carnivale

In the days leading up to July 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Carnivale. This holiday is in celebration of music, and the onset of summer and warmer weather. The celebrations are marked by street parties, an extensive program of live musical performances, with a large parade (and paid holiday!) capping it off on July 8th.

After a couple of months of low-key or even solemn celebrations, it's time for Riverview Quarantine to throw a good, old-fashioned party. Carnivale is a city-wide festival that pretty much everyone gets into, and many residents take the entire week off so they can enjoy all the festivities. With events ranging from impromptu street parties, free live musical performances, food stands, themed club nights, adult lounges with kink shows, and topped off with a massive party parade, the holiday has a lot to offer for anyone who likes to sing, dance, and show some skin!

i. street parties and food

One of the staples of the Carnivale festival is the spontaneous street parties and food trucks and carts. It's not unusual during the holiday to turn a corner and run into a group of people dressed in bright colors and sequins having an impromptu party with a few drinks, and then be invited to join right in! Carnivale is a celebration of music as well as summer, so most shops and stalls will be blasting danceable music into the streets to facilitate these little street parties - it's considered a sign of good luck for the owner of a business if an impromptu Carnivale celebration starts up in front of their door.

Considering the proliferation of street parties and people out and about to celebrate the warmer weather, local business owners also take to the streets. Food carts, stands, and trucks pop up on almost every street corner offering a wide variety of food from savory treats to sweet desserts. Many of the carts are offering one free item to anyone dressed up for Carnivale - anything shimmery, shiny, or brightly colored will do!

ii. live musical performances

One of the major roads in the city center has been completely roped off for the entire week, and all along this street, various temporary stages have been set up, each with a nice hefty sound system. Volunteers hand out printed flyers, and digital boards are set up here and there with schedules of various performances that are all free to attend, ranging from well-known popular music artists to new up-and-comers or independent artists who are looking to make a name for themselves. This event is very widely advertised around the city, and is accepting entries until the very last minute.

At couple of the acts might be familiar faces to some of the residents.

Eichi Tenshouin has signed up himself and his friend Tsumugi Aoba into the music festival as a first-time appearing idol unit called "Higanbana." Dressed in all white with splashes of color (blue, largely, with only their headsets being a red spider lily), they carry a very commanding and angelic image together. They'll have a routine that emphasizes their great harmony with each other, taking turns doing solo lines and joining together to show off each of their talents. Singing and dancing, they interact heavily with the audience and will encourage a lot of involvement with speaking between songs and gestures, winks, and so on. Basically, they intend to make this Riverview's very first prominent "idol performance".

For his performance, Otabek Altin will start with rock remixes of a few popular pop songs. He wants to make sure that it starts off with recognizable pieces for some people, and he certainly thinks it is something that could get people excited even if they don't know it. Then, it shifts into a few original songs. They are upbeat, rock songs that he put together with the intention to make people dance and move, since he is a DJ. He'll end his set with a slower piece he put together that is also an original. Through the entire performance, he's focused and quiet, though he may occasionally try and excite the crowd with a few words.

Any other player-characters who are musically inclined are more than welcome to assume their character was fit in for a performance, and can post up a top-level with a rundown of their performance to get bonus Activity Points for posting a mingle!

iii. carnivale parade

The other main attraction of Carnivale week comes on July 8th, which is a paid holiday for everyone in the city. The Carnivale Parade will be starting out by City Hall and winding through downtown in a lazy pattern so everyone in the city has a chance to see it. There will be all sorts of floats, dancers, marching bands, with all sorts of clubs, businesses, and other organizations represented. The theme is theatrical, big and showy, bright and colorful, sparkly and shiny, with loud music and lots of glitz and glamour. Observers can expect great music, excellent dancing and marching shows, neat vehicles provided by classic car clubs, the fire, police, and Perimeter Guard. They can also expect a lot of party favors, whether it's a sparkly plastic beaded necklace, a fan to take the edge off the heat, candy, popsicles, a temporary tattoo, or any number of other little treats or toys to be tossed into the crowd - some of them fit for kids and teens, others of a more 'adult' nature handed out a bit more discreetly to anyone who looks the part.

And make sure you wear your waterproof mascara - Carnivale floats have a tendency of spraying or spritzing water, both in an unspoken competition to see who can make the biggest water-refraction rainbow in the air, and to keep observers cool in the new summer heat.

iv. adult: lounges and kink exhibition

Thanks to the Carnivale tradition of showing as much skin as possible, some event organizers' minds have turned to topics of a more adult nature. In the evenings, residents may see clubs doing "lounge nights"; these adults-only events have bouncers IDing everyone at the door to ensure they're 18+. The themes may vary, from very specific niche themes like 'golden age superheroes' to broad themes like 'rainbows,' and each event is clearly marked as what it is - all-nude or clothing-optional, and can host events ranging from amateur to professional exotic dancing, food served off of nude bodies, anonymous masked hookups, or just provide a comfortable space where casual sex is encouraged with whoever happens to be around. Various legal substances can be found at these lounges, but nothing that would cause violation of consent, and every substance would be clearly labeled and have warnings to ensure that no one partakes unless they choose to. Please be sure to warn in the subject line for sexual content or drug use (since some mild party drugs are legal in Riverview).

For the weekend from July 7th-9th, there will be a kink exhibition in one of the large exhibition centers downtown, limited to characters 18+. The exhibition is a sexy adult informational convention featuring various kinks and fetishes. Whether you're into leather, latex, lace, or anything else, you'll be able to find the clothes, toys, guides, books, erotica, fiction, and a wide variety of other interesting stuff to explore. While the atmosphere is sex-positive and there are private and public (for the voyeurs and exhibitionists in the room) venues for having sex, it's definitely focused on exploration and information about different stuff to try.

Also, I don't think you're going to find a lot of fancy clothes like yours unless you find a tailor. Maybe you could ask Taako.

[He lets out a soft noise, caught somewhere between amused and disbelieving.]

You seem to be handling it just fine.

[You know what he's just gonna correct Bellamy that Lucretia is human right now, maybe this problem will never come up in the future.]

There's Rin, he's a drow, but we didn't exchange ages so I dunno exactly how old he is, safe to bet he's over a century though, since he's an adult.

[And that's when adulthood officially starts, for elves.]

But uh, even the humans here sometimes have weird shit going on. There's at least a coupe immortals, the Asgardians are old as shit. I think some aliens don't age the same rate? You're better off asking each person if you're worried about it.

I tend to keep a vial of each type on hand, yeah.

[He pulls his hoodie open, and shows off the makeshift pockets sewn in to hold seven vials - six, currently, since he's just given one away. Two are red, one orange, one yellow, one green, and one blue. And all giving off an ethereal glow.]

The point of the project was always to let me manipulate people... and certain flavors just aren't useful to good people. Sort of makes it interesting to see what people make of them.

[Maybe not fancy, he supposes he could live without anything so fine as what Nina would make him but...]

[His face drops slightly.]

Taako's pretty upfront about the stuff he has done. But it's your call.

[Reaper expressed enough distaste with watching these parties when they first met, that Dodger doesn't believe he'd hang around them for fun for a second. He must have some reason for it, but honestly, who he's looking for isn't really his problem. He has more important things to concentrate on.]

[As Jamison Kingsley, his desperation had shown up in his voice... as Dodger, it shows itself as a spark in his eyes, a twitch in his expression that betrays there hasn't been a second since he met this man that he hasn't been itching to bend his knee to him. It keeps him up at night, sometimes; the fear of permanent independence, of being left to his own devices with no direction for his entire stay here... and he continues to see Reaper as the solution to that.]

Three months.

[A ridiculously long time... long enough to start going stir-crazy beyond his usual means, just from having absolutely nothing to do except for the mindless habits his upbringing had ingrained in him. Getting information at any cost, jumping on any idea that might be to his advantage, holding out for someone to give him direction while he makes himself useful the only way he knows how to.]

Don't touch those fireflies - they bite. [With a lazy motion, he gestures toward the bed.] Just get your shoes off and lay down - or strip, if you care about keeping that dress in one piece.

[While Sif has been known to enjoy food and ale, it could be said that she isn't exactly in the mindset to do so. One moment she had been returning Lorelei to Asgard, and the next she had been stepping out of a portal, minus one prisoner. While she had not been hostile, she had been brisk, demanding information. It seems though that for the time being, she is stuck within this strange realm.

She has not changed, still wearing the red and silver armour attire that she had been dressed in, sword over her back, although her shield is lacking at the moment. That, at least, is a small blessing, as she works through the crowds. Her expression does remain far too serious for such a party, and the look of determination is evident as she seeks to learn more about this place.

It is sheer coincidence that her attire is shiny, and the perplexed look remains on her face at the free offerings. Free is free, and while there is a dubious cast to her face, none others seem to be taking ill from it, and she does sample what is given. Like now, when she is holding a corn dog in one hand, still looking completely over dressed and out of place, yet not seeming to care for one moment that she is. Rather, she seems slightly perturbed by the name of the item.]

I do not understand. It is the meat of a canine? With corn? And one is to eat it, on purpose?

iii.
[Her explorations to date have yielded little, and it does still unsettle her. This place is still fresh and new, and she is not the sort to like surprising sprung on her. Something moves back home, something stirs. She likes it not, being gone, although she is not arrogant enough to believe that things shall fall apart without her their.

It is curiosity though that drives her out, dressed down slightly this time. Gone is her blade and her armour, although there is still something about the way that she walks and the way that she observes that sets her apart. Even in the midst of it all, she has not let her guard down.

Rather, she leans against a pillar, mindful of the gaiety around, but her focus is not completely on the parade itself, but also on those that have attended. Given this realm, Sif realizes that any may appear, and the thought is enough to make her alert. Still, she does let a snort out at certain floats, finding them amusing, and her eyes do roll when something a bit more boisterous appears.

Yet her attention does turn, eyes settling on the person closest to her.]

Uh. Alright.

[ Yep! Independent streak. Kids. Well, John can't really blame him-- it's a phase a lot of them go through, right? ]

Well, my name's John, if I can help you out, just. Let me know, okay?

[ Three months is quite a while, by her personal calendar... but even she can recognize this is a serious collection in here. Her hoard had barely grown at all in three months, his room is way more cluttered than she'd managed to get her cave. She finally pulls her attention to his bed, regards it for a moment, and decides it will do. And she does care about keeping the dress in one piece, thanks, she's already learned how annoying they are to replace.

Without an ounce of self consciousness she reaches back to undo the latches, slides it down her chest, and wiggles out of the thing entirely. It's not a very sexy move, it looks more like she's undressing for an audience of just herself at the end of the day. She steps out of her shoes with just as much presentation, then takes a seat at the edge of the bed, fully naked.

And because she can't just stop asking questions: ] If you can teleport, why didn't you bring us here directly and save us the walk?

[ Well now. This was the last person Loki expected to see arrive in Riverview. He is . . . actually not sure what to make of it. On one hand, Sif has not suspected that her king has been replaced and that subterfuge still delights the heart of him.

On the other hand . . . Thor and Sif around makes life uncomfortable. ]

Why not try it and see, Lady Sif?

Maybe you just tuned in at a bad time? The other performances were much lovelier than this, if I do say so myself... not that I'm saying that this one is bad, of course! Though I can admit that it's not my type of music to listen to either.

[ he does notice how agitated ciel looks and so: ]

Do you want to go somewhere else, then? You don't have to endure this any longer if you're not up to it.

[ Oh boy. He's up here, and people sure are watching. What they are watching is what amounts to some weird amalgamation of dad dancing and white boy dancing, all at the same time. How he managed to come up with that one is anyone's guess, but... he's trying. ]

Oh you mean these? [ He points at the beads. ] I don't know if I'd call it letting loose? Actually most people just came up from behind and put them over my head. One guy asked me to flex, but that's not that crazy, just weird!

I don't know, probably someone. But I don't think there's any weird conspiracy going on behind our backs...

[ Not that he's been given any particular reason to think that. Just that it seems too implausible. With all the effort taken to bring them here, it seems like they wouldn't need to go to extra lengths, just to trick them. Their hosts, so to speak, we holding all the cards. ]

It just doesn't seem like it would be worth it to trick us? What would they even get out of it?

"That's not my problem. I'm looking for something, and I don't need someone I have to watch out for tagging along. So watch your gate, and find someone else you can play cop for."

She shrugs her shoulders, shifting her duffel bag. She's pretty sure she could just slip away, but she's giving him the chance to walk away -- the less people know about her, the better.

I don't think so.

[ All of their Lands were kind of weird like that, anyway. It always rained on Rose's... ]

Oh. Wow, three months? Well, I guess they did say we'd be here a while... how do you like it so far? Is it always like this?

[Ciel is a cynic.]

I'll have to speak with him, then.

Sure. Like I said, it's your call.

Yes. I'll let you know when it's been too much. Let's do it a little bit more each time, but while avoiding anything vital.

[It doesn't help that Eichi is so used to lying, and that he can lie so well when his body isn't betraying him. Each time, he heals the wound, focuses, and keeps going. He might seem a little tired in the face or shoulders, but overall he doesn't seem all that bad.

At least not until he's completely healed one larger cut on Cain and then looks green in the face. He still lifts his hands and stares like he's ready, but he's swaying a bit...]
