prijata

In the days leading up to June 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Prijata. Riverview Quarantine has a strong culture of love, and they celebrate all types - Prijata is a special celebration of platonic love and building community through friendship. Prijata traditions include gift exchanges between friends, sharing meals cooked together by friend groups, and a variety of events and services aimed at making friends.

a celebration of platonic love

Prijata is a relatively relaxed holiday, focused mainly on friendship and platonic love - dedicated to appreciating the friends already in one's life, and opening oneself up to making new friends. Besides the private giving of gifts between friends, there is also a city-wide government-sponsored gift fountain that is open throughout the entire week. Included in the wide variety of events catered to finding new friends, are 'speed friending' and a large open exhibition where all the specialized clubs in Riverview can recruit for new members - and residents new or old can create a club and recruit.

i. gift fountain

While Prijata gift exchanges between friends are generally a quiet affair, done at friend-group dinners or parties, the element of gift giving does extend outward - community-wide, in fact. Throughout the course of the week, anyone living in Riverview Quarantine can drop by the huge fountain in the City Center, in front of the City Hall. They will find that the fountain is chock full of floating gift boxes in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and different shapes - though none larger than a shoe box. There are signs put up around the fountain stating that the boxes are magic and will only seek and open for their rightful owners. Characters will find that, upon touching the water, a box will float over to them, and when they pick it up, the top will unfurl like flower petals, displaying the gift inside. Sometimes, the box won't appear on the first try, since there's only so much space in the fountain at any given time, but if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Every person in the city (including new arrivals) will receive one gift by the end of the week.

Gift fountain boxes will contain one small item from each character's home dimension (or, for CRAUs, from their previous game), similar to the "items from home" bonus reward, but without needing to spend points. The item should be small enough to fit in a shoebox, sentimental, and cannot be something intended for another person's character. ETA: If you can't think of an item like this that would work for your character, something of similar size and quality to what's described above that would make the character very happy can be substituted.

This prompt can also be used for gift exchanges and for characters to receive the Government-given gifts that were suggested in the Prijata Pregaming posts on the OOC community and the TDM.

ii. speed-friending

This is pretty much what it says on the tin! Much like speed-dating setups, many bars, coffee shops, and other places that people might gather are holding speed-friending! It's your standard setup - characters enter and fill out a quick questionnaire about themselves, and flit from table to table looking for someone with great friend chemistry. Not all of them are general and open to anyone who walks in, though, with many being specialized to people who are invested in certain hobbies, occupations, or with specific sets of interests. With specialized speed-friending setups ranging from horror movie buffs to members of the Perimeter Guard to fashionistas to sports or martial arts to video games, no matter what your character is into, they're likely to be able to sign up for a special event where they can go looking for a friend who's into the same things they are!

For this prompt, you can put up a list of hobbies or interests your character has, and compatible characters can hit them up for a speed-friending thread, like the IC equivalent of the CR meme!

iii. club exhibition

Speed-friending is all well and good, but not everyone is outgoing or open enough to know if they have friend chemistry in only a few minutes. For anyone looking to find groups of like-minded individuals they can spend more than a few minutes with before committing to something as daunting as a friendship, there is a week-long club exhibition happening in the Town Square in the City Center. Table after table and booth after booth are occupied by existing clubs in the city, with an incredibly broad scope of focus interests and hobbies - enough that any character should be able to find a club with their niche interest represented.

And if it isn't? Characters are welcome to start their own clubs - much like a business, a character-run club can have space set aside in the city for meetings and event mingles that are eligible for Activity Point Bonuses for the organizer.

iv. unveiling the new friendr

Prijata this year is marked by something special - the unveiling of a code rebuild of the ubiquitous Friendr app! Anyone with the app installed already will receive a prompt to update the app, and if anyone hasn't yet downloaded it, they'll receive a quick, easily-dismissed pop-up ad on their device when they next access the network, asking if they want to. No one is obligated, and the ad is a one-time instance, intended to make sure any character who hasn't heard of the app gets a chance.

The Friendr app is a swipe-left-or-right style friend matching and/or dating app that is very common in Riverview, both for PCs and NPCs, and it has received an upgrade with a new appearance, a new interests line for more accurate matching, and a wide variety of themes so that the colors can be customized!

Please see the updated appearance below, with the 'default' color scheme. Players are free to change the colors or appearance of the code but please do not remove the credit line showing where the base code came from, out of respect for the code creator.

For this prompt, you can either post your character's new, fancy Friendr app profile in the comments, or provide a link to their updated code in an entry on their journal. Whatever floats your boat!

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during Prijata, feel free to write it up!

She easily leans against him, letting him lead her away from the fountain as she continues to dry her eyes.

Letha isn't much for keeping her thoughts to herself - it always feels better to open up, and this feels like too much worry to keep bottled up. They're entering the apartment when she pipes up, nervous and quiet.

"The fountain gave me... something that belonged to my husband. I hadn't realized quite how much I missed him until... well."

He could teleport them, or summon Garyl to make the trip even quicker, but he thinks the walk might do Letha some good, giving her some time to clear her head before she's expected to say much.

As they make it inside, he leads her to one of the stools in the kitchen, then gets to work on the tea while Letha explains what she received.

"Some of this stuff seems kinda designed to make people feel shitty," It's part of why he hasn't claimed a gift yet, worried that it would be something painful.

"I don't think that's the fountain's intention." She hesitates, "Perhaps it simply... gives things we wish we had, and sometimes those are things we're not ready for."

She can't help it, she opens her bag again to pull out the belt and run her fingers over the bones. It's a morbid accessory, and much less high-class than, for example, her hairpin... but it's Aristeo's, and it means the world to her.

"Look at that... that's my pin." She holds it up so Taako can see the charred crow skull threaded into the belt. "Who knows how old this is, but he kept it... and I nearly put him out of my mind."

It isn't until she asks him to look that he does, and then he moves to stand in front of Letha, resting a hand on her arm.

"Hey, listen, don't let anyone make you feel like shit for doing what you gotta do to survive, even if that means moving on," Grief is a funny thing, but until Lup, he's never dwelt in it, always moved on as quickly as possible, putting things out of his mind so it didn't hurt anymore. It's callous, maybe, but it works, "Holding onto something you can't get back doesn't help anyone, especially not yourself."

And maybe that's callous, too, reminding Letha of her death, but... he doesn't see the point in sugar coating it.

Her head hangs a bit as he speaks; what he's saying is smart, but it doesn't help her aching heart. It's been so long since she's seen her husband, and without some miracle he might never even come visit Riverview... so despite his intentions, Taako's talk of moving on is really just making her feel worse.

"I keep telling myself it doesn't help, I really do. It's just... I miss my world so much." She lets out a little sob again, trying to hold back so she can speak properly, "Everything is so... different, and it was exciting, but now... all I can think of is that no one here is even a little bit like me and I might never meet someone who really understands what Thornwell was like ever again... And some people here hate me, they really do, all because of what everyone praised me for back home, it hurts..."

She feels herself burning with shame as she spills this, none of which she feels is really Taako's problem, but it's finally boiling over after months of being bottled up with feigned nonchalance about being cut off from her world.

When he realizes that she has a lot to say, Taako crouches down, taking her hands in his as he waits for her to get through everything that she wants to say. He doesn't know if he's ever going to be good at this sort of thing, but at least he can listen.

"Hey, hey," His tone is gentle, and he rubs his thumb over the back of her knuckles, trying to be reassuring, "You never know who's gonna turn up here, someone from my world finally turned up."

He hadn't expected it, and until he saw Lucretia, his feelings had been similar to Letha's, although better buried than hers seem to be. He's had a lot longer to practice that, though.

She lets out a shaky sigh as Taako holds her hands, and yes, that really helps. Even if... oh, no matter who turned up, a Regis in Riverview just wouldn't understand the way she was living. Even Aristeo or Nathaniel might ask questions that she just doesn't have good answers for.

"Do you... have any brothers or sisters?" She hesitates, "It's been... almost seven months, I think, since my brother last spoke to me. We used to talk every day after he died, but then when I died, he just... stopped. I wonder if.. if he came here, if he'd start speaking to me again."

She's met several people from the same universe, seen people reunited with their loved ones and even some put in positions that were better than their lives back home. But... something tells her that, as understanding as Nathaniel is, he'd have trouble with her whole situation.

That's a hard question to answer, even if the response should come easily, he just-- Taako can talk about Lup without thinking too hard about what he found in Wave Echo Cave, but Letha is talking about her own death and her brother being dead and it's hard.

"I had a sister," Had is the worst word he's ever said, "And I don't, uh, I don't know what you and your brother were like, but nothing could change how much I love her."

Maybe it's the same for her brother. He can't imagine having a sibling that wasn't a part of his heart the way Lup is, even if he knows it happens.

[personal profile] burntbridges 2017-07-03 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Had. She notices that word, and it makes her shoulders slump. She really shouldn't have asked that, it's so terrible to think about what they left behind.

"I'm sure my brother feels the same." She's not sure... not after the months she spent dead, without a word from Nathaniel, but she can't bring herself to admit her worry. "I've been told by a few people my husband might come here... perhaps one day your sister will."

She almost feels more comfortable wishing for that instead of her own family. She wouldn't know how to talk to them, or how they'd handle being here. But she hopes Taako will be reunited with his sister. If she's anything like Taako, she's sure Lup would be happy here.

"Sometimes I think that'd be harder, you know?" It's a surprising amount of honesty, but Letha is a dead sister with a brother she misses, so maybe she can understand it more than anyone else in this place can.

He lost Lup, and while there's still hope that he'll be able to save her, back home, he's not sure he could handle the emotional upheaval of having her here without knowing he could save her.
