everything's on fire
who: Everyone!
what: The residential building is on fire
when: ~2am, August 23rd
where: The Residential building
warnings: Fire, destruction of property, injury, general warnings for crisis situations

It's a reasonably quiet night, pleasantly dry with a slight breeze. Almost nice, for those that enjoy the hours after midnight long before dawn starts to creep on the horizon. Right until it isn't, when the air changes, and there's the scent of heat that promises smoke. In most places it starts with a flash of blue light that arcs from floor to floor as energy pulses through the building, and there's a crack of sound that follows. The power dies for a moment, and if you're one of the unlucky ones, the light that follows is a literal spark in the dark, burning to life in bright orange-red, yielding heat and smoke and trouble. The energy surge doesn't just hit the lights, but sparked flames that burst to life, and they catch quickly, spreading.
The worst of it starts on the ninth floor, where the smoke and the beginning of heat starts moments before the surge. The fire spreads faster there, people starting to startle awake and realize what's happening as the flames crackle. Eventually there's an announcement on the Network, both alerting people to what's happening and trying to organize both those that are willing to help and those that need it.
Some areas are untouched, while others are ravaged badly, reduced to ashes and crumbling ceilings, so watch your step. There's chaos, but through it there's people doing what they can to help each other, and the official fire services show up to help control the blaze. After that, it's just a matter of repairing the damage that's been done, rebuilding and putting things back together, seeing what's been lost and what was saved.
Even later, people start putting the pieces together, and there's the official investigation into what might have caused a fire like that in the first place.
[ooc: As promised, the residential building is on fire! OOC plotting post is here if anyone wants to work out some last minute plans before diving in. Plotting post also includes the relevant details. Elsewise, just top level and mingle. Try not to get burned too badly. :) Good luck!]

He has very little belongings, grabbing what he can before he leaves his room and starts making his way downstairs. He's not the only one, and he stops now and then along the way to usher someone along, to help them organize themselves.
He gets about halfway down when he sees a familiar flash coming up and does a double take before quickly slithering between the evacuees towards Jyn. He catches her arm and stops her, pulling her towards him hard enough that he accidentally yanks her into his chest.
"Why are you going up?"
no subject
"You." Which is said as if he'd asked the dumbest question imaginable, like it's followed by an unspoken "you idiot". Was she just supposed to leave him up there if he didn't have the ability to make his way down the stairs on his own? No, of course not.
Although clearly he didn't need the help. Even if he smells like lingering smoke, he looks unharmed. "I was coming to find you."
no subject
"Well, you found me." Right, okay, he finally lets go of her, even if he doesn't back up out of her space. "It didn't hit my room, yet, I'm fine. I think it started up higher."
He steps down, hand brushing at her back in a gesture for her to follow. "Let's go. You're not hurt, are you?"
no subject
They're the same height now, with him down a step and Jyn takes a moment to think about how odd it is to see Cassian from this straight on lack of angle. A moment later the pressure on her back reminds her to move and she jerks to follow him.
"Fire's not near me at all, didn't even know it was a fire until I got to the stairs." And then she was racing up them for Cassian without thinking about it, honestly until he'd stopped her. Then she'd given it some thought but she stood behind her decision.
He's all she has from home and she already died in his arms, she's not ready to just let him die if she could have done something.
no subject
"I smelled the smoke. The lights started soon after." He keeps looking back at her, making sure she's still with him, like he's afraid she's going to disappear into the crowd or the smoke. He's chased after her so often that it's starting to feel natural. It's a relief to have found her. Dryly: "Good thing we didn't get our extra pillows yet."
no subject
There is neither a need nor an inclination though, so she could concede that point. She won't.
The lights flicker briefly and Jyn feels her stomach dip when she sees Cassian in the dim light, reaching out for his sleeve as the lights stutter back on, breathing out a shaky breath. This could all have been better timed to give them more time to recover but alas.
no subject
Cassian feels that same dip when the lights flicker, awkwardly combined with the burning smell in the air. The only thing missing is salty ocean. He tenses, until Jyn grabs his sleeve, and he looks at her right before the lights come on, grateful to see her face lit. The chances of separation on the stairs are very slim, but he suddenly and very desperately doesn't want to lose her in this evacuation, so he pries her fingers off his sleeve - but only so he can take her hand. It's easier, clearly, it keeps them together between all the other people weaving in and out. He just won't say anything about it. It's not like being on Jedha was much different.
no subject
Briefly, she meets his eyes, steady, and nods.
"It isn't like I have anything to lose." RIP fluffy rug if the fire does get that far, but honestly, as far are Jyn is concerned the only thing she has to lose is holding her hand as they wind their way down the stairs.
no subject
"I suppose there's always a replacement rug." More jokes. Best way forward. "There's nothing of importance left in mine either."
Jyn is important, but she's not in his room, a fact he is assured of as steers them down, grateful for the constant reminder of her presence via their hands. At least both his legs are functioning this time.
no subject
"Because you haven't got a fancy rug," Jyn reasons, for his lack of Stuff. They banter about their respective rugs for the rest of the stairs, making quick work since no one needs help since they'd both been stopping on their way to find each other. Jyn passes him only to shove the door open and burst into the cool night air, pulling Cassian away from the building only so she can turn and look up at it. She keeps hold of his hand.
From the outside it doesn't look that bad, she supposes, aside from the smoke billowing out of open or broken windows. "Maybe it's not as big as we thought."
no subject
Cassian stares up at the smoke, squinting and frowning. "It looks more controlled than it seemed inside. Smoke damage can be just as bad, for the people moreso, but the evacuation happened quickly. Small can still be dangerous - but I don't think it will spread through the whole building."
no subject
"You can stay with me tonight. We can air out your room tomorrow and see what's to be done about it." And if the fire has spread down that far, well, they're fucked and will both have to find some place else to sleep but that is a problem for later.
no subject
His eyes shift from the fire to her face, both surprised and not. He wants to ask if she's sure, but she wouldn't have offered otherwise. Besides, they slept in the same ship, the room is definitely not much different. "Okay." There, simple agreement. "I imagine any damage will be repaired quickly enough, given how accommodating they are here."
no subject
Maybe not Melshi. Or maybe just to see his face.
The pressure in her chest shifts to grief and she once again shoves it down and away, packing it carefully into the little boxes stacked neatly in the back of her mind, waiting for one wrong move to set the whole mess of them tumbling down. It's not happening now, she refuses to grieve now.
"Making new pillows as we speak."
no subject
"Flame resistant this time." He squeezes her hand on some instinct, a reaction to the weird wave of tension he can feel in her beside him. He breathes in deeply, like he's clearing his lungs, and the scratchiness of his throat catches up to him. "Maybe we can find some water."
no subject
Water.
"Right," she agrees, nodding again. "Yeah, come on." They might have to go into town to get water but. Being away from the building is probably good for them anyway.
no subject
They meander close enough to help stragglers if needed, finding a shop giving out free water bottles to the people fleeing the fire. He only lets go of her hand a few times as the occasion demands, but he always tentatively seeks her fingers out again. Maybe if they just don't bring it up, he doesn't have to let her go!
Eventually the fire is settled and building declared safe to start letting people back inside. They try his room first, but the walls are a little singed and the air too smoky, so they head down towards Jyn's. Part of him wants to ask again if it's okay, but she'd immediately declared his room unfit with a wrinkle of her nose and dragged him out of it, so Cassian is pretty much 100% sure she's fine.
And he's still holding her hand. "Key?"
no subject
Once inside she does close and lock the door behind them, however, she has no desire for anyone to just walk into her room, even if she has no material possessions to speak of.
The door clicking closed seems to rid her of some unnamed tension and she lets go of Cassian's hand to drag both her hands down her face, slumping in her desk chair. She's still so tired. When will she not be tired. "I had sort of expected whatever sort of afterlife this is to be less eventful."
no subject
She shuts the door, and it feels like they're being sealed off in a way. There's also no more reason to hold her hand, so he doesn't chase after it like he almost wants to when she finally lets him go. He stands awkwardly in the middle of the room when she sits down, not quite sure the least invasive spot for him to take.
He could probably do without the reminder of death though. He nearly says it could be worse, but catches himself because they pretty much already had the worst. Instead, dryly: "Maybe that just means we'll never be bored."
Which is kind of okay, because Cassian doesn't know how to be bored.
no subject
"I didn't realize Alliance spies got bored." Her eyebrows lift with a half shrug. They aren't exactly alike, but she doubts he'll deal with boredom any better than she will. He'll just be better at hiding it.
Imagine, free time being oppressive.
no subject
Even when he had long bouts of downtime, Cassian always found it hard to do nothing. Reading old reports was a good way to mitigate the feeling, but that's not exactly an option here. And there's been a lot of downtime. It's an odd thing to admit it aloud, but he's already realized he behaves oddly around Jyn more often than not.
no subject
"You had to have it, there have to be rules." The Alliance was still fighting a gentleman's war on the surface, ignoring what Intelligence did in the shadows. Mon Mothma had too much idealism to work her soldiers until they crumpled, exhausted.
Jyn knows the exhaustion was emotional more than anything, she doesn't forget Cassian's speech cementing himself and his men to Rogue One's cause.
no subject
"I had time off." It's not quite defensive of the Rebellion, but it's close. He knows he was overworked and overtired and maybe also kind of fucked over by said work, but it's not like he hadn't thrown himself headfirst more than he should have too. It was probably not enough time off, but it did exist!
"I read. Sometimes just old reports, but sometimes books and stories on the datapads. I don't like to sit still."
no subject
"When I was with Saw I gave myself an education, he had a datapad and I taught myself what my mother would have taught me." Basically, history is for chumps and english classes are garbage, but she's got math and science and tactics down to, well, down to a science. Government, too, she supposes. "I used to watch the last of the Senate hearings."
no subject
He's pleasantly surprised when she starts talking about Saw. Cassian is finding he likes to hear anything she has to say about herself, all the little pieces she keeps sharing with him.
"I have seen them as well, but not until I was with the Alliance. I did have to teach myself a lot of things before then too. The hearings used to make me so mad. When I was younger, I couldn't understand why no one tried to do more to stop it."
