sampremi celebration

In the days leading up to March 8th, new residents may notice advertising around the city, everywhere from digital screens to paper flyers pasted on blank walls, featuring the name of the spring holiday in celebration of new beginnings, new love, and lust: Sampremi. The advertising mentions that there will be street festivals set up at various locations throughout the week and lists where the market will be set up on each day.

street market

The main draw of the holiday is a roaming street market that features special treats and street food that can only be found during Sampremi, a bustling bargain market with any kind of goods you can think of, and fair games that allow a person to win a prize for that special someone.

i. street food

One of the major draws of the festival is the special street food that can only be obtained this time of year. Almost everything you can buy at the Sampremi Festival is meant to be shared - whether it's one piece of meat on two sticks or desserts baked with a narrow part in the middle for convenient tearing, everything is built in twos. The stalls sell everything from cups of soup, sandwiches, roasted or fried meat, deep-fried vegetables and cakes, dumplings, donuts, bagels, turnovers, and anything else you can think of.

Many of the savory dishes are based on the meat of a particular fowl native to the moon Riverview is situated on that has a taste and texture halfway between chicken and duck, cooked to be spicy (ranging from very mild to throat-burning). Many of the desserts are based around a fruit native to the moon that is spherical, red-orange, and has a light sweet taste that is similar to a combination of mango, pineapple, and strawberry. Both ingredients are considered to be aphrodisiacs. Of course, the foods aren't actually aphrodisiacs and any effect is purely placebo.

ii. fair games

The festival features an entire row of fair games ranging from very high-tech games featuring virtual reality and neon holograms to extremely old-fashioned games with darts and balloons or balls and glasses. The games all have prizes in various shapes and sizes, with the standard stuffed animals, but also with goods and special items donated by any business in the city; ranging from tiny prizes to huge and expensive ones.

Due to the nature of the holiday, many of the stalls are set up to cater to winning a prize for your partner, and due to the nature of the Quarantine, a lot of them involve aiming or other aspects of pretending to fight.

iii. shopping

Originally, the part of the street festival that involved an actual market, with stalls and booths set up with goods, was aimed primarily at romantic trinkets like flowers or jewelry, gifts intended to be purchased for a loved one. As time has gone by, however, this aspect of the market has increased, with many businesses participating, though the emphasis is still on small businesses and anything relating to local culture rather than booths for any of the larger more corporate businesses.

There is still plenty of jewelry to be found, for sure, mostly handmade and artisan, but the scope of the Market has widened immeasurably. The Sampremi Market is an excellent place to find specialty foods, clothing, jewelry, art, or other goods that were originally native to cultures on other planets in this reality, or other realities altogether. Many residents in the city use the market to share their unique cultural goods and traditional dress with others.

iv. adult

In a side alley of the Sampremi Market on any day, one can find an area roped off with a red silken cord, attended by members of the Perimeter Guard in casual dress who will ID anyone entering to make sure they are 18+. Once characters are permitted entry, they will find all of the adult offerings that the market has to offer.

Since Sampremi is, historically, a celebration of lust and physical love, the adult offerings are all set up to cater to two or more people of any sex or gender configuration. One can find an adult or sexualized version of almost anything that's featured in the main market, from fair games to adult goods to street food laced with actual aphrodisiacs (there are always warnings for food spiked in this way to avoid accidental consumption).

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set at the Sampremi Festival, feel free to write it up!

I. Street Food (OTA)
It wasn't mango. That was pretty much her take away, and you'd think 'well, close enough, right?' But no, no not right. It wasn't mango, it was like a cheap tease of 'you wish I was mango.' Still, it was the best tasting thing she'd found, and she bought it, but it just wasn't the same. The street fair itself had that same impact, it wasn't Kaladesh. It was close, so very close, but it didn't smell right. There were no aether eddies running through the air, nobody unloading their wares with an army of servos.

She thought the fun of a fair would get her mind off being trapped on a single plane, but it just made her sadder to be here without anyone else... poor sad pyromancer sitting alone.
III. Street Games (OTA)
What Chandra could do was beat some rigged games! Her parents taught her all the tricks a fair game could have to be 'impossible' and Chandra was a quick study (if she didn't have to build anything). And so many planes had fairs like this, and the games were always rigged. She stuck to the games she was more familiar with. And she kept winning, and getting excited and her hair would start to spark. Nobody said anything... I imagine it had to do with her hair sparking.

But she was sitting thinking about what game to try next. She had a dozen cute stuffed animals. Well... for a given definition of 'cute.' Almost all of them were a fuzzy stuffed animal version of a bug, lizard, or monstrous dangerous thing. None were quite gremlins, but they'd do for now. Her roommate won't mind, right?
?? Wildcard (OTA)
Chandra had found several youths who took over a street corner to dance. Most of them were dancing with a partner, probably in part to do with the lovey dovey nature of this holiday thing. Chandra sat on a short wall and watched for a while, then got closer, standing at the back of the crowd, cheering and clapping with the rest as the dancers moved. Some of the onlookers played instruments. They seemed to take their cues from the dancers.

"Newcomer, your turn?"

Chandra froze up at the words, she wasn't nearly as good as they were. She was a clumsy awkward thing if she was on the spot, but... she could totally make this work? Right? There was one dance they wouldn't know the importance of. Chandra put her goggles on, and motioned everyone to take a few steps back. She started tapping her foot to a simple rhythm, the musicians picking it up and giving her something to work with.

And she started doing one of the ceremonial dances from Regatha, one she didn't suck at as much as the others. Now, the reason she needed the space became apparent shortly, the watching crowds didn't freak out too much at the flames Chandra lashed into the sky as she moved. Look, if you are doing a ceremonial fire monk dance, the flames are important, they mean something. But to her audience it was just a neat trick from an outsider.

...Hopefully nothing catches fire. She is doing her best to control herself, but she's really bad at that.

Scott likes to think of himself as a certified bad ass/hero. He's saved the world! Right?

But that doesn't mean that he's any damn good at carnival games. Like, at all. Still, Scott Lang is not a man for giving up, so he's going to keep trying this one. You know the one--where you try to toss ping pong balls into little goldfish bowls? Except instead of goldfish, uh, what even ARE those? It doesn't matter, because Scott sucks at this game. So badly, that his most recent toss spoings (that's a technical term!) off the edge of the bowl, aiming right at the redheaded girl's face. "...duck?"

Chandra's aware of her own history, saving the planes, punching bad guys in the face, setting unspeakable illogical horrors from the depths on fire. That last one was impressive since she shouldn't have been able to do that.

So getting hit in the face with a little plastic ball shouldn't have surprised her to the point she reacted. And yet, the ambient temperature around her spiked, the ball melted on its way to the ground after hitting her. And her hair was on fire. No, not accurate, her hair was fire. She glared around for the cause of her surprise. Realized... it wasn't a threat, she wasn't harmed... and the little ping pong ball was a melted puddle on the counter. "...oops."

It took a few moments for her hair to go out, and unceremoniously fall around her face and head in a mess of copper strands. "I kinda melted your ball there."

You know, there's some kind of testicle/unmanning joke to be made out of the whole 'melted ball' thing, but Scott's not gonna make it. Not because he's not the type, but because, well, he's trying NOT to be that type. Good guy. He's the good guy now. Good guys probably don't make nut jokes in front of women.

Even normal women and not women who could do that.

"Yeah, uh, wow. That's pretty cool!" He'd seen Wanda do some pretty cool stuff, but wow, that was...awesome.

Being Good wasn't all about slaying great evils and righting wrongs across the world and being a hero. Oh sure, those things counted, but there was more to it than that. Sometimes it meant just noticing how down someone looked, and doing what you could about it.

"Kind of a single-minded festival, don't you think? Everything's meant to be shared" he said, sitting nearby as he offered up a cinnamon roll to her, heart-shaped and meant to be split down the middle. Grab and pull.

"Yeah, it's crap timing we're here now, right in time for a festival all about people that aren't here with us." Chandra's mind jumped to dragging Nissa around a street fair like this, trying to show her everything. Nissa freaking out at all the people and noise and the two of them retreating to a garden out of the way and quiet. Or Gideon, someone who would actually enjoy all the noise, and people, and food. He might even wear a shirt.

This guy looked like the sort Gideon would like, "I'm Chandra."

"Roy Greenhilt," he said, with a nod and a brief flash of a smile. "I kind of had the impression you were relatively new here. We tend to stick out, I think."

Recognizing another PC was never too difficult, after all.

"Missing someone, I take it?"

"I'm not wearing the local clothes." Chandra always wondered how people never noticed planeswalkers. Except Jace who just made people think he was local. Stupid mind mage. Chandra wore a mix of items from across the planes. Armor and gear she picked up from wherever she was, and liked. "Not that the stuff is bad, I'm just more comfortable in my own stuff."

"Some people, we decided to work together, travel together. I keep thinking about how they'd like this place." How is it she always ended up alone? She will just glumly nibble on cinnamon roll. Yes, yes somehow you can eat something that sticky and gooey and good and be glum.

"Oh, yeah. I miss my party too. And about a year ago if you told me I was going to say that and mean it for personal reasons, I'd have attempted to subdue you and get you proper medical treatment for your obvious and hopeless insanity." Roy smiled sidelong at her, wry but sincere. "Sorry it's got you down. But hopefully you'll meet new friends and comrades here. Not to replace your old ones, but to play their own part in your lives."

"Well, that and this fair kinda reminds me of where I'm from. Just... not quite. It's like when you see something that's almost safe but your ears itch and you're pretty sure its a trap." Missing the other members of the watch, and her mom, was one thing. But it was also just where they were, and the fact that she couldn't planeswalk. Nothing felt wrong with her, she felt like herself, but this place... it was weird. "Finding new comrades might be fun, let me see what's outside those walls and really put my skills to use."

Chandra Nalaar was bad for property values.

[personal profile] greatcleavage 2017-03-10 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
At some point Roy will find that out and they might need to talk...

"I'm itching to get out there myself, honestly," Roy said, cheered by her mention of something much on his mind. "Adventuring is pretty much my thing. What skills do you have to put to use?"
firelogic: (Say hello to my little Friend)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-10 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"My friends went from plane to plane fighting dangers bigger than any one of us could handle. We each have a different magic we use, mine is fire." Chandra eats the next bit of cinnamon roll with more energy than she had been showing as she makes a soft ball of flame in her hand. Then starts tossing it up and down casually like it wasn't a ball of very dangerous fire in her hand.

"I'm very good at setting monsters on fire. Although really big monsters required one of the others helping me make the spell big enough." That was fun, exhausting, and she couldn't really move right for a while after... but honestly setting two world rending monsters on fire was thrilling. "I take it you punch stuff, or stab stuff, or punch and stab stuff?"
greatcleavage: (sometimes things do go right?)

[personal profile] greatcleavage 2017-03-10 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Roy was honestly very impressed by the idea that she had engaged in interplanar adventuring, though he tried not to let it show too blatantly.

"Well, I am trained in unarmed combat, but my primary damage vector is indeed weapon-based." Roy motioned to the greatsword slung over his back, incidentally also explaining his last name in the process. "Single-classed fighter, and proud of it."
firelogic: (Leave my Mark)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-10 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Is the name because of the sword, or the sword because of the name?" Chandra did put a sword with a green hilt and the name Greenhilt together, but they could really go either way as to if it was a nickname because of the sword, or the other way around.

"I'm figuring with the wall, and the other wall outside that wall. And all the guards. This is definitely a place where having some trick to make things dead is good." Hence why she was wearing her armor. That and she hadn't bought much in the way of alternative clothes. Just changes of undershirts and other necessities. She doesn't have a lot of needs anyway.
greatcleavage: (talky man)

[personal profile] greatcleavage 2017-03-10 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"The latter. This weapon is my family's ancestral weapon -- a legacy weapon at that." Which he no longer had the instruction book to, sadly enough. Whatever it did for him, he'd have to develop on his own. Oh well.

Roy wore his armor almost constantly as a rule, so seeing someone else doing so meant nothing to him. "Now to be fair, I would always prefer resolving matters peacefully and through negotiation and diplomacy where possible... which doesn't detract from a word of your statement. I saw the monsters that attacked recently," he said, grimly. "I don't doubt there's worse out there, and that we'd be doing the right thing dealing with them as needed. Which would be easier with an accomplished mage on my team!" he added with a quick smile.
firelogic: (Red Eyes Take Warning)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-12 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Where I'm from innovation is the thing, ancestral things are kept but never really important." Kaladesh was all about innovation, growth, creativity, and change. The city she grew up in, and the city she was just in before here? Barely looked the same. Smelled the same, same kinds of people. But the buildings, the machines, it was all new. "I don't think there was anything my parents had they hadn't made. Although it was usually based off the things my grandparents made."

Chandra's smirk was playful, she nodded along with the idea of negotiation and diplomacy. It wasn't that she hated the idea, she was actually almost good at some of them. Not with people that disagreed with her, but if the collected audience was just apprehensive she could... talk them up. But she'd prefer to have access to fire. "Not sure how good an idea taking a fire mage into a forest is. I mean I wanna explore, there's gotta be something neat out there if there are monsters! But I'm pretty sure I'll make a lot of the locals unhappy.
greatcleavage: (talky man)

[personal profile] greatcleavage 2017-03-13 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Considering I wasn't aware we had a pyromancer in the quarantine until you told me, I don't think I have cause to worry about your control and focus." After all, how would a fire mage have expressed her displeasure at being brought here? At being told she was pulled away from her world and the people that matter to her? And yet Roy hadn't heard the very familiar sounds of damaging evocations at any point. "And without meaning to diminish you in the slightest, there's a long list of things that need to be done and not a lot of people up to doing it all."
