It's not a particularly long trip until they reach the waterfalls, at least not as long as the last one. It helps the group is smaller and everyone has both experience and energy to spare, and both he and Bones have made this same trip before, so they know the terrain and the quickest paths all too well. It's also a fairly peaceful trek, with only smaller animals crossing their path, and not a lot of injuries to tell the tale.
Jim's pleased and excited both when they reach their destination, with energy to spare as he uses his scanning equipment to slowly find their way closer to the source of the signal.
It's not easy, though. There's a lot of interference and they end up walking along the rocks around and above the waterfalls for a couple of hours, trying to pinpoint the source. It seems to come from right underneath the falls, though, so eventually they have to spread out and look for another way to get in there. Without a signal to serve as a beacon, they end up looking around blindly, relying on luck more than anything, until they come upon a large hole on the rocky floor a good distance away from the waterfalls, but not yet close to the forest. Not much can be seen when they peer into it, though; it's pitch dark and even with their flashlights, it seems impossible to see whether there's a bottom or how far down it is.
"Think we'll have to climb down there. It's the only way for us to know if it'll take us closer to the source of the signal." And Jim's not about to let this little hiccup stop him, not now when he's come so close. "I'll go in first. Someone else should come with me, just in case something happens. Everyone else can join us once we determine that it's safe."
