Superheroes had been around, but they'd vanished. People with powers did exist, but they were the target of hate groups and persecution. It was a harder world, that John came from, and Cisco makes a mental note not to forget it. He doesn't want to inadvertently say or do anything that might alarm the guy, or bring up bad memories.
Better, then, to redirect his focus back to the present, and away from the crises on his own world, that he cannot help with right now. That was what they'd talked about on Cisco's birthday, after all. John needing to learn to allow himself to relax, to live in the present rather than fretting over things he cannot fix or change. ]
