sampremi celebration

In the days leading up to March 8th, new residents may notice advertising around the city, everywhere from digital screens to paper flyers pasted on blank walls, featuring the name of the spring holiday in celebration of new beginnings, new love, and lust: Sampremi. The advertising mentions that there will be street festivals set up at various locations throughout the week and lists where the market will be set up on each day.

street market

The main draw of the holiday is a roaming street market that features special treats and street food that can only be found during Sampremi, a bustling bargain market with any kind of goods you can think of, and fair games that allow a person to win a prize for that special someone.

i. street food

One of the major draws of the festival is the special street food that can only be obtained this time of year. Almost everything you can buy at the Sampremi Festival is meant to be shared - whether it's one piece of meat on two sticks or desserts baked with a narrow part in the middle for convenient tearing, everything is built in twos. The stalls sell everything from cups of soup, sandwiches, roasted or fried meat, deep-fried vegetables and cakes, dumplings, donuts, bagels, turnovers, and anything else you can think of.

Many of the savory dishes are based on the meat of a particular fowl native to the moon Riverview is situated on that has a taste and texture halfway between chicken and duck, cooked to be spicy (ranging from very mild to throat-burning). Many of the desserts are based around a fruit native to the moon that is spherical, red-orange, and has a light sweet taste that is similar to a combination of mango, pineapple, and strawberry. Both ingredients are considered to be aphrodisiacs. Of course, the foods aren't actually aphrodisiacs and any effect is purely placebo.

ii. fair games

The festival features an entire row of fair games ranging from very high-tech games featuring virtual reality and neon holograms to extremely old-fashioned games with darts and balloons or balls and glasses. The games all have prizes in various shapes and sizes, with the standard stuffed animals, but also with goods and special items donated by any business in the city; ranging from tiny prizes to huge and expensive ones.

Due to the nature of the holiday, many of the stalls are set up to cater to winning a prize for your partner, and due to the nature of the Quarantine, a lot of them involve aiming or other aspects of pretending to fight.

iii. shopping

Originally, the part of the street festival that involved an actual market, with stalls and booths set up with goods, was aimed primarily at romantic trinkets like flowers or jewelry, gifts intended to be purchased for a loved one. As time has gone by, however, this aspect of the market has increased, with many businesses participating, though the emphasis is still on small businesses and anything relating to local culture rather than booths for any of the larger more corporate businesses.

There is still plenty of jewelry to be found, for sure, mostly handmade and artisan, but the scope of the Market has widened immeasurably. The Sampremi Market is an excellent place to find specialty foods, clothing, jewelry, art, or other goods that were originally native to cultures on other planets in this reality, or other realities altogether. Many residents in the city use the market to share their unique cultural goods and traditional dress with others.

iv. adult

In a side alley of the Sampremi Market on any day, one can find an area roped off with a red silken cord, attended by members of the Perimeter Guard in casual dress who will ID anyone entering to make sure they are 18+. Once characters are permitted entry, they will find all of the adult offerings that the market has to offer.

Since Sampremi is, historically, a celebration of lust and physical love, the adult offerings are all set up to cater to two or more people of any sex or gender configuration. One can find an adult or sexualized version of almost anything that's featured in the main market, from fair games to adult goods to street food laced with actual aphrodisiacs (there are always warnings for food spiked in this way to avoid accidental consumption).

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set at the Sampremi Festival, feel free to write it up!

Street Food

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-09 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
*Someone wasn't paying attention to the professor as he asked the question. You see, giant walking landsharks are just... neat. And even for all the things she's run into in her travels it was entirely different from the creatures and automatons she's met in her life. So Chandra might be trying to start a staring contest with his Garchomp.*

Huh- oh, yeah, it's great.

*She's still staring at the Garchomp.*

[While staring might be rude, Garchomp doesn't mind it as she approaches her and growled happily at the stranger. As for Sycamore, it only took him a few seconds to notice that she is staring at his Pokemon.]

I see you're curious about my Garchomp, huh?
firelogic: (Gotta Wear Shades)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-09 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... never seen anything like it. Can it talk?

*It seemed to her it was smarter than most animals, even a little more aware than most goblins. It was imposing but it was imposing like Nissa's elementals, big, dangerous, but not actually scary. She's still too distracted (and Chandra) to realize maybe she should introduce herself. Or look at who she's talking to.*
megabond: (Happy Garchomp)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-09 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Not exactly, but she can understand humans.

[Just then, Garchomp then moves closer, gesturing to pet her. Of course, her trainer also notices what she is doing.]

I think she wants you to pet her. Don't worry, her appearance might be fearsome, but she has a gentle soul to everybody.

[Garchomp then growled in agreement after she heard him.]
firelogic: (Red Eyes Take Warning)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-09 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Cool.

*Chandra could see that the big monster wasn't a dangerous thing, she stroked its snout and smiled. Chandra's hand is impossibly warm for a human.*

I guess only your plane has creatures like her?

*Now she looks over to Sycamore, bright orange eyes and more freckles than one would think is possible.*
megabond: (Surprised/Looking)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-09 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Once she stroked her snout, Garchomp just growled happily as she somehow relaxed over the warm touch of the stranger's hand.

However, Sycamore became confused at the word she just said.]

Plane? As in my world?
firelogic: (Leave my Mark)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-09 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, plane.

*Chandra goes back to giving Garchomp some attention and more snout petting.*

There are a lot of planes, separated from each other by empty nothing space. I've been to a bunch.
megabond: (Default)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-09 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Garchomp is actually a Pokemon, so technically, you're right about her and her species only exist in my world.

[As for Garchomp, she continues to accept her strokes while waiting if she's done.]

But to be honest, I think you might able to meet more Pokemon in Riverview.
firelogic: (He'd be more pleasant if he was on Fire)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-10 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, I'm confused, is it a Garchomp or a Pokemon? The first name seems way better for it.

*Chandra stops with the petting to look at Sycamore.*

There are? They fell into this plane when you did? I guess that fits.
megabond: (Talking While Smiling)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-10 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
You're right about it. In fact, Pokemon is what you can call our animals back in my world. In this case, Garchomp is a Dragon and Ground-type Pokemon. She is also known as the Mach Pokemon.

And yeah, that's what they told me after I got out of the portal as well seeing some of them coming out of it.
firelogic: (We did Good)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-10 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
She isn't like any dragon I've seen before. Maybe it's being Ground?

*Chandra's studying Garchomp a bit, thinking about it.*

Are any of them fire types? I mean, none of my friends would suggest me having a pet. I was given a bird before, a machine bird, and I managed to kill that which was impressive given it wasn't really alive. A live pet isn't really a thing I need, and my roommate might mind if I bring home a pet.

But are there any fire type Pokemon.

*She hopes she said that right. Garchomp had an easier set of sounds for her.*
megabond: (Default)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-10 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
You could say that. Garchomp usually lived in caves and are seldom to leave there.

[Kill a machine bird? He just hoped that she wasn't talking about Skarmory or any similar Pokemon.]

Why, of course. There are many types of Fire-types back home. Not only that, there are also Grass, Water, Electric... And that's only a few types I can name.
firelogic: (Gotta Wear Shades)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-10 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, those other types don't matter to me. I really understand fire.

*She glances over to Garchomp and grimaces.*

No offense, but I think if my friend were here she'd like you! Ground is her thing.

*And back to the professor.*

...I forgot to tell you my name, didn't I?
megabond: (Content)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-10 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Garchomp happily growls at Chandra, who is somehow grateful at her words about her.]

That's okay. I didn't introduce myself properly as well. My name is Augustine Sycamore, but you can call me Professor Sycamore.
firelogic: (Gotta Wear Shades)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-10 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
*Chandra frowns a little at that introduction. It feels very much like the sort of introduction Consul Baan would have made. So stuffy and rule abiding. The sort of thing that makes Chandra's neck itch.*

Okay Prof, I'm Abbot Chandra Nalaar. But you can call me Chandra. Everyone does.

*Well, those that aren't yelling curses at her and calling her monster anyway.*
megabond: (Default)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-10 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, Chandra. Nice to meet you as well.

[At least he meets another resident in person unlike the one in the network.]

Back to the subject at hand, you said you're interested in Fire-type Pokemon, correct?
firelogic: (Burning Down the House)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-10 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, if anything would really fit me it'd be a fire-type.

*Chandra smirked, oh also her hair turned into fire. That's probably the more dangerous of the two. But the smirk is pretty dangerous on its own.*

Just seems like the right idea.

*She normally wouldn't show off this much, but she figured the grounddragon was enough of a draw she didn't have to worry.*
megabond: (WTF/Confused)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-10 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[As he sees her hair literally on fire, Sycamore's only reaction is complete shock and disbelief. Unfortunately, she is unaware that he hasn't seen any human do that before.]

Are you aware that you're on fire?
firelogic: (Hi fives!)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-10 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
*Technically her hair is fire, the strands vanish into just a general fire on her head, like a candle with her head the wick.*

Um, yeah, that's why I think fire types would like me. I'm a pyromancer, I'm really good at fire stuff, ever since I was a kid.

*She's not sure what part of this is confusing, which confuses her. She said fire was her thing, wasn't this obvious? Her hair returns to normal, falling around her head with a quick finger combing to keep it from her eyes.*
megabond: (Tired)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-10 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Pyro...mancer?

[His Garchomp is also confused at her abilities as well, not to mention little impressed that she can use what she thought to be a Fire-type attack. Sycamore, on the other hand, looked lost at the sight of her abilities.]

I'm sorry, but what does your world look like anyway?
firelogic: (We did Good)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-10 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
*She's not the one to be explaining things, this is why she is the last person you want to have as the head of an order of monks. And yet she is one, so here she goes.*

I use fire magic? I thought the whole 'head on fire' thing was a good way to summarize it?

*Now, she thinks about how to answer that, cause that's a loaded question. She decides to skip multiplanar issues and go to the world she calls home now.*

Um, the monastery is on the side of a volcano, the whole order is made up of people gifted at fire magic. They took me in when I was twelve, helped me get good at not burning everything down. Not unless I really needed to!

*Which happened more than she liked!*
megabond: (Thinking)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-10 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Fire magic? So you're like a wizard from the novels back in my world?

[As for where she came from, she was surprised to hear about her origins, which he can guess about more of her explanation.]

I see. So you're trained under those people to control your powers, correct?
firelogic: (Red Eyes Take Warning)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
What, no! Wizards learn stuff from books. Turning general magic ability into a specific set of skills. I've always had fire, and I hone it through practice and intuition.

*From world after world of magic users, the distinctions between wizards, shamans, and artificers are specifc and not to be trifled with.*

Something like that. They taught me to make my fire bigger, and to keep it from destroying things that didn't need destroying.
megabond: (Thinking)

[personal profile] megabond 2017-03-10 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[So she's didn't learn her powers through books? Now he is confused...]

Okay... So if you're not a wizard, then what are you?

And I see... So you were formerly unable to control your powers...

[Uh oh...]
firelogic: (Leave my Mark)

[personal profile] firelogic 2017-03-12 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Jace said Shaman is the word for what I am. I dunno, it's not really what I worry about.

I make fire, that's just a part of who I am. That's what counts.
