[Victor has heard so much about the various explorations, and this is the first time he can justify going himself. He's honestly been wanting to get out on the field for a while, and his conversation with Jyn during James's party made the idea even more prominent. He does need to see what people face in order to heal them properly, and the fact that he gets to search around a labyrinth is a pretty big plus]

It's incredibly elaborate. The First People certainly didn't want to make it easy for anyone to get to the center and find whatever gave the Guardians their title. I don't think it's a minotaur, though, for what it's worth.
