prijata

In the days leading up to June 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Prijata. Riverview Quarantine has a strong culture of love, and they celebrate all types - Prijata is a special celebration of platonic love and building community through friendship. Prijata traditions include gift exchanges between friends, sharing meals cooked together by friend groups, and a variety of events and services aimed at making friends.

a celebration of platonic love

Prijata is a relatively relaxed holiday, focused mainly on friendship and platonic love - dedicated to appreciating the friends already in one's life, and opening oneself up to making new friends. Besides the private giving of gifts between friends, there is also a city-wide government-sponsored gift fountain that is open throughout the entire week. Included in the wide variety of events catered to finding new friends, are 'speed friending' and a large open exhibition where all the specialized clubs in Riverview can recruit for new members - and residents new or old can create a club and recruit.

i. gift fountain

While Prijata gift exchanges between friends are generally a quiet affair, done at friend-group dinners or parties, the element of gift giving does extend outward - community-wide, in fact. Throughout the course of the week, anyone living in Riverview Quarantine can drop by the huge fountain in the City Center, in front of the City Hall. They will find that the fountain is chock full of floating gift boxes in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and different shapes - though none larger than a shoe box. There are signs put up around the fountain stating that the boxes are magic and will only seek and open for their rightful owners. Characters will find that, upon touching the water, a box will float over to them, and when they pick it up, the top will unfurl like flower petals, displaying the gift inside. Sometimes, the box won't appear on the first try, since there's only so much space in the fountain at any given time, but if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Every person in the city (including new arrivals) will receive one gift by the end of the week.

Gift fountain boxes will contain one small item from each character's home dimension (or, for CRAUs, from their previous game), similar to the "items from home" bonus reward, but without needing to spend points. The item should be small enough to fit in a shoebox, sentimental, and cannot be something intended for another person's character. ETA: If you can't think of an item like this that would work for your character, something of similar size and quality to what's described above that would make the character very happy can be substituted.

This prompt can also be used for gift exchanges and for characters to receive the Government-given gifts that were suggested in the Prijata Pregaming posts on the OOC community and the TDM.

ii. speed-friending

This is pretty much what it says on the tin! Much like speed-dating setups, many bars, coffee shops, and other places that people might gather are holding speed-friending! It's your standard setup - characters enter and fill out a quick questionnaire about themselves, and flit from table to table looking for someone with great friend chemistry. Not all of them are general and open to anyone who walks in, though, with many being specialized to people who are invested in certain hobbies, occupations, or with specific sets of interests. With specialized speed-friending setups ranging from horror movie buffs to members of the Perimeter Guard to fashionistas to sports or martial arts to video games, no matter what your character is into, they're likely to be able to sign up for a special event where they can go looking for a friend who's into the same things they are!

For this prompt, you can put up a list of hobbies or interests your character has, and compatible characters can hit them up for a speed-friending thread, like the IC equivalent of the CR meme!

iii. club exhibition

Speed-friending is all well and good, but not everyone is outgoing or open enough to know if they have friend chemistry in only a few minutes. For anyone looking to find groups of like-minded individuals they can spend more than a few minutes with before committing to something as daunting as a friendship, there is a week-long club exhibition happening in the Town Square in the City Center. Table after table and booth after booth are occupied by existing clubs in the city, with an incredibly broad scope of focus interests and hobbies - enough that any character should be able to find a club with their niche interest represented.

And if it isn't? Characters are welcome to start their own clubs - much like a business, a character-run club can have space set aside in the city for meetings and event mingles that are eligible for Activity Point Bonuses for the organizer.

iv. unveiling the new friendr

Prijata this year is marked by something special - the unveiling of a code rebuild of the ubiquitous Friendr app! Anyone with the app installed already will receive a prompt to update the app, and if anyone hasn't yet downloaded it, they'll receive a quick, easily-dismissed pop-up ad on their device when they next access the network, asking if they want to. No one is obligated, and the ad is a one-time instance, intended to make sure any character who hasn't heard of the app gets a chance.

The Friendr app is a swipe-left-or-right style friend matching and/or dating app that is very common in Riverview, both for PCs and NPCs, and it has received an upgrade with a new appearance, a new interests line for more accurate matching, and a wide variety of themes so that the colors can be customized!

Please see the updated appearance below, with the 'default' color scheme. Players are free to change the colors or appearance of the code but please do not remove the credit line showing where the base code came from, out of respect for the code creator.

[Chainsaw lets out the throaty caw of a raven in response to her name. Ronan narrows his eyes. He stretches out his hand and places it in front of his bird before she can move closer to Cain.]

How do you know Chainsaw?

[Not that she's constantly attached to his shoulder, but when she isn't, she's usually somewhere Ronan knows people won't mess with her.]

[ English again, because Cain's polite like that. Speaking what people are comfortable in and not being a total showoff. ]

She was with Adam when I met him. Knowing tricks in Latin obviously caught my ear.

[Ronan slides his hand back, allowing Chainsaw to inspect Cain. That's all the explanation he needs. If he needed to be wary of this guy, Adam would have told him. He thinks.]

Oh, you know Adam.

[Ronan's voice is significantly warmer when he says that.]

He's a good kid. Curious.

[ Says the guy who barely looks out of college age.

When he's given space to see Chainsaw, he holds his hand out for her to do as she'd like. Not blocking her access to get closer and inspect anything else, though, just a starting point. ]

[Chainsaw makes no response. She's more focused on looking for anything shiny on his person. While she does that, Ronan snorts.]

You've got a weird definition of "kid." You weren't lying about the teacher thing, right? Or a wanna-be poor as shit teacher?

[ He's got buttons and a watch. The band is just plastic but the face still reflects light and is probably sending a reflection all over the place. ]

No, I wasn't lying. I'm a programmer. Or... a historian? Putting that in other peoples' heads is just an exercise in frustration, though.

[ Cain really only teaches on an individual basis. Nothing so grandiose as an underfunded classroom for him. ]

Isn't that the nerd combo. If you didn't teach, what did you do with that? Code and obsess over history on the side?

[Ronan makes no comment when it comes to his bird. Chainsaw has set to work examining the clock. She jabs her beak at the watch, tries to take hold of it, and then caws indignantly when she realies she can't fly off with it.]

[ He's distracted by Chainsaw momentarily, murmurs something along the lines of do you run off with everything that catches your eye? in amused Latin before he turns back to Ronan. ]

"Nerd" is a pretty good word for it. There's always academia and that doesn't necessarily mean teaching... but actually you're about right. Obsess over history and watching it happen in the now. As for coding, I make phone apps in the Quarantine, so close enough.

[Ronan's nose briefly wrinkles in disgust at the mention of a phone, let alone an app. It passes. What does not pass is Chainsaw's obsession with the watch though she's given up on running off with it and is instead admiring the reflection.]

Boring. Better stick with history.

[ That Cain allows and he turns his wrist in small, vague motions for her to follow or enjoy. ]

Technology is history. Just more modern than the rest.

[Chainsaw's found a new friend.]

Don't get me wrong.

[Ronan produces an iPod from his pocket, earphones still connected.]

I like these just fine. Technology is mostly great. But phones are a waste nine times out of time. Everyone tries to get all up your ass with texts and shit.

[ Oh, he'll keep doing that for her for a bit. It's not like it's tiring or anything. ]

Like how people used to get on you about calling home every day or week or making sure to write letters or... [ There's a rueful grin. ] Just a new form for an old hassle.

[somnioergosum]

[Ronan's lips twisted into a bitter smile. No one's going to pester him about calling or writing home. If-- when-- he gets back, he'll probably be the one doing the pestering.]

Whatever you say. Until you make some kick ass phone game, I'm calling it boring. But that's all your call.

[aeturnus]

Oh no, the stuff I do? Really boring. Just restaurant rating things right now.

[somnioergosum]

[Ronan groans and throws up his hands. Chainsaw is too used her creator's dramatic gestures to be distracted by any of it.]

I can't believe you made a fucking yelp for Riverview. You're killing me.

[aeturnus]

[ He laughs and spreads his hands. ]

Hey, it wasn't my idea. I just took the payment to do it.

[somnioergosum]

You poor bastard. You should shovel shit with me for a living instead.

[Ronan actually doesn't sound unhappy about this, granted he does more than shovel shit on a farm but it gets the meaning across. He'd rather do that than mess with a phone.]

That sounds like effort.

[ His grin says he's only joking, that he's not unused to work of whatever sort. ]

Really, though? I find it easy, means I get time to do something other than a nine-to-five every week.

There are worse ways to make a living.

[Ronan can't help but think of his father and the thought alone unsettles him.]

I never worked a nine to five before. It's not so bad. Never got that "love what you do and you'll never work a day of your life."

[Ronan reaches over and taps his bird's feathers before she gets lost in a watchpiece. She stares at him as indignantly as a raven can.]

It's a bullshit saying nine times out of ten but if you're happy with your shitty phone apps, good for you.

[Sadly, that's Ronan's way of trying to be nice.]

They're whatever.

[ It's a very young person thing to say, but Cain really likes the phrase. It doesn't mean anything but it gets something across, and calling a 9-5 a "whatever" is about as accurate as he can make it. ]

Only worked a few myself. Don't have much need for jobs, got a lot squirreled away back home, but there's worse things I could be doing. Like accounting.

I never planned on working. I had an inheritance back home. I was going to fix our farm, get it running again.

[Magically breathe life back into the livestock. The usual.]

The portal had other plans.

Fixing a farm is pretty hard work.

[ His brows go up. Or maybe it's not hard work to someone who wants to do it, or finds it more of a duty... hard to say. ]

Yeah, I know how that feels.

The Barns? You have no idea.

[Ronan is virtually certain of that, given his own farm's unique nature, built from literal dreams.]

I'll get back one day. What about you? Do you want to stay here with their weird phones?

Just not work you'd mind doing?

[ Well that's definitely a different kind of farm than Cain is imagining. ]

No, definitely not. I've got things to take care of back home, family to reunite with, all that.

[Ronan shrugs.]

It's home.

[Ronan says the word "home" as if that's all the explanation that's needed. For anyone whose ever loved a place with all their being, it probably would be. But he's yet to find someone who can relate to the belonging he feels there. Still, a growing part of him doesn't want to return there just yet.]

But Riverview's not a terrible place to take a break from it. As long as everything is on pause. I don't want to come back and Opal's burned down the place.
