Of course they'll be careful. Call this a calculated risk, if you will. Jim for one has a feeling Poe is very much like him in that aspect, which is why he likes that it's him taking that trip down that pit with him first. Better than someone who might panic halfway through. Poe can keep calm in a dangerous and risky situation, it looks like, and has enough presence of mind to think of a solution fast.
