They both knew that Jim would sooner or later do something stupid, regardless of Bones being there or not. Not that Jim even entertained the possibility of Bones not being there for whatever reason, and definitely not because he would be dead. Jim wouldn't let that happen, anyway. Bones would no doubt berate him for it but Jim wouldn't even think before laying down his life for the doctor, possibly before he even knew there was danger to begin with.
"Good. I mean, M'Benga is an extraordinary doctor too, but he's not you." Jim knew in some ways that was just his heart talking, not his head, but Bones had gone well above and beyond the call of duty to keep him alive and safe, and Jim could and would never trust anyone else with his life as much as he did Bones.
He did groan a little at the eventual moment of danger being brought up, though he was expecting it already. "I didn't just do that because I felt like it. I had to, or else everyone on that base would have died." What he meant was, in years past he would've been a whole lot more reckless when it wasn't strictly necessary, but now he only did put his life at risk like that when he had no other choice. And he couldn't just sit back and wait for someone else to save him and everyone else. It just wasn't in his blood.
That sounded like a good balance, though. Jim smiled, curling his fingers around Bones's hand. "Seems like a nice compromise. I can roll with that," he smiled, squeezing Bones's fingers one last time before letting go. "So how about we finish this dinner?"
