river festival

In the days leading up to August 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: The River Festival. This holiday is in celebration of the river and the life that it gives to the city, as well as the heat of summer and forming bonds with friends, family, and romantic partners. The celebrations are marked by a community-wide cleanup of the docks and beaches along the river - particularly important considering the recent flooding that's left the banks of the river littered with debris - as well as beachfront cookouts and parties (both private and city sponsored) and beach sports tournaments happening on either open stretches of beach or in special clothing-optional beaches, all capped off with fireworks displays each weekend in August.

a celebration of the river and togetherness

Following the hedonism of Carnivale, it's time for something a little more low-key and relaxing. The River Festival happens every year in August, and is geared toward community building through cleaning up the beaches and docks along the river and then using all that freshly cleaned beach to gather on. During the month of August, there are various lightly-themed government-sponsored beach cookouts and parties geared toward family, romantic dates, or casual all-ages get-togethers for meeting new friends; there are also a few more racy parties at clothing-optional beaches around the city. Many private residents also take this time to gather together friends and family, and have cookouts on the beach with all the typical trappings of the beach barbecue. There are also various casual sports tournaments sponsored by community centers, gyms, and sports teams in the city, featuring prizes ranging from notoriety to sports equipment to big bucks. Every weekend, there are beautiful fireworks displays and free concerts. This year, the River Festival has been chosen for the unveiling of a new water park in the City, with free or heavily discounted tickets during August!

i. cleaning up

The holiday starts off on a note that is just a bit more sombre than the rest of the season, with the cleanup efforts following the recent flooding blending into the usual tradition of cleaning up beaches and docks along the river. The cleanup is a group effort, with every citizen who is physically able pitching in to comb the beaches, where they pick up fallen tree limbs, garbage, and anything else that's accumulated during the winter and spring, and then raking the beaches to make them clean and ready to use. The cleanup of the docks is similar, with residents sweeping and hosing them down where necessary. This year, there are a lot of repairs to be made to beachfront structures that might've been damaged by flooding and the traffic along the riverbanks from the heroes that participated in the rescue of cult hostages, so if anyone has some carpentry or building skills, those would definitely come in handy.

This is meant to be a community building effort, so many businesses in the area, more well-to-do private citizens, and the government have pitched in funding to provide lunches, cold drinks, coffee or tea, and snacks to anyone who's helping out with the cleanup efforts. All in all, the cleanup has a very friendly, welcoming vibe.

ii. beach activities

The main traditions of the River Festival involve cookouts and beach parties. Each weekend in August, the government as well as various corporations and businesses in the city, will be providing funds for large beach gatherings. On these days, there will be booths set up offering wares and freebies from various businesses around the city that have helped fund the party, large swaths of cleared beach where residents can don a swimsuit and catch some rays or swim in the river, massive barbecue setups to provide partygoers with all the standard barbecue fare, beach sports tournaments, dancing and musical performances, and fireworks displays (see prompts below).

The holiday isn't just about these big parties, though - many residents arrange their own barbecues, cookouts, beach camping trips, beach bonfires, and other riverside gatherings and outings. Many riverfront businesses offer discounts on services such as canoe or kayak rentals to go out paddling on the river, jetski or motorboat rentals for tubing, wakeboarding, or waterskiing, or mounts to take romantic rides in the surf. Additionally, there is an adults-only section of the beach where any of these activities can be done in the nude in a clothing-optional setting, including the big city-sponsored parties.

If your character is good at playing a particular sport that could, conceivably, be played on a beach, chances are that during the month of August, a tournament will be set up for them to participate in. The tournaments are pretty standard, generally sponsored by community centers, sports clubs and teams, gyms, and other organizations and businesses in the city, with various levels of specialization, and levels of skill or competitiveness. The prizes also vary, with everything from plain old bragging rights to sports equipment or passes to gyms and community centers, to large lump sums of cash money. Definitely worth it, for characters with a love for sport. Oh, and a lot of these tournaments are happening on the adults-only clothing-optional beaches, for those grown-up sports fans who like a bit of an extra challenge.

iii. fireworks and music

Each weekend throughout the month of August, there will be evening performances all along the beach. Not as extensive as the musical performances during Carnivale, the performances are geared more toward dancing than true concerts, with areas roped off on both on the regular and adults-only clothing-optional beaches for dancing and mingling (acts will switch off between the two areas so both areas get both performances).

Player-characters who are musical artists, DJs, or otherwise perform are free to set up shop around this party and panhandle or put on free performances for publicity.

After the sun goes down, boats will head out into the water carrying a variety of fireworks, and there will be a beautiful display of exploding color in the sky for residents to watch and enjoy. The fireworks are highly advanced, incorporating old-fashioned gunpowder as well as modern technology that result in really beautiful displays that can take the breath away!

iv. waterpark

This year, there's an extra little bit of fun being thrown into the River Festival - the grand opening of a new waterpark! It's quite the park, set near the river with a scenic view, and featuring all sorts of amazing rides, from waterslides that are catered to all ages and levels of thrill seeking, tube rides that are almost like a rollercoaster on water, a pool where customers can faux-surf, funnel rides, side-by-side racing slides, a lazy river, and almost anything else you can imagine. Besides the rides, there are also a wide variety of swimming pools for kids and adults - wave pools, lap pools, splash pools - and an equally wide variety of hot tubs featuring various minerals (and some aromatherapy) for relaxing, invigoration, and other effects.

Some of the hot tubs are in a clothing-optional adult area, where there are some normal pools and some clearly-labelled pools contain elements that increase arousal or desire, or simply affection to encourage some closer bonding!

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to meet new roommates, for the purpose of getting to know each other, or hit up one of the mod-posted prompts for each Communal Floor. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during the River Festival, feel free to write it up!

( A. Cleaning Up )

Heahmund had been working on the clean up for a long time by the time noon had come around and hunger started to make itself be known. He finished the task that he'd been working on before making his way to one of the areas that had food. He made his way to get a simple meal and some water before finding a tree to sit under and eat while watching the activity that is still going around.

( B. Fireworks )

[ Fireworks is something that's a new experience for Heahmund. He'd settled a bit of a ways from where crowds had gathered with an alcoholic beverage that's not something he actually recognizes. It has the effect he intends as he watches the skies. He doesn't pay much attention to who might come close, not particularly the most social of creatures.

But, at least he isn't rambling about God at anyone just yet. ]

Ronan knew what Heahmund looked like by now. He had glanced at Heahmund's friendr, gathering more information, telling himself he'd contact him soon, but continuing to put it off. He wasn't a coward, he hadn't gone to confession since-- shit. A while. Long enough that it should no longer matter to him anymore and yet it still did.

He was out of excuses once he spotted Heahmund. From the look of it they both had finished cleaning up Riverview's trash for the day. Ronan might as well see if he could take care of some more personal garbage in his life.

He'd left Chainsaw at home for the day-- too many shiny things-- and so he was on his own. He took his hands out of his pockets as he walked over to Heahmund.

"You're that bishop."

Heahmund was surveying the area as if making sure there was no lingering trash to take care of when a young man walked up toward him. He didn't recognize him by face but the voice was familiar enough from their previous conversation that he was able to place him. His face is stoic and while there's a semblance of a smile it's not particularly warm or friendly as Heahmund is neither of those things. He's certainly nothing like a friendly parish Father.

"I am," he agreed, looking over the boy. He seemed less strange than many here but then again there's a lot that doesn't appear on the surface level at times.

Quite a lot for Ronan Lynch and he was just as aware that others had their secrets too. Just from their brief conversation, he knew Heahmund was not an easy man to get along with, which was fine with him. But in person he looked much more intense. It wasn't intimidating, just the opposite.

He stopped at a comfortable distance. Comfortable for Ronan, anyway, which was a bit farther than normal.

"Been a while," he said though not long enough for his voice to have faded from memory. Ronan caught the look of recognition. "How're you liking the heathens?"

[personal profile] heahmund 2018-08-10 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Their sense of personal bubbles is a similarity they can share. Heahmund more often than not is having an annoying Viking invading his personal space and is frequently tempted to stab the Viking with the sword that is sheathed across his back even though there is not particularly a need for such a weapon in city.

"It has not been long at all," Heahmund says, after all, communication is very different in the 8th century so sometimes months and years would not even be considered a great deal of time. "I had expected you to be a bit more prompt."

But that's all he says on that particular matter and he makes a derisive sound at the mention of the heathens. "Unpalatable."
somnioergosum: (I know you I walked with you once...)

[personal profile] somnioergosum 2018-08-11 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Had to get a few more sins out of the way," he said dryly, but he quickly switched subjects as well. "You'll get used to them. Either that or they'll drive you crazy and you'll go on a murder spree. That'll end well."

He looked at Heahmund more closely. "What year are you from?"

He probably should have asked this sooner. For all he knows, after this confession he'll be first on the list when it comes to that hypothetical murder spree.
heahmund: (heahmund)

[personal profile] heahmund 2018-08-18 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Heahmund's brow raised. To be honest, a murder spree is not so far from normal for him. "Killing heathens is hardly murder," oh Ronan, you really don't know what kind of Bishop you're dealing with most likely. He's certainly the prerequisite of the Knight's Templar.

"The 8th century," Heahmund answers but probably contrary to what Ronan might be thinking they were much less homophobic before King James. Heahmund especially does not see anything wrong with various sexuality and sex is one of his own sins that he struggles with -- given he has a habit of having sex with widows that he'd just performed the last rites on their husbands and all. And then there's his unspoken attraction to Ivar that he's certainly not acknowledging.

All in all, homosexuality is going to be the least of what gets Ronan on the shit list.

[personal profile] somnioergosum 2018-08-18 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The 8th century. That did explain a lot.

"The last Christian I met from your time thought you should all be friends." Ronan had thought him an anomaly. Good to know he wasn't wrong about everything. "He put his money where his mouth was too, chilling with pagans and all. And now you're surrounded by them. Can't kill 'em or you'll be locked up. What'd you make of that?"

He didn't know how much of this was baiting him-- not much, really. If so, it was one of his worse attempts. But it was a curious feeling to be meeting some guy who'd probably consider hunting witches a nice hobby. He wanted to get a better sense of him. You know, to make sure he wouldn't be killed if Heahmund did consider him a witch.
heahmund: (RgJ7nSi)

[personal profile] heahmund 2018-08-23 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Heahmund looked a bit disgusted by the idea. "That would certainly not be God's will," he states more than confidently. Heathens are not something he is open-minded about in the least, clearly. He would not really understand the modern way that Christians and Heathens seem to cohabitate peacefully. Then again, he is not generally peaceful in nature. There's a violence that boils under the surface a God fueled rage that isn't really suited to peace.

"There are those that have tried to confine me before," Heahmund says simply. "God will have his way."
somnioergosum: (Shake off that chill of heaven)

[personal profile] somnioergosum 2018-08-25 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
That was so not comforting. At this point, Ronan began to have a feeling that maybe he was about to make another very questionable friendship or at least association. Didn't stop him, of course, not yet.

"Sure, when you get your trip back home. You're not confined it just takes them a wh-- you know, forget it. I'm not a spokesperson for their crazy quarantine." Though it could be a fun job, he'd be fired the second he tried to give a speech. "So you just hate all heathens?"

Still trying to figure out if he was going to be murdered. This would be a lot easier if he hadn't started caring about that.

Even after a shift at guard duty, Elizabeth could bring herself to sleep in late after a long night. Years of habit, discipline, and training wouldn't allow it. In truth, she preferred the early morning hours, when the world seemed calm, like it was only just waking up.

Dressed in loose trousers and knee length, tunic-gown, she walked over to the selection of weapons, taking a straight sword from the rack. Much as the use of firearms was preferred on the field, her preference was always on swords and daggers. There was an art to them, a sort of balance that she'd grown to appreciate.

Elizabeth made her way to one of the mats. This early in the morning, there were few in the training center to spar with, but that was little matter to her at the moment. All she had to do was close her eyes, imagine herself surrounded by four opponents; they came at her and she immediately began to dodge and return the imaginary attacks.

The technique itself was familiar ones, taught to her years ago by her Shaolin master. More than just exercise, muscles could retain memory as much as the brain, and constant conditioning and training kept it as sharp as education did for the latter. Even when she saw another guard member within her sight, she didn't stop from the routine; why should she feel embarrassed or self-conscious, when this was for her own benefit and skill.

By the time it was over, she relaxed her stance and acknowledged him with a bow.

Heahmund doesn't sleep much here. There's always too much noise, too many heathens and very little peace to be found. There's precious little comfort to be found, no one that is like of mind -- funnily enough Ivar is the closest to something he can relate to here and they are polar opposites in their beliefs although their methods are echoes of one another that is something that at times gives Heahmund great pause.

There'd been no purpose in mind when he came to the area. He watched Elizabeth who he knew mostly in passing. She reminded him very much of shieldmaidens but there is a grace to her movements rather than the heathen bloodlust of those women. Not that he's sure whether she is any less pagan or not.

He inclined his head slightly in greeting. Regardless, she was a good fighter.

Her manner relaxed as she set herself at ease. "Good morning," She greeted, twisting the sword handle between her fingers. The blade swung in easy, slow circles.

Something about the man reminded her of Darcy, but whereas the colonel had the easy that could flip into a warrior, this man appeared like he could stab a person soon as look at them. "I do not suppose you have found any other christians within the perimeter?"

Of course she recalled the message he posted on the Network, and far be from her not to poke it at him.

"Only a very few," Heahmund says, his expression not changing in the least. It doesn't take much to know that he's displeased with it and that converting others is not an easy task and neither is it one that he is very suited for.

"Have you never considered just letting the matter go." She stopped twirling the sword and started to walk from the center of the mat. "The Portal takes people from all worlds and eras. You cannot believe it is the worst for a person not to believe, if they have never heard of the Christian religion."

Given her countries own history over religion, she herself wasn't entirely concerned. There were a few Jewish families in their village after all, and while she couldn't agree with them, the constant threat of the Undead did put things into perspective. "Of course, in my own world, the talk of various faiths is no longer taken seriously. All that matters is the contribution to the defense of England."
heahmund: (Default)

[personal profile] heahmund 2018-08-30 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
"No," Heahmund answers without hesitation, looking not impressed at all at her added information. "If they choose not to believe once they have or they refuse to listen then, yes."

Heahmund frowns. "Perhaps that is why England would be in such dire circumstances."

[personal profile] wit_and_sword 2018-08-30 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
She frowned, something in her mind finally clicking. He spoke of england, but his way of dress, and his name itself-they were not of 'her' England. "No..." She spoke carefully. "Our current predicament has to do with a plague, believed to have been sent over by France, where victims die only to return as flesh eating undead."

Well, they mostly hungered for brains, but really, any sort of human flesh was sought after.

"What..what era are you from? No one has really cared about religious state of England since, around the Civil war." Or if they did, the political climate wasn't so shaken as it was.

[personal profile] heahmund 2018-09-05 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Heahmund still wouldn't be completely unconvinced that all couldn't have all been part of a retribution from God for something but he won't argue with her just now.

"The 8th century," Heahmund answers, raising a brow at her. "People should not abandon religion no matter what has happened."
wit_and_sword: (resolved/resign)

[personal profile] wit_and_sword 2018-09-07 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
She opened her mouth to say that they had not abandoned relgion; they just no longer saw it as the 'cure-all defense' for their plight. Yet, she stopped mid thought when he told her of what era he was from.

"The eighth century?" She repeated, her mind backtracking. While she knew not all of her history coincided with some, that was only as far as the Zombie Threat had gone. The rest, as far as she was able to deduce, had gone as per usual to match with the books.

On the one hand, now it made sense; his name was extremely old fashioned, and while his accent was different, she could still recognize it as English, but it also meant he was completely behind. "It is the early eighteenth century when I arrived here. Christianity is still around, but..oh dear, a lot has happened over a thousand years."

The start of which being that some centuries before her own, the king of England deciding to break off from the Church of Rome because they wouldn't grant him a divorce.

[See that husky dog ambling on over? The one with a very distinct pair of crystal-blue eyes? Doesn't it just look so fluffy and adorable? Ivar's feeling in fine form today as his dog nose recognizes Heahmund's scent. The dog half of his brain is a lot more aware about the way he feels then Ivar usually is, so he decides to head on over to the priest, and make his presence known.

This involves bounding on up to Heahmund with a wagging tail and sitting right next to him. He tilts his head toward Heahmund. The priest looks like he still has a stick wedged up his backside. Well, petting a dog is just the ticket to relaxation. So get to it, bishop.]
heahmund: (Default)

[personal profile] heahmund 2018-08-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ Heahmund notices the dog and he's not particularly interested in it as it makes it's way over. After all, he doesn't know about Ivar's little ability yet and had he he probably wouldn't be anymore inclined to give the dog attention -- maybe even less so. So, the dog sits beside him and Heahmund glances at it and raises a brow.

He has no intention of petting you, Ivar. Has he ever pet a dog? Not for years is it's probably certain. ]

I don't have anything for you. [ He does say to the dog. ]
ragnarsson: ([11.6] Interested)

[personal profile] ragnarsson 2018-08-18 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Ivar's ears twitch towards Heahmund when he speaks. What's this? No petting? Just what kind of nonsense is this? Who doesn't love a dog? People with no souls and apparently Bishop Heahmund. Ivar shifts just a little bit closer until he's right next to the priest. He reaches out with a paw and taps him with it with a bit of impatience.

He demands attention in this form, which really isn't all that far off the mark for Ivar's usual human behavior. Now he's just adorable enough that most people just give into his demands. He taps Heahmund again, whining a little in the back of his throat. Give in, you stubborn man.]
heahmund: (pic#11969370)

[personal profile] heahmund 2018-08-23 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Really, what could Ivar or anyone expect of Heahmund? He wasn't even particularly attached to his horses past how they could be used in battle and what not. There was no emotional connection to it, of course. That is nonsense. He frowns as Ivar paws at him and he makes a shooing motion with his hand though he doesn't actually make a move like he'd do anything to physically dissuade the dog. ]

Get. [ Heahmund commands, confused, really, at this dog's persistence. What does it want even? It's not like Heahmund has food. ]
ragnarsson: ([12.20] Please listen)

[personal profile] ragnarsson 2018-08-25 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
[Rather than taking off, Ivar goes right up to Heahmund, and lays down with his head in the priest's lap. He doesn't think Heahmund would harm an animal unless he felt threatened by one and Ivar in this form is much more cuddly than full of psychotic rage.

He wriggles forward a few inches, staring up at him with those big, soulful blue eyes, and whines again. How can you resist a dog this cute? (And, let's face it, this needy?)]
heahmund: (Default)

[personal profile] heahmund 2018-08-25 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Heahmund is not sure at all how to react when the animal decides to just put his head on his lap. He hadn’t generally had good rapport with dogs — maybe they’re a different kind of judge of character and one had never behaved this way toward him before.

Heahmund watches the dog and shakes his head. It is really tempting to shove him off but he has a feeling this dog doesn’t know how to take a hint. Hopefully, giving in won’t encourage it to keep bothering him later.

He then gives Ivar’s furry head some reluctant pets. Stubbornly, not admitting to himself that it’s actually kind of nice. ]
