[ leonard skirts around the fountain throughout the week. he watches from afar as other people pluck their gifts from the waters, eyeing their reactions. clearly evaluating. it's not that he's skeptical of magic, per se. hard to be, when he's been travelling with a reincarnated hawk priestess from ancient egypt. but he is incredibly skeptical of things given without anything asked in return.

so he watches. he takes mental note. and finally, on the last day, he approaches the fountain himself, hands tucked in his pockets. it takes him a little bit to reach out and touch the water, barely skimming the surface with the tips of his fingers, but he does. and over floats a little present. very carefully, he lifts it out of the water. it's smaller than a lot he's seen come out of this fountain. no more than three by five by two. the reason for that becomes apparent when he opens it.

inside is nothing more than a simple wood photo frame. resting in the frame is a picture that must be more than a decade old at this point. his sister, freshly twenty-one and celebrating, is in the middle, one arm thrown over her brother's shoulders, the other over mick's. there's a wild, shit-eating grin on her face and leonard himself is obviously trying not to laugh too hard at his very tipsy baby sister. it's one of the few things he had decorating his actual apartment at home. one of the few belongings he has that has true sentimental value to it.

leonard's jaw clenches and he keeps his face very blank as he wraps the present back up and shoves it into the pocket of his jacket, turning to stalk away. ]
