[Breq didn't intend to be in the Perimeter Guard barracks at this late-- early, by this point-- an hour. But her latest trip out into the forest, started this morning, became a bit more complicated than she'd expected, thanks to a string of unfortunate events involving her gear, sinkholes, and the usual pesky wildlife. She's unhurt, which is the only benefit to it in her mind, but she's dirty, and tired, and seriously considering finding a spare bed at the barracks, rather than making the trek across the city to her own bed in the communal housing.
As tired as she is, she might have been forgiven for not checking her surroundings quite so thoroughly, but even exhaustion doesn't keep her from having her advanced reflexes, and sharp vision. So, when her glance through the darkened doorway reveals the dim light of an emergency exit sign glancing off of the angle of a shoulder, the bulk of a body, it takes her 2.3 seconds to register it as a person, and one sneaking around, at that.]
