Accidentally on Purpose Birthday Proposal
Who: Ronan and Adam
What: Birthday celebration turns into a proposal
When: July 3rd
Where: In a car, then a parking lot
Warnings: Fluff and making out guaranteed. Definitely ending in sex. Will update more as needed.
Ronan had done what he thought was his best for Adam's birthday last year. Dinner, a gift, and a lot of making out. But Adam had really raised the bar when Ronan turned 19. Getting a home just for them? That was something else.
Not that Ronan planned on turning this into a competition. He just wanted to do something special, something Adam deserved. So he did something very unusual. He came up with a sort of schedule. Sort of, because it was all vague and in his head. It went something like this: make breakfast, wait until Adam finished work, and then take him out somewhere nice.
He'd done his best with breakfast. It wasn't burnt. But it was clear that he'd have to step up his game. He'd taken the whole day off to get this right. He took care of the pets to make sure they wouldn't get anxious while they were gone for so long. Then, drove to Adam's work several minutes before his shift ended.
While he waited, he idly rubbed a ring between his fingers. He'd made several of them, none of them perfect until this one. It was silver with leaves and designs engraved into it. The diamond was neither large nor modest. Ronan thought it suited him well. He also thought he wouldn't actually propose for a while longer. But he kept carrying it around, too afraid to lose it or Adam stumble upon it. He slipped it back into his pocket and stepped out of the car when he saw Adam.
"Hey. Want to go for a ride?"

But he kept carrying it around, too afraid to lose it or Adam stumble upon it. He slipped it back into his pocket and stepped out of the car when he saw Adam.
"Hey. Want to go for a ride?"

The breakfast settled it, but Adam only gratefully accepted it without mentioning the date. He worried about encouraging anything more, and wondered if that was fair. Mostly, he just didn't know how to accept birthday celebrations.
So when he caught sight of Ronan's BMW outside of the garage, he looked skeptical. It wasn't rare for Ronan to take him for a drive after work, but he wondered how normal this drive would be.
It wasn't like he was going to say no, though. "Looks like I'll have to," he said with a smile, walking over to give his boyfriend a peck on the lips before heading to his seat. "Anywhere in particular?"

“It’s a surprise.” He got back into the car. Once they were back on the street, Ronan held out his hand for Adam.
“Only you would work today,” he said affectionately. “Are you hungry? We can grab something first.”
So it wasn’t dinner he’d planned.
no subject
"What else would I be doing?" He couldn't imagine what people did on their birthdays if they paused their lives for the whole day. His skepticism only seemed to grow, trying to work out the right response. He didn't think he really wanted a surprise, but he also didn't want to hurt Ronan by shutting it down.
"You can't tell me there's a surprise and expect me to wait through dinner. We can eat later."
no subject
“Sleep in. Eat cake. Do nothing.” Have sex with your boyfriend went unsaid though it was probably the only thing from Ronan’s list that would stand a chance against Adam working.
“Oh yeah, there’s a cake in the fridge if you want.” He bought it. He could manage breakfast but knew better than to trust himself with baking.
It became clear he wasn’t taking them home. He was staying in Riverview but going to the less populated area. It didn’t take then long and Ronan’s
anxietysense of anticipation rose with it. He was taking a chance with this.no subject
It might have to be, since he was getting an idea of what Ronan had in mind as they drove somewhere more isolated. At least, there was one thing they always did when they drove to an uninhabited location.
He hummed in consideration once they arrived. "Don't tell me you're going to do a repeat performance of my arrival. But without the abandoned building?"
no subject
He stopped outside a building alright, but he parked them in the center of a parking lot full of shopping carts. They weren't exactly as he remembered, but close enough. Making them had been a change of pace from the endless dreams of rings.
He leaned back in his seat, looked at Adam, and smiled. "Happy birthday."
no subject
"You can't be serious," he said, but he knew Ronan was. "Trying out all of these will definitely kill us."
no subject
As far as he could tell, no one really came here. And if someone changed their minds about it, he could always find some other place and make more carts.
Ronan squeezed back, then raised Adam's hand to his mouth and kissed it.
He'd spent a lot of time lately feeling down. Gansey and Blue were gone and he was terrified that Adam would leave him too. But surrounded by these carts, he just remembered they weren't gone. They just went back to their road trip, just like he and Adam would go back to Henrietta some day. When that happened, what the relationship they'd built wouldn't end. They loved each other too much to let anything part them.
no subject
"Thanks, Ronan." His voice was soft and genuine, overcome with how much he loved his boyfriend. Somehow, Ronan always gave him what he needed.
He carefully parted their hold to get out of the car, and began inspecting the carts. They all looked similar, but some rolled differently, some squeaked. Just like real carts.
He picked one with wobbly front wheels and pulled it out of the mass.

Ronan followed him out, standing back until the selection was made. Then he pointed at the cart. "Get in, Parrish."
no subject
"Next time, it's you. In the one with the missing wheel."
no subject
He walked over to the cart and grabbed the handles. He steered it toward the longest stretch of space empty space. There were no other cars or anything else but his own and he wasn't going to risk damaging it. Adam would get off lucky this time. Probably.
"One, two--" He didn't wait for three before he started running.
There was little to no slope, but he kept going forward. He laughed and they gained speed until they started to reach the end. He tried decelerating but this was no car. It wasn't as simple as hitting the brakes. The cart started to wobble. He laughed louder even as they toppled over together.
no subject
He could tell as Ronan tried to pull back that they were reaching the end, and the wobbling made him instinctively wrap his arms around himself.
Whether or not that helped, he didn't die. His breath was knocked out of him and his entire back was sore, but nothing seemed broken. He opened his eyes to find himself near Ronan's foot and used it to pull himself closer. "Some birthday," he said, breathless but not mad at all.
no subject
"Want to go again?" He grinned before leaning down and kissing him.
He loved this feeling. Light and breathless and full of love. So Ronan was an idiot, but Adam was the kind who knew how to enjoy being with him. Despite his complaints, Ronan knew he didn't mind. He knew him.
no subject
He pulled back only when his neck began to scream at him and he rested his head against the pavement. "If we go again, I'm not gonna have any bones left in me for tonight."
And he pushed up for another kiss.
no subject
Ronan caressed his face, then brushed back his hair as he pulled away again. He stared into Adam's eyes. He couldn't say just what came over him. But images kept swirling in his mind of the past blending into the present and he could see the future sprawled out before him. The details were vague and uncertain, but through it all there was Adam to come home to, share a bed with. They could just be themselves.
"Marry me."
no subject
If it were anyone but Ronan, he would have laughed. If it were anyone but Ronan, it would have been a joke to propose here like this, at their age.
But he knew immediately that Ronan was serious, and he wondered if it was stupid to say yes. He'd planned on marrying Ronan since the night he realized he was in love with him―it was just something that came with dating him. If he wasn't serious about it, he never would have kissed him back.
So what did it matter if he said yes now or ten years in the future? They lived together, they had pets together, their entire lives were already utterly tangled together. No one else was going to make him feel this happy after crashing into asphalt.
"Okay," his voice was small because he hardly realized it was coming out his mouth. His smile grew along with his confidence, "Yeah. Yes. We should―let's―" What was he supposed to say? He reached up and pulled Ronan in for yet another kiss because he couldn't think of anything else to do.
no subject
He returned the kiss with even more passion. Burying his fingers in Adam's hair, it took him a good while to remember there was something else he needed to do. And if Adam wanted to judge him for it, he could feel free. He'd already agreed.
"Hold on," He pulled away and moved off of Adam. "Come on, stand up." He slapped Adam's leg.
no subject
He groaned when Ronan moved away, reaching out to try to grab him back. The only reason he didn't was because he figured Ronan had something else in mind, likely involving the backseat of the BMW.
"Jesus," he grumbled as he stiffly pushed himself up. "This is how you treat your fiance?" As much as he tried to hide his smile, it was obvious when he hopped up and brushed himself off.
no subject
He reached into his pocket. He brushed his fingers over the ring for one more time before pulling it out. He held it out for Adam. The diamond shone in the sunlight and now, finally, he didn't have to keep it buried.
He'd already asked the question so there was no sense in repeating it. Unfortunately, he didn't know what else he was supposed to say. If his fantasies had been that detailed, then he couldn't remember the specifics of this part. In the end he only stared at Adam expectantly, no, hopefully. Ronan had worked so hard to make it. He wanted Adam to love it.
no subject
But he did and Adam felt like his brain had shortcircuited. His face turned red as he looked over the ring, beautiful and finely tuned to Adam's taste and sporting a diamond.
"Did you... did you plan this?" He asked, just baffled. He couldn't tell what was stranger: Ronan creating an entire plan to propose to him in the middle of an abandoned parking lot or Ronan carrying a ring around in his pocket for the right time to use it.
no subject
"No, just the parking lot. I couldn't think of anywhere else to hide it." After all, Adam was usually more concerned with taking his pants off, not digging into his pockets.
Now feeling even more awkward on his knees, he stood. "Take it."
no subject
He realized only when Ronan stood that he hadn't actually taken the ring. That probably should have come before his question, but he hadn't been thinking properly. He smiled and grabbed the ring, then gingerly placed it on his ring finger.
"Perfect fit," he said smugly. He took Ronan's hand and stepped close, pressing their heads together. "When did you dream it?"
no subject
Ronan looked away from Adam's hand and closed his eyes. He rested his forehead against Adam's. The smile on his lips never once faded.
"A couple of days ago," he admitted. It would probably surprise Adam more that he'd waited this long. "I went through several until I got it right."
no subject
"Wow," he murmured, definitely more impressed that Ronan had managed to wait. "I think any ring would have been right." He looked down at the ring to admire it. This one was perfect, though. It seemed to belong on his finger, a natural extension of him, but also held elements of Ronan in it.
He leaned in for a couple of quick kisses before he started tugging Ronan in the direction of the BMW.
no subject
As Ronan pressed their hips together, he leaned in and kissed Adam's cheek. After that he went back for his lips. He briefly pulled away. "You deserve the best."
When they got home, Ronan fully intended to give it to him. The best home, the best life, the best husband. As close as they could come to perfection, he wanted it for Adam.
no subject
Ronan's words were what made him dizzy. It was a shock to the system after a lifetime of hearing you deserve this in a very different way. It was hard to reconcile and he paused noticeably, eyes flickering to the side as he tried to bring himself back to the moment.
Ronan made it easy. He always snapped Adam out of his moments, and now Adam relaxed into his fiance's arms when their eyes met again. "You too," he replied, finally. He would get Ronan the best wedding and the perfect house, he just needed time. A thought distracted him before he became anxious about that.
He was only now remembering the date. "So now both of our birthdays are anniversaries. I think you did plan this."
no subject
Planned this? Adam was the mastermind, not Ronan, but he liked that he could think so highly of him. Ronan was not a thinker, he felt too much and too hard. Ideas just came to him either in dreams or at the spur of the moment, or in a vague spark that he gave to someone else to kindle. He just knew that he wanted to make Adam happy today, on a day that he should love.
"I dunno," he said. "Maybe in the back of my head."
His hands slipped under Adam's shirt and he traced his fingers along his sides, then down to his hips. They'd have to get inside the car soon, but for now it was good enough to press his hips to his fiancé's and kiss him.
no subject
Maybe he just liked everything about Ronan. He traced his cheekbones tenderly, kisses soft and breathless, entirely reverent. They didn't manage a slow pace like this often, and he could tell from the way Ronan's touches were wandering that it wouldn't last long.
He reached to his side to grab the door handle and maneuvered them into the backseat. He knew how to position himself to get them both to fit, long limbs and all.
"So," he said, once the door was closed, "Should we tell everyone to start calling you Ronan Parrish?"
no subject
"We're the Parrish-Lynches or the Lynches," he said firmly before kissing Adam's neck.
Not that Ronan minded if Adam kept his name, but kissing up and along his jaw was more appealing than starting an argument about names.
no subject
Instead, he leaned his head back to give Ronan access before capturing his lips in a messy kiss. He sucked on Ronan's bottom lip and only pulled away to take his fiance's shirt off.
"We'll wait until we're home, right?" His voice was a little rushed, like he had too many thoughts swirling around his mind to keep inside. More ideas and questions just kept popping up. "At St. Agnes?"
no subject
"Where else? Everyone's gotta be there. I figure you can have Gansey for best man this once and Matthew can be mine." It seemed a fair way to do it. Ronan might have thought it over several times.
He opted not to take off Adam's shirt and went right for his pants. It didn't take too long to unzip them and tug them down.
no subject
His hands moved down Ronan's back, scratching lightly. "This once?" he asked, leaning in to kiss at his collarbone. "How many weddings are we going to have?"
More plans popped into his head as his fingers dipped below Ronan's waistband. "The dogs can be the ring bearers."
no subject
"By the time you're done training them not to eat the rings, they'll be too fat to walk." His hand moved to the back of Adam's neck. He slid his fingers down his spine, wordlessly urging him to keep kissing his collarbone, neck, or anything spread out before him as long as it belonged to Ronan.
no subject
For as much of a hurry as they seemed to be in, Adam took the time to smooth his hands along Ronan's ass. "I wouldn't mind a few weddings. If we have a honeymoon for each one."
He sucked a bruises into spots that wouldn't be hidden by a shirt, his way to claim Ronan while they waited on a ring.
no subject
"Are you gonna pay for them all?" He quickened his pace, stroking Adam faster, pausing only to tease at the slit of his cock. "Make each one bigger than the last."
He personally didn't care how extravagant it was. If they got home and broke into St. Agnes just to have their own private ceremony, he didn't care. But he knew Adam's ambitions and his need for independence. Ronan wasn't about to deprive him of that.
no subject
One hand sought out Ronan's cock to return the favor, while the other kept its hold on his ass to make his hips rock into Adam's tight grip. It took him a few moments to respond instead of just groaning when he opened his mouth.
"I'll give you the very best," he replied earnestly. He tilted his head up to find Ronan's lips, messily kissing the side of his mouth a few times. "You deserve everything."
