sampremi celebration

In the days leading up to March 8th, new residents may notice advertising around the city, everywhere from digital screens to paper flyers pasted on blank walls, featuring the name of the spring holiday in celebration of new beginnings, new love, and lust: Sampremi. The advertising mentions that there will be street festivals set up at various locations throughout the week and lists where the market will be set up on each day.

street market

The main draw of the holiday is a roaming street market that features special treats and street food that can only be found during Sampremi, a bustling bargain market with any kind of goods you can think of, and fair games that allow a person to win a prize for that special someone.

i. street food

One of the major draws of the festival is the special street food that can only be obtained this time of year. Almost everything you can buy at the Sampremi Festival is meant to be shared - whether it's one piece of meat on two sticks or desserts baked with a narrow part in the middle for convenient tearing, everything is built in twos. The stalls sell everything from cups of soup, sandwiches, roasted or fried meat, deep-fried vegetables and cakes, dumplings, donuts, bagels, turnovers, and anything else you can think of.

Many of the savory dishes are based on the meat of a particular fowl native to the moon Riverview is situated on that has a taste and texture halfway between chicken and duck, cooked to be spicy (ranging from very mild to throat-burning). Many of the desserts are based around a fruit native to the moon that is spherical, red-orange, and has a light sweet taste that is similar to a combination of mango, pineapple, and strawberry. Both ingredients are considered to be aphrodisiacs. Of course, the foods aren't actually aphrodisiacs and any effect is purely placebo.

ii. fair games

The festival features an entire row of fair games ranging from very high-tech games featuring virtual reality and neon holograms to extremely old-fashioned games with darts and balloons or balls and glasses. The games all have prizes in various shapes and sizes, with the standard stuffed animals, but also with goods and special items donated by any business in the city; ranging from tiny prizes to huge and expensive ones.

Due to the nature of the holiday, many of the stalls are set up to cater to winning a prize for your partner, and due to the nature of the Quarantine, a lot of them involve aiming or other aspects of pretending to fight.

iii. shopping

Originally, the part of the street festival that involved an actual market, with stalls and booths set up with goods, was aimed primarily at romantic trinkets like flowers or jewelry, gifts intended to be purchased for a loved one. As time has gone by, however, this aspect of the market has increased, with many businesses participating, though the emphasis is still on small businesses and anything relating to local culture rather than booths for any of the larger more corporate businesses.

There is still plenty of jewelry to be found, for sure, mostly handmade and artisan, but the scope of the Market has widened immeasurably. The Sampremi Market is an excellent place to find specialty foods, clothing, jewelry, art, or other goods that were originally native to cultures on other planets in this reality, or other realities altogether. Many residents in the city use the market to share their unique cultural goods and traditional dress with others.

iv. adult

In a side alley of the Sampremi Market on any day, one can find an area roped off with a red silken cord, attended by members of the Perimeter Guard in casual dress who will ID anyone entering to make sure they are 18+. Once characters are permitted entry, they will find all of the adult offerings that the market has to offer.

Since Sampremi is, historically, a celebration of lust and physical love, the adult offerings are all set up to cater to two or more people of any sex or gender configuration. One can find an adult or sexualized version of almost anything that's featured in the main market, from fair games to adult goods to street food laced with actual aphrodisiacs (there are always warnings for food spiked in this way to avoid accidental consumption).

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set at the Sampremi Festival, feel free to write it up!

[Steve's schedule never bothers Bucky much. He has trouble sleeping just a couple beds down from Loki, but it's alright, he can pretty much fall asleep or wake up on command. The sun isn't even up one morning when he hears Steve's footsteps in the communal kitchen, and he pads out in his sweatpants and t-shirt, barefoot and rumpled, to join him for coffee while the rest of the floor sleeps.]

Going for a run this morning?
livingsymbol: ([S] I'd follow you anywhere.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-13 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve looks tired and a little mussed from his early wake up, but it isn't something he hasn't done before. He's already shaking it off, making coffee and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He smiles when Bucky comes in after him.]

Yeah. I figure it's better just to start moving now. Better than just lying in bed and waiting for the day to get here.

[It's a good-natured answer despite how early it is.]

You want to come?
anotheroldsoldier: (sheepish)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-03-14 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Bucky smiles a little at the familiarity. The two of them up earlier than everyone else, getting coffee made in the faintest light of dawn. Back then, though, they'd more often than not still be in their tent in their long johns, boiling coffee in a tin pan over a fire. Still, for the way things have changed, some things stay the same.

He reaches up into the cabinet to pull down two of the bland white mugs, and then to the fridge for cream.]
Do I ever say no to a run? I ain't got the metabolism you do, pal. [He teases Steve, the words coming easily.]

Want breakfast? I can make eggs.
livingsymbol: ([S] I'll buy you a soda later.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-15 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[The teasing earns a light snort from Steve, who quietly bumps his shoulder against Bucky's as he comes over to grab his cup. The still kitchen, empty save for the two of them, feels comfortable and almost homey when he has Bucky there to joke with.]

Maybe we should wait until we get back. Don't want to wake the others up, and when we come in, we can eat together.

[Although Steve thinks it is unlikely many of their floormates will actually stick around for breakfast, it would be a good way to see who is around.]
anotheroldsoldier: (drinking coffee)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-03-21 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
[He bumps his shoulder against Steve's right back, loose and easy in the companionable quiet. Bucky gets the sugar, the cream, fixes himself a cup. Just a dash of both, because it still seems pretty luxurious in this day and age. It's funny that coffee is one of the more difficult things to adjust to in the modern day, but he'd spent most of his early coffee-drinking years having it black and boiled over a campfire or stove.]

You just wanna see me have to make breakfast for the whole floor. [He says dryly, bringing his cup to his lips.] Sure, after we get back.
livingsymbol: ([S] I'd follow you anywhere.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-24 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I want them to have food if they're going to be woken up by it.

[Bucky understands. He understands Steve's feelings better than anyone else, and having him back, for all the things Steve is dealing with, is enough to make it worth it. He's had time to adjust to change and modern times, but there's something that Bucky provides that simply can't be replaced. A connection he had missed for years before he found him again.

Steve pours himself a cup of black coffee and smiles at his friend.]

I'll help you with it. It'll be a good way to cool down afterward.
anotheroldsoldier: (sheepish)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-03-28 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, let's subject the whole floor to our cooking. [Honestly Bucky doesn't think his own cooking is that bad, but it's still very... 40s. Making something out of nothing, and a bit lacking in seasoning. Edible, but he's no gourmet. Back to basics kind of stuff. At least he can fry bacon and eggs, and make pancakes from a box.] That'll make 'em like us.

[He gives him a raised eyebrow grin and takes a sip of his coffee, making a slight face.] Honestly, I kind of miss the coffee that tasted like tar with powdered creamer.
livingsymbol: ([S] Not even a little bit sorry.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-04-04 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It'll give them a good idea of what to expect. Better to give them realistic expectations.

[Although he jokes, Steve enjoys Bucky's breakfasts. There's something homey and familiar in them that makes it comfort food even when Steve isn't the type to think that deeply about comfort. He chuckles as Bucky sips his coffee and looks disappointed.]

It did have its own sort of charm after a while, didn't it? Not good, but you got used to it.

[A lot like their strange fights. They always seem to get bigger, but Steve is glad he ended up in the future when it really comes down to it.]

I miss hardtack.
anotheroldsoldier: (aww for me?)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-05 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
There is no level of realistic expectations these people can have of us. We're a clusterfuck. [He says, with a touch of humor but also honesty - their universe is complicated, and with so many of them on the same floor together, the bystanders will just get dragged into their problems eventually.

He takes another drink of his coffee, because it's not what his tastebuds keep trying to expect, but he's not going to waste it.]
Yeah, you got used to it. I sort of miss the instant stuff, you know, that came in the ration kits? Toro and I used to melt the chocolate candies into it.

[That admission gets a laugh out of him.] That's one thing I don't miss. Hardtack or that dried meat stuff.
livingsymbol: ([S] Coney Island's open.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-04-18 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess we might be a little more complicated than others. Then again, we don't know what the other worlds are like either. Maybe we're the normal ones.

[Steve says that, but he doubts it is true. Their world is definitely the weirdest.]

What's wrong with dried meat? You eat jerky, don't you?

[There's a wink behind the words as Steve teases him.]

The crackers just need a little coffee to soften up. Or stew. [He pauses for effect.] Although if you want to drink liquid char with chocolate in it, I'm sure we can find that too.
anotheroldsoldier: (lol)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-22 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt that. Kid I fought with out beyond the wall is a figure skater. We're the strange ones, Steve. [A lot of worlds seem so normal compared to theirs. Then again, he's sure there are weirder ones too.]

Not if I can help it. [He snorts.] I welcome liquid char with chocolate in it over canned stew with hardtack any day.
livingsymbol: ([S] Plotting devious things.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-04-25 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, when you put it like that. But you're the leader of this strange band, Bucky.

[Just, you know, giving his partner some teasing encouragement.]

That's your loss. But at least we agree on coffee.
anotheroldsoldier: (over beers)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-25 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Like anybody's gonna listen to me when you're here. [He points out, taking another pointed sip of his coffee.] Maybe the kid, but I'm not sure what to think of anybody who starts actin' like a fan of mine. Should I even be Cap here? It doesn't mean anything to most people.
livingsymbol: ([S] Everything the light touches...)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-04-25 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's your team, Bucky. [Steve frowns as he fixes his own mug.] You are Cap here, and they'll listen to you as much as they'd listen to me. If the shield doesn't matter to them, it's not because of the man holding it.

They'll follow you if you lead them.
anotheroldsoldier: (fond face)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-26 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really my team, Steve. My team is the ragtag group I lived in your apartment with for a while. [Luke and Jessica and Clint and Carol and Bobbi and Logan, sometimes Stephen, sometimes others. He'd worked well with them.]

I'm trying. But it's hard, you know. You left some pretty big shoes to fill.
