Unfortunately, my class ran late today.

[He reached out a hand to meet Kirk's, shaking it firmly. If pressed, he'd say the other man was rather impressive in how quickly he'd been picking up the steps. He was a fast learner, which made things all the more easy for Richard.]

Technically, what you've learned now would suffice, but I assume you're looking for something a bit more advanced.
