Even throughout most of the events of Carnivale, Beverly has for the most part kept herself buried in work as she doesn't want to give herself much time to brood over the portal - that won't do her or anyone else any good. She does at least sample some of the street food on her lunch breaks and manages to catch a concert or two in the evenings, but most of what she sees of the celebration comes from tending to patients who partied a little too hard. Tonight, though, she finds herself with a day off and no plans, so she wanders the downtown streets, enjoying the bright colors and the music, eventually ending up outside the exhibition hall.

Kink Exhibition. Hmm. Uncertain, she hovers outside the main doors, debating on whether or not she should go in.

Jim has been making plans to visit the expo as soon as he heard of it, though he knew from the start it would take some convincing to get Bones to join him. Even if he has no plans to drag Bones off into some of the racier activities going on at the exhibition, he knows Bones is a very private person, and prone to moments of deep embarrassment or downright mortification over things like this.

Running into a familiar face just as they reach the main doors probably doesn't help, but... well, he's not about to ignore her, either. Without slowing down or thinking twice about it, he guides them both to where she's standing, holding Bones's hand with their fingers laced together.

"Beverly!" Since they're on a first name basis and all. He smiles once she looks over, waving at her with his free hand.

He had no intentions of going near the Carnivale or stepping into that expo. He would have greatly preferred not have agreed to go with Jim, but he knew damn well that he would never say no to him. So he'd steeled himself to the idea of looking at this as clinically as possible and not let his mind drift off too much to...

Shaking his head, he stuffed one hand in his pocket while letting himself get dragged along by his boyfriend. Breathing in softly, he figured he could get through this as long as he didn't think about it too hard. That is, till Jim suddenly changed directions and he saw why. Well, shit.

He didn't actually mean to stop for a moment so that Jim had to pull at him to get him moving again. Granted, he still went, a little begrudgingly as he stayed a little behind Jim and looked at the ground first before at Beverly with an almost smile. "Hello, doctor."

The corner of Beverly's mouth quirks as she watches them approach: the contrast between Jim's casualness and Leonard's embarrassment is an amusing one. Not that she blames Leonard. After all, she isn't too sure about this situation herself. "Good evening! Hope you two are enjoying the Carnivale!"

Jim is well aware of how nervous Bones is right now, but for the moment he doesn't pay it much mind. He knows it's just a matter of easing into it, and really, he intends to approach the expo from a more clinical and informative point of view. Granted, running into Beverly is entirely unplanned, but he just rolls with it.

"It's been alright. We've been keeping busy with work, mostly." He nods to the main entrance. "Thinking of visiting, too? It's got some interesting stuff."

He started to say he's been avoiding it like the plague, but figured it wasn't right or polite of him to be that negative to her. Grousing at Jim was one thing, he really didn't need to go off on her as well. So he did his best to force a smile and nod to Jim's answer.

Instead he looked away a moment and nodded his head just slightly. "Figured it wouldn't hurt to look since he wanted to and seemed to want me to go for some reason." More like Jim looked like he really wanted to go and well, he never was very good at telling the man no. And maybe part of him just rather be with Jim when he went to a place like that. Granted, he should've known he'd already gone on his own.

"Oh! Ahh..." She looks back at the posters plastered on the doors, advertising the different vendors and shows inside. None of it is anything she hasn't heard of (and there's maybe a few things she's experimented with) but... her sex life has been, well...

Quiet.

"I don't know."

Quiet or not, her sex life really doesn't mean she can't have interest in this sort of event. Jim would be curious to take a peek even if he didn't have anyone, honestly, and if nothing else he'd want to see what kind of things people are into— particularly people from other worlds and universes. Never too late to learn.

"Come on, now. Where's your sense of adventure?" He tips his head towards the door, eyebrows raised. "Come with us. It'll be fun."

Shaking his head at Jim, he about nearly rolled his eyes. He understood that reluctance to be honest and really, he didn't see this as an 'adventure' at all. But he liked seeing the man happy regardless. So he focused his attention on Dr. Crusher and smiled just a bit before shifting closer to offer her his other arm since he was holding Jim's hand for dear life.

"Look at it this way. If they are glamorizin' a crazy thing like this, there's bound to be some type of medical issue we'll have to deal with later. May as well know what we're in for?" Whether that was the reason for it or not, it just felt a helluva lot easier goin' with that. "Join us?"

"Oh well then!" She says, eyes dancing as she takes Leonard's proffered arm. "It it's for medical research, I suppose I have no choice, do I?"

Her grip on his arm, however, is tentative, like she might be thinking about bolting, despite her light-hearted words. Joking has always been one of her default defense mechanisms when she's feeling nervous or awkward. Sometimes it serves her well, other times, not so much. She hopes this time it will fall into the former category because she is curious about what's behind those doors. And it helps tremendously that Leonard seems to share in some of her trepidation.

Alas, Beverly isn't lucky to get someone who'll wait for her to feel a little more sure. Jim figures that standing around waffling and overthinking will only make her even more nervous and hesitant, so he doesn't give her the time. Tugging lightly on Bones's hand, he urges them both along as he leads the way past the main entrance.

"Excellent! Come on, then." Tipping his head at Bones, "And 'glamorizing' might be a little harsh, don't you think? You know kinks have been around for millennia. Isn't it better that people are at least properly informed?"

"Medical research never comes back void." He teased softly. Not that he felt any better about venturing in there. Even if he did have a mild curiosity of what might be featured inside. His private nature just told him this was a bad idea and most reflexes told him to get the hell on out of there.

But then, Jim wasn't one to let him back out of things and he honesty didn't think he could deal with Jim looking disappointed neither.

So he let himself get pulled along. "It really depends, Jim. If it's something dangerous or risky, then yes, it's being glamorized. But some things are safe so probably doesn't matter none. Pends on how well they instruct these people to not get too damn cocky and hurt themselves." Poor instruction in some 'kink' could be very dangerous or harmful. All depended on how well the participants learned and followed those steps. "So if it is well informing folks, good for them."

Beverly, however, is not so easily persuaded. She plants her feet firmly, though this does mean letting go of Leonard. "Wait a minute. I think we need to lay down some parameters before we go in."

Jim wasn't really expecting a full stop, so he ends up losing a bit of his footing, slowing to a halt and turning around promptly when Beverly speaks again. Eyebrow raising a little, he glances briefly at Bones, then tips his head in a vague nod, waiting to hear her out. "Alright. What sort of parameters?" Because look, it's not like Jim was planning on roping her into a threeway or anything of the sort.

Both brows rose as she pulled them to a stop. His eyes first found Jim's looking vaguely confused before he finally turned to look at Beverly trying not to furrow his brow too much. He really hadn't thought he said anything offensive or even implied he wished to behave inappropriately toward her or even around her. Any intentions he might have were really reserved only for Jim, but he likely wouldn't behave wrongly even with him there with him. Fingers gripped a touch tighter about Jim's hand as he allowed a curious look to spread over his face. "Somethin' wrong?" Because the gentleman in him wanted to instantly apologize just in case he stepped out of line somehow. But he honestly couldn't figure it out.

Honestly, the thought that they might try anything with her never crossed her mind. She trusts them and besides - it's patently clear to anyone looking at them how in love they are. Her expression softens as she looks at their confused faces. "No, no, it's nothing you did." She gives them a small smile. "Really, I'm glad you're willing to have me along but... we don't exactly know what we'll find in there, so I just want... a safeword, if you will, if one of us gets too uncomfortable."

"I've been in there," Jim states promptly, glancing at the entrance doors for a moment before looking back to her. "It's fine, really. Nothing too wild. I mean, there are some more... actively kinkier parts, for those looking to get a little more involved, but you're not likely to stumble into those areas by accident."

Everything's identified properly, particularly those areas, so no one unwitting won't find themselves in an awkward and uncomfortable situation. However, if Beverly wants to make sure and set up some kind of safety mechanism, then he's all too willing to go along. "But we can do that too, just in case."

A flicker of discomfort ran over his face as he cleared his throat. "You think it'll get that bad?" Maybe he's a little gun shy, sure, but he was kind of hoping nothing would make him too upset inside. And honestly, he didn't want to let his mind run away with that.

Though, he stopped to look at Jim, pressing his lips together in a thin line. Honestly, he didn't know if Jim's knowledge made him feel better or not. In fact, he found himself looking away from Jim at nothing in particular and furrowing his brow. "Sure.. if you want." He'd be lying if he suddenly didn't want to just turn around and go back home.

She shakes her head. "It's just...this isn't exactly in my comfort zone." And not within Leonard's either, judging from his reaction, though she is hardly going to point that out. "What may not cross a line for you might cross a line for me and vice versa, so I only want us to... be aware of that."

"Alright, fair enough," Jim nods. He can agree to that much, and all too easily. He knows it's difficult to make him uncomfortable, particularly, but still, it doesn't mean he's unaware of how certain things might affect others. They're all adults here, though, so he figures they'll both say if they're not alright with being in there anymore, and Jim will be all too willing to leave along with them. "I mean, you don't have to go if you don't want to. But you seemed curious, hence my asking you to join us."

"What word are ya thinkin'?" He gave Beverly a questioning look before looking back up at the building. The doctor knew she was right. Also knew that Jim likely wouldn't realize if either of them weren't exactly comfortable. And where he planned to just grin and bear it, he didn't want Beverly to go through that unnecessarily. Though, he did squeeze Jim's hand lightly to show appreciation for him being understanding. He knew the man was... he just didn't show it as obviously sometimes.

"I am curious!" she hastens to reassure Jim. It isn't a lack of curiosity, merely an abundance of caution. Especially since their friendship is so new. She trusts them both implicitly as she would any Starfleet officers, but they're not... Deanna. Or Will or Jean-Luc (though good lord what would he think of all of this? Will and Deanna would both happily be encouraging her at least).

"But I was thinking... I don't know, something that'd only mean something to us." She's not out to inadvertently insult anyone or make a moral judgement on them.

Jim nods, thinking a little on it. Honestly, he's starting to worry he pushed at the limits of both hers and Bones's comfort at this point, but it also seems like a silly reaction to withdraw from it completely now. So he figures he'll just roll with what she's suggesting, and if the event ends up being too much for them, then they can just leave, no fuss or harm done.

"How about something Starfleet related? A reference only we would understand."

"I guess 'abort' is too obvious." The remark is punctuated with the faintest of smirks to give away that he's just teasing before he lifted a shoulder. "I don't know? Starfleet oriented is likely a good idea. But I'm not sure how any of the ones I'm thinking of will flow into normal conversation."

He's more blunt in personality and subterfuge has never been a strong point. His mom once told him his mouth would be trouble some day. "So I take it you don't have one in mind, doctor?"

"I suppose 'yellow alert' is too on the nose as well," she grins, just a little, becoming more settled into the idea of exploring the event. "But I don't think it needs to be anything too complicated. Maybe just say you dropped your tricorder or something."

Jim's thoughtful for a moment, simply hearing them speak. "What about warp speeds?" He suggests finally, raising his eyebrows as he looks between the two of them. "Warp 1 for slow and steady, warp 7 and above if we're just going too fast. I'm pretty sure no one would really get it if we just asked each other what's our current warp factor." Maybe they'd get a funny look or two, but nothing Jim couldn't live with, honestly.

"Huh... I like that idea." It would sound strange, sure. But not offensive and the three of them would get it. Glancing between them, he sent Jim a small smile before turning his gaze on his fellow doctor, he smiled. "Sound alright to you?"

Her own smile grows and she nods. "That sounds perfect! And thank you both for being understanding." She didn't mean to ruin any fun and hopes they can still enjoy themselves.

"We're very understanding, that's our thing," he smiles playfully, tilting his head towards the door. "Lead the day, doctors."

"Well then, guess we're goin' in." He huffed a soft chuckle and pulled Beverly toward the door along with the pull of Jim on his own arm. Maybe he was a little nervous. Hell, he never went to anything like this before. And even if he might've read about some of it in college, he'd never really got involved with it?

Still, he wasn't going to back out now. "I suppose we should defer to the good captain for his direction since he's been here before, only fair, don't ya think?" He sent Beverly a smile with that question before glancing at Jim. "What should we look at first, Jim?"

Now that the negotiations are over, it's occurring to Beverly how odd this would sound to anyone back home, that she went to a kink exhibition with Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy. Who are dating. She smiles to herself, imagining Jean-Luc's reaction to that report. She quickly turns that smile on Jim however and nods in agreement with Leonard. "Yea, where should we should start?"

Yes, Jim imagines that one would be something of a surprise to a lot of people if it were to make it onto the books. Not that Jim cares one way or the other, honestly— people do seem to take a certain amount of interest in his personal life, which he can't say he doesn't understand where it comes from. It's still a little strange, but something he's gotten used to.

"Hmm, there's plenty to pick from, it really depends on what people are into. Personally I've found the rope exhibit very interesting, and pretty to look at too. If we're lucky we might even catch one of the demonstrations. Sound good?"

Leonard didn't want to think about what other people thought about him being there. It was better to pretend no one was looking nor cared. It made it easier to function like nothin' was the matter. That private side of him just had to be locked up sometimes, he s'posed.

"Ropes... Like that Japanese art?" He figured it wasn't exactly the same, but at least possibly similar. He had to admit, that was sometimes lovely to look at even if he rarely did. "I think that'll be just fine." Probably something much easier to start with than some. Maybe. He wouldn't hold his breath. "Lead on, darlin'."
