserved, graciously and with gifts and tokens of his affection. He has every intention to do so, while they don't have two kingdoms to unify.

She points out a shirt, though, white and long-sleeved, clean lines and sharp tailoring, delicately and not overly adorned, and he lights up a little as he picks it up off the rack.]

This is actually- I thought you said you knew nothing about fashion, but I think he'd love this.

Not today. Sometimes.

[ An interesting, but legitimate question. He tries to not bring fish to the rink, because when he reheats his food there, the entire rink will end up smelling. While he's not exactly friends with everyone he skates with, he'd rather not make any enemies by making the place smell. Though he did often eat it in his own apartment, since it didn't really matter if it smelled like fish there. ]

Usually turkey, though. It's what I was always recommended.

[ And he tried to take the advice of the resources available to him when he was training. His diet was pretty strict, as it was pretty easy to put on weight if he did it wrong. And he couldn't have that when trying to figure skate. ]

[ Otabek hadn't even considered how much he would stand out in the crowd. He typically wore black to avoid exactly that. But with the way this festival was set up, he certainly did. He blinks at his name, and takes a moment. He hadn't really expected to see any other skaters. Or anyone he knew really. And while he didn't know Yuuri well he was a familiar face. ]

Yuuri.

[ He nods. He hadn't really talked to him outside of a little bit of time in Barcelona. He seemed nice, though. ]

I got here a few days ago. Yourself?

[ He's genuinely curious. ]

[ the average age of the tenth floor is uncomfortably low and carolina is decidedly too old for this shit. she's not a particularly warm person to begin with and making conversation is an effort, but when she's busy staring into a cup of hot chocolate in the middle of the night because nightmares are terrible and she has nothing better to do, movement outside the kitchen has the redhead turning to look to the hall. ]

Where are you going at this time of night?

[ they've known each other for like, a day, but carolina's curious. ]

What about you? What sort of place do you come from? [He's curious to know, but at the same time, he wonders if she even feels like talking to him.]

A month...

[ It certainly hadn't been that long since he had last seen Yuri. Interesting. It figures that this place would do something weird like this. He doesn't ask, though, since he's sure that he won't necessarily understand. Regardless, he's happy. He's happy he gets this time with Yuri, even if it is here of all places. He holds him tight and close.

The way he's holding Yuri seems to shift from just supporting him, to an actual hug. His eyes, close when blond locks tickle his nose, and his smile gets just a little bit bigger. A little happier. He shifts his head so the smile isn't for anyone else. ]

I can't believe you're here, either.

[ He's torn on how he feels about it, but decides to settle on happy. He's just happy that he gets this. ]

I haven't been here long.

[ He was excited. Maybe he'd finally get some uninterrupted time with his friend. ]

[Damen's had a few by this point in the night, but his tolerance is pretty impressive - not surprising, for a man his size, and he's spent most of his adulthood drinking at feasts and celebrations. He laughs a little at the comment of the woman beside him, leaning against the counter easily. His face is a bit shiny with sweat, from dancing, and the lion's head on his tanktop is a soft glow on his torso.] Strong sounds perfect. Do they put flowers in everything, though, or is it just for the festivities?

[He takes her hand, leans down to press a chaste kiss to the top of it. It's something obviously trained into him because he goes through the motion without a second thought, greeting her like he would a kyros's daughter or visiting princess, if this were Akielos.] Damen. A pleasure.

[ The crowd around them didn't seem to matter to Yuri one single bit. All that he was interested in was Otabek. His presence, his solid warmth in Yuri's arms. Still not quite able to believe his luck, a shuddering breath leaving him as slowly, he drew his head back. But still didn't make to put his feet on the ground again. ]

Have you seen the others? Victor and the pig are here too. [ Yuri scowls a little to say it, but it's more for show and good measure than any genuine feelings of animosity towards the idea. It's... almost relieving, really. To have something familiar with the deeply bizarre. ] Have you been exploring? Did you eat? Can I show you around?

[ Yuri thinks this is probably the most he's smiled since he'd arrived here, and it's all thanks to Otabek. ]
