river festival

In the days leading up to August 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: The River Festival. This holiday is in celebration of the river and the life that it gives to the city, as well as the heat of summer and forming bonds with friends, family, and romantic partners. The celebrations are marked by a community-wide cleanup of the docks and beaches along the river - particularly important considering the recent acid rain - as well as beachfront cookouts and parties (both private and city sponsored) and beach sports tournaments happening on either open stretches of beach or in special clothing-optional beaches, all capped off with fireworks displays on the evenings of August 7th and 14th.

a celebration of the river and togetherness

Following the hedonism of Carnivale, it's time for something a little more low-key and relaxing. The River Festival happens every year in August, and is geared toward community building through cleaning up the beaches and docks along the river and then using all that freshly cleaned beach to gather on. During the first week of August, there are various lightly-themed government-sponsored beach cookouts and parties geared toward family, romantic dates, or casual all-ages get-togethers for meeting new friends; there are also a few more racy parties at clothing-optional beaches around the city. Many private residents also take this time to gather together friends and family, and have cookouts on the beach with all the typical trappings of the beach barbecue. There are also various casual sports tournaments sponsored by community centers, gyms, and sports teams in the city, featuring prizes ranging from notoriety to sports equipment to big bucks. Finally, there are two fireworks displays, one on August 7th and one on August 14th, with free food, and various live performers beforehand.

i. cleaning up

The holiday starts off on a note that is just a bit more sombre than the rest of the season, with the cleanup efforts following late July's strange fog and acid rain blending into the usual tradition of cleaning up beaches and docks along the river. The cleanup is a group effort, with every citizen who is physically able pitching in to comb the beaches, where they pick up fallen tree limbs, garbage, and anything else that's accumulated during the winter and spring, and then raking the beaches to make them clean and ready to use. The cleanup of the docks is similar, with residents sweeping and hosing them down where necessary. This year, there are a lot of repairs to be made to beachfront structures that might've been damaged by the acid rain, so if anyone has some carpentry or building skills, those would definitely come in handy.

This is meant to be a community building effort, so many businesses in the area, more well-to-do private citizens, and the government have pitched in funding to provide lunches, cold drinks, coffee or tea, and snacks to anyone who's helping out with the cleanup efforts. All in all, the cleanup has a very friendly, welcoming vibe.

ii. cookouts and parties

The main traditions of the River Festival involve cookouts and beach parties. On August 7th and August 14th, the government as well as various corporations and businesses in the city, will be providing funds for large beach gatherings. On these days, there will be booths set up offering wares and freebies from various businesses around the city that have helped fund the party, large swaths of cleared beach where residents can don a swimsuit and catch some rays or swim in the river, massive barbecue setups to provide partygoers with all the standard barbecue fare, beach sports tournaments, dancing and musical performances, and fireworks displays (see prompts below).

The holiday isn't just about these big parties, though - many residents arrange their own barbecues, cookouts, beach camping trips, beach bonfires, and other riverside gatherings and outings. Many riverfront businesses offer discounts on services such as canoe or kayak rentals to go out paddling on the river, jetski or motorboat rentals for tubing, wakeboarding, or waterskiing, or mounts to take romantic rides in the surf. Additionally, there is an adults-only section of the beach where any of these activities can be done in the nude in a clothing-optional setting, including the big city-sponsored parties.

iii. sportsball tournaments

Is your character good at playing a particular sport that could, conceivably, be played on a beach? Chances are that during the month of August, a tournament will be set up for them to participate in. The tournaments are pretty standard, generally sponsored by community centers, sports clubs and teams, gyms, and other organizations and businesses in the city, with various levels of specialization, and levels of skill or competitiveness. The prizes also vary, with everything from plain old bragging rights to sports equipment or passes to gyms and community centers, to large lump sums of cash money. Definitely worth it, for characters with a love for sport.

Oh, and a lot of these tournaments are happening on the adults-only clothing-optional beaches, for those grown-up sports fans who like a bit of an extra challenge.

iv. performances and fireworks

On August 7th and August 14th at the end of the large city-sponsored beach parties, there will be evening performances all along the beach. Not as extensive as the musical performances during Carnivale, there are two large-name performers per night, with various lesser-known groups performing at random off and on throughout the day and night. Areas of the beach are cleared for residents to watch and dance to the music, both on the regular and adults-only clothing-optional beaches (acts will switch off between the two areas so both areas get both performances).

Player-characters who are musical artists, DJs, or otherwise perform are free to set up shop around this party and panhandle or put on free performances for publicity.

After the sun goes down, boats will head out into the water carrying a variety of fireworks, and there will be a beautiful display of exploding color in the sky for residents to watch and enjoy. The fireworks are highly advanced, incorporating old-fashioned gunpowder as well as modern technology that result in really beautiful displays that can take the breath away!

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to meet new roommates, for the purpose of getting to know each other, or hit up one of the mod-posted prompts for each Communal Floor. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during the River Festival, feel free to write it up!

Edward Elric | OTA | Willing to match format

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-08-02 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Please check out Ed's CRAU info & permissions post, especially if you're canon familiar - as this Ed might be different from expectations and certainly does not appear as he would in canon. (Most importantly, he's taller, has longer hair and happens to be 21-years-old so he's also a bit quieter overall.) He's also out on the beach fully clothed in his usual outfit, black leather pants, black jacket over a black vest and white gloves. Feel free to notice he's not appropriately dressed for the beach.]

i. cleaning up:

When Yuffie had made a point of dragging him to yet another event, Ed was not entirely pleased. Although he hadn't argued that she was due at least two more dates (why argue? She wasn't going to listen anyway) he was hardly interested in some beach party. Sand and water were not really the greatest thing for automail, and since he couldn't swim it certainly limited his ability to enjoy things. At least there would be free food.

Of course, once they arrived it was Ed that was in his element. More than happy to move around the beaches and help clean up where alchemy could be used to offer assistance. He made quick work of clearing debris, sweeping and hosing things down. His real talents would shine when he helped repair some of the buildings - clapping his hands together with the crackle of electric blue light as anything he touched after seemed to fix itself under his fingertips. To some this might be a chore, something that had to be done in order to earn the enjoyment later, but for Ed this alone made attending worth it. He could spend the entire time focused on this if someone didn't drag him away to do something else, repairing and creating things was what he did best.

ii. cookouts and parties / iv. performances:

Between Ed's obvious discomfort with the large crowd and the additional bodies that could be found in the river, it wasn't long before he would find himself tailed by the same familiar creature as usual. Simply being near the river was enough to bring it out sometimes, but with all of the excessive commotion the Milotic wasn't going to sit idly by when it could tag along after the person it arrived here with. It wasn't often Ed arrived at the beach, so the Pokemon spent a great deal of time in the wild without much human interaction.

For his part, Edward seemed oblivious to the Pokemon's existence, ignoring or outright avoiding it. However, if someone was aware of them long enough, or at just the right moment, they might catch him interacting with the water snake. Sometimes speaking to it, offering food or even leaning against it if no one seemed to be paying attention.

[Ed is also available at the party, cookout and performances without the Milotic if you'd prefer to tag him alone - just let me know, tags can come in before it shows up!]

iv. fireworks:

He'd agreed to attend the fireworks with Yuffie so chances are he could be found with her during the evening. In particular settled somewhere comfortable with a good view, resting against the Milotic once more as if it were a living couch to watch the festivities from. Knowing Yuffie she'd run off at random to grab more food or stick her nose into someone else's business, so anyone is free to happen upon Ed alone while he's waiting for her return. Fireworks at a festival was not an alien concept for the Elrics, but it wasn't a pleasant one either, and he made an effort to simply enjoy the set up without letting his mind wander to events that were ten years ago now, long done and over with.

v. wildcard:

[Throw something else at him, I'm flexible! Add me or hit me up on plurk to discuss if you'd like: [plurk.com profile] TransmutedSelf. If a character might pry about Ed's sulky mood at the fireworks, please be warned his canon does deal with murder and this may come up. Let me know if you have any questions or want something else!]

vi. Floor six:

[Prompt for floor six, or if you want me to tag you in the mingle thread, let me know on plurk! I'm open to options!]

[ it's been a long time since al's seen fireworks for his brother, even if they weren't an altogether strange thing for the elrics. and with yuffie off getting food or something, al took the chance to snuggle up to his brother, drawing close so they could watch the bloom of lights in the sky. it's comfortable, relaxing even after the hectic-ness that had been the raid on the temple, and al enjoyed it thoroughly. with an ice cream cone in hand, he's settled next to ed, leaning over to offer some to his brother. ]

This is nice, isn't it? It's been a while since we've done something like this.

[ the day has been long but nice. spending time on the beach was something the elrics did a lot as small children, but in recent years, it had been all but impossible given neither could swim like they used to. there's a little bit of a sunburn coloring the bridge of al's nose, but it doesn't bother him in the least because he's too content and happy just being in his brother's presence after enjoying a long day. ]
alchemyfreak: (fma034_lavaliere)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-08-02 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[After being on the go since he first arrived here, this was a nice change of pace. Not over the top, no dancing, and nothing dangerous, just quiet. It doesn't remind him of nights out on the roof watching the sky with Wrath until Al offered the ice cream. Ed smiled, shaking his head some, gaze still lifted to the display above them.]

You eat it...

[He had to laugh at his brother's words, nudging a shoulder to his in response.]

It is, and if the last few months are a sign there'll be plenty more like this coming. It's nice to be able to slow down and take a break for awhile... This place doesn't really give you an option with how big and frequent these things are.

[Ed grinned, clearly enjoying himself - unlike the masq, he made no pretenses over whether or not he was having fun.]

I'm glad I get to share it with you, Al.
alkahestic: (living in your precious memory)

[personal profile] alkahestic 2017-08-03 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[ the nudge makes him sway a little, but it's a comforting sensation, one he rolls with as he gives his ice cream little kitten licks. he wants to enjoy this moment with ed, with the ice cream, maybe even see it stretch out for eternity. it reminds him of quiet nights studying by candle light, reading their father's books, and recovering from fights. he releases a low hum and gazes at ed with undisguised affection.

the lights of the fireworks glint off ed's luminescent eyes and make his hair gleam. it's breathtaking sight and before al can stop himself, he reaches out to trail his fingers along his brother's jaw. ]

Me too, Brother. It doesn't matter to me what comes. We have this moment together.
alchemyfreak: (fma033_lavaliere)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-08-03 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[His gaze lowers at the touch, glancing at Al curiously. The lost memories from the effects over the city meant he wasn't so resistant to touching his brother, not when the flashbacks of killing him didn't surface every time he even thought of it - but he didn't forget everything. He knew that this version of his brother was more touchy than the others, he had to wonder briefly if it was because he was younger - not by very much, but enough that he hadn't really spent any time with Ed before arriving here. The others had been to Germany, they lived together before Al arrived in Purg.

Either way he tried not to dwell on it, it didn't seem like a detail worth investing too much thought in. Al was Al and he wasn't about to start reading too much into his every action. As long as he was there, and happy to be there, Ed was just as glad.

At the other's words he shoves the thought aside that despite them, Ed knew that Al wanted to go home. Return to a world with the brother he left behind there, and sometimes Ed wondered if he could ever really be sure that was his own future and not some alternate reality he'd never have. Abandoning his brother for some alien world was such a difficult concept for him to grasp, he almost didn't believe it could be something he'd do.

He shifted, leaning against Al some with a content sigh, determined to just enjoy things for a change and take whatever else as it came with a faint smile.]

We do have that... and anything that does, we'll get through it together. Like we always do.
alkahestic: (you found me,you found me)

[personal profile] alkahestic 2017-08-07 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ if it's strange for him to be so affectionate, al didn't notice. it seemed normal, even fine to scoot close to his brother and bask in his presence. to reach out and trail his fingers along a firm jaw or along the nape of ed's neck. his fingers linger there a moment, recalling how ed had bound his soul to that armor, at approximately the same spot, and al can't help but wish that he had some mark to acknowledge the sacrifice his brother made to resurrect him fully.

but he had no regrets. not now, not after everything. this might not be the same brother he intended to find in the gate, but it was still ed, and al craved every small bit of affection he could steal from his brother. it didn't quite make up for the four years being unable to feel or touch, but it helped a lot. ]

Mm, like we always do. I'm glad to be here with you, Brother. I missed you a lot, even when I couldn't remember everything. I wanted so much to be able to see you again. To hug you. To know what it was like to feel the warmth of your skin. Remember, that? I can finally feel you.

iv. Fireworks~

[personal profile] thegreatninja 2017-08-05 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yuffie was a little annoyed that Ed had left the masquerade early though she knew that he didn't take her annoyance seriously. Even so, she had managed to drag him to the festival and eventually the fireworks. It had been a lot of fun and a lot like the festivals that Wutai used to throw. It was the one part of their culture that ShinRa couldn't erase, even after their occupation of the her nation.

She was wearing a dark blue kimono, smiling up at the sky as the explosions peeked and flowered in a haze of fiery light. There was something magical in fireworks. It reminder her of when she was younger and the idea of bring a princess had been more idealistic than it was no.

Her dark purple eyes turned towards Ed while her fingers absently picked at a ball of cotton candy that was resting in her lap. "This wasn't so bad. Was it?" She pinched a bit of pink sugary fluff and held it close to Ed's lips. "Here. Try some. It's not dessert."

Ed was well versed in girls being annoyed with him, it wasn't so much that he didn't take her seriously as that- well, upsetting girls was kind of an inevitable part of his life by this point. There just wasn't any sense overreacting to it, anymore. Although he'd initially been reluctant to get involved in yet another party so soon after the last one - and he still hadn't fully recovered from Carnivale, even before the masquerade - arriving had changed things. Food and being able to throw himself into some actual work on the beach made for a much more pleasant Elric overall during the week of the festival, and by the time the fireworks come on the 14th he'd completely forgotten a number of things that made him less fun to be around, thanks to the effects of the amnesia.

As much as Yuffie is watching the fireworks, Ed was watching her - out of the corner of his eye. He'd never really been too impressed by the displays as a kid, and certain events sure soured the whole experience, but here he didn't have to worry about any of that. For a change he got to sit back and enjoy something, and that alone was a new experience. He was probably smiling more that night than she'd ever seen since the day they had met.

When he turned to answer her question he found a hand extended out to his face with some cotton candy presented for him to take. Which only caused him to immediately forget what he was going to say as a sudden blush stained his features. That's certainly not how cotton candy eating had gone with Chloe, and he's admittedly confused for a second - but at the last part he smirked, taking the offered bite and letting it dissolve in his mouth with a shrug. "I know."

He shifted to rest an arm on one upturned knee, gaze shifting back to the sky before speaking again. "You like dressing up for this stuff, don't you?" Ed was dressed as usual, he didn't do bathing suits or summer attire, and if these clothes worked in the desert they sure as hell could work here for a few hours at the beach. As for her question, he hummed thoughtfully, head tilting slightly as if seriously considering his response. "I think this is more my style than that dance."
thegreatninja: (Very cute)

(*^.^*)

[personal profile] thegreatninja 2017-08-07 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yuffie laughed softly, enjoying the banter about the cotton candy as it slowly became something of an inside joke. She generally preferred savory over sweet things but she really liked cotton candy. There were memories that were associated with the sugary spun goodness that other sweets didn't have and eating it now brought back all of the joy she had felt back then.

She has noticed that he's smiling more though she doesn't think it's because of anything that she's done. As boastful as Yuffie was, she was good at seeing people for who they are and the subtle reactions behind each action. It was what made her a good ninja though she never let on how much she really noticed. It always felt that it was better that way though it also meant that it kept most people at a distance.

"I do but this was special." She wasn't going to elaborate at what this was but she was talking about the festival as a whole. "And me too. I love festivals like this." Her voice softened and for the first time there was an earnest sort of pure love in Yuffie's voice for festivals. "This is more like how we celebrate at home." She had dressed up to make this place feel a little bit like Wutai. As comfortable as she was away from home, she still missed it. It was her country after all.

"What's your favorite part of the festival? Not fireworks?" She asked, noticing that he wasn't really looking at the bright explosion of flowers that lit up the night sky.
alchemyfreak: (FMA_CoS_10)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-08-07 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Didn't peg you for the cotton candy type." She had said she preferred savory, and he hadn't forgotten that. He obviously isn't aware of her past associations with it, but he's watching her carefully as if awaiting an explanation.

Just the fact that this sort of thing was something Ed was more comfortable with made it easier for him to let loose a little, nothing dangerous going on, nothing embarrassing or awkward to struggle with. As long as no one tried to get him to swim on those beaches, this was a perfectly enjoyable time for him. The calming effect of the festival alone was different from the fireworks though, if anything he seemed even happier now than he did keeping himself busy on the beach. Anyone particularly close to them would probably also notice that he appeared more at ease around his brother - where before despite their closeness, there had always been an edge of wariness there.

He fell silent as she spoke of the festival and home, there weren't a lot of extremely happy memories he had from back home, but he could recognize that sense of nostalgia. She didn't seem to be mourning her home though, more that she was appreciating the small sense of home she got to experience through this event.

"Honestly," His voice is soft when he answers, watching her as if expecting that she wasn't going to appreciate this answer. "Helping people. There was a lot of clean up and repairs to do... and some people trying to cook who clearly couldn't-" At that point he hid a grin, remembering the burnt food on the grill until he intervened.

"I like helping people, that's what alchemists are supposed to do."
thegreatninja: (Yeah)

[personal profile] thegreatninja 2017-08-07 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"You really want to know?" She looks over at him before turning to direct her gaze up towards the sky. "When I was really little. Towards the end of the Wutai War. My mom used to give me cotton candy at things like this." Her dad hated it because he wanted to teach his spastic daughter about discipline. Even back then there had been a rift between Yuffie and her father. After her mother died they never saw eye to eye. She stopped attending lessons and eventually she ran away from home to try and safe Wutai her own way.

She's sorta made up with her father but the rise of Geostigma had torn open the rift in their relationship for a second time and Yuffie had left to go help Reeve in The World Regeneration Organization. At least there people were happy for Yuffies efforts, unlike her dad.

Yuffie shrugged a bit but kept her eyes on the fireworks. She didn't actually talk about her family that often though she'd sometimes boast about being the princess of Wutai. "I get it. Believe it or not. Like helping people. Sorta what I was doing before I came here."

Describing the state of Gaia was a very long story that Yuffie really didn't want to get into. "So hey, you and Al. You're both Alchemist?" Al had offered to teach Yuffie how to do it too though she's currently having trouble focusing. "How does that work exactly? Like is it like magic or something else? I know its science but how's it fit where you're from? I figured if everyone could do it then that'd be super convenient."

[ At first, it's the sound of electricity crackling that catches Cisco's attention. For a second he nearly has a heart attack - they all knew that the storm had damaged the city's power grid, but what if there is a live wire, still, close by? What if one of the volunteers touches it, not knowing the danger. He quickly abandons the branch he'd been picking up, examining the area for the source of the sound.

Just as he's starting to frown at the clear lack of any downed wires, Cisco hears it again. This time, he looks over quickly enough to see Ed, hands clasped together. He watches, first in confusion, and then in fascination, as the kid touches the large crack in a nearby stone wall, which glows for a moment before... disappearing. Entirely. Which is impossible.

Fortunately for Cisco, the impossible is just a Tuesday, for him.

He goes back to picking up debris, but uses it as a cover to subtly get a bit closer to the guy who is doing the repairs. Cisco watches him repeat the process a few more times, and there are no tools, not actual mending being done. Just a clap, the sound of electricity, a brief glow as he sets his hands against the damaged surface, and then boom. And Cisco's curiosity overcomes all else. ]

Hell of an ability you got there.

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-08-07 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
[Luckily for Cisco Ed is too absorbed in his own work to notice him as he gets closer. There's a faint smirk on his features, as if he's clearly enjoying this, repairs was what he did best after all.

So focused on what he was doing, he doesn't realize he has company until Cisco speaks up, and immediately he glances up at the words before offering a grin some might call cocky.]

It comes in handy. Repair work is sort of my thing.

[At least it had become his thing with little other direction to go in the last few years.]

[ He's glad that the kid is smiling, and willing to talk, because he's really curious, but would actually draw the line at harassing a kid who was just minding his own business, trying to rebuild the city and do his part. But since Ed doesn't seem to mind talking about it, Cisco goes on: ]

Pretty good thing to have as your thing.

[ ...wow, Cisco, way to make a good first impression, there. He tucks his hair back behind his ears, laughing a touch self-consciously. ]

That sentence sounded better in my head before I said it. What I meant is, fixing stuff is a useful skill.

[ Somehow, he has the gnawing suspicion that he's just making it worse. Cisco moves on quickly, asking: ]

How's it work, anyway? You have some kind of nanotech you're manipulating, or is it magic, or a superpower, or what?
alchemyfreak: (FMA_CoS_10)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-08-07 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It works for me.

[He's still grinning, pausing to place his hands on his hips and glance over the last thing he'd fixed. If he's at all bothered by Cisco stumbling over his words he makes no indication - he doesn't seem to notice, honestly.]

It is. Alchemy's useful for all sorts of things, though. This is pretty basic stuff.

[At the last question though Ed pauses, there's a wary sort of flicker over his expression as if the other had overstepped with that line of questioning, but it's gone as quickly as it shadowed his features. A smaller, almost rueful, smile replaces the grin before he answers softly. Four years and the word 'magic' still put him at unease, even if he was less prone to admit it now.]

It's a science. Even on my world not everyone understands it, really... Only an alchemist can perform transmutations, you just need the knowledge and proper materials.

Alchemy, huh?

[ If Cisco notices that temporary wariness, he gives no indication of it; he's pretty used to people having mixed or even bad reactions to his curiosity. He's a nosy guy, and he knows that. But one of the reasons for that is that he's a scientist, always wanting to understand how things work, to expand his knowledge. Which has been rather a delightful challenge, since arriving in this place, where there are all kinds of science he's never seen before, and magic on top.

When Ed calls it a science, though, Cisco's expression lights up. ]

So you're an alchemist. That something people are born to be, or did you go to school for it?

[ What he's curious about here is whether the ability is hereditary, or whether it's just a learned skill. ]

Alchemy was a term people used for really early science, in my world. Like hundreds and hundreds of years in the past. Never let people do that, though.

[Ivar was not one much either for the beach or parties in general. Large bodies of water were his biggest fear, so he was well staying away from it. At this particular gathering, he didn't see too many people he knew. He was naturally a little quiet. It had been a hard couple of days, between Letha's last days of pregnancy, and the intense fight he'd had with Dodger.

He was hanging on the outskirts when he noticed the sight of Ed feeding the Milotic. The sight of the colorful creature perked Ivar's interest. He drew near to the pair, surprisingly quiet for someone in a wheelchair.]

What is that? [The words rolled off in a Norwegian accent. Ivar's eyes were curiously blue, not only just the icy shade of the irises, but the sclera was blue instead of being while as well.]
alchemyfreak: (fma25)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-08-11 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Ed generally caught on when he wasn't alone, but the crowds of the beach had dimmed his hyper-awareness to something more typical. Besides, if anything too dangerous approached he wouldn't need to be aware, he'd be informed, and he knew it.

His hand paused in mid-air at the sound of a voice, the accent wasn't familiar - something he'd heard before, but no one he was close to, even on other worlds - and turned to face the stranger curiously. Ivar wasn't the first to approach him in a wheelchair on the Quarantine, but if he noticed anything about him as his arm finally lowered it was that he looked notably more human than the last guy.]

Milotic.

[Ed didn't really know how to explain, he wasn't too well versed in Pokemon. That was the answer he had been given, after all.]

It's... A water Pokemon. They're a little unusual, I guess.
ragnarsson: ([11.8] Talking)

[personal profile] ragnarsson 2017-08-11 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
[It was a pretty, graceful looking creature, and Ivar's first reaction was wanting to touch the large Pokemon. However, owning a fire horse Pokemon that could burn people who he didn't trust made him hesitant to reach out towards it when he didn't know what the Milotic could do.]

So it's yours?

[Though the way some Pokemon acted around here, it seemed more like they adopted people rather than the other way around. Wong was definitely more responsible than Dr. Strange was and Hrimfaxi, his Blitzle, had lately taken it upon herself to boss Ivar around when she thought he needed her (unwanted) help.]

I don't think I've met anything here that could be classified as ordinary when it comes to Pokemon.
alchemyfreak: (fma015_lavaliere)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-08-12 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
[At the question, Ed's grin is sheepish.]

Something like that.

[He certainly doesn't want to give anyone the idea that the Milotic is free for the taking, but considering it his was too foreign a concept, even after all this time. If Ed knew what Ivar was thinking about Pokemon adopting their people rather than the other way around, he'd certainly agree with that assessment.

The last comment only made him smile politely, hesitant to reveal the truth about how rare a Milotic supposedly was. Again, he didn't know this guy and he didn't want any trouble.]

Pokemon are ... Pretty unique in general, you're right. According to the people with any knowledge I should consider myself lucky that this one chose to stick around, so I guess it's supposed to be something special. People had plenty where I was before here, but no one really talked about them much. At least, not anymore than their other pets... Cats and dogs...

Mantis is still adjusting to the beach, the sand that shifts under every step she takes, but someone had told her they were meant to be picking up, so Mantis has spent the last several hours picking bits of colored trash, paper and plastic from the otherwise pristine sand. She is fairly good at doing as she is told, after all.

It is as she is slowly placing each trash item into the bag she had been given, that something catches her attention down the beach. Something is very familiar about the nature of that blue light glinting over the damaged booths, smoothing the damage and revealing untouched walls and rooves in its place. Familiar indeed, though she does not recognize the man responsible. Hrm...

"Is that alchemy?" she finally cannot help but ask, after standing oddly silent behind him and studying the phenomena for some time.

Ed had grown used to people watching, and although some would stop and ask about it not everyone did. He'd gotten so used to the lingering presence of a bystander in crowd that they no longer struck him as odd and he barely noticed that he had a spectator.

The sound of a voice does get his attention though, and he stands from where he'd knelt to mend another broken piece of the establishment. Some of this was so easy, just put the pieces back together that had crumbled on the spot - but he knew that parts of the damaged area had been swept up in the cleaning efforts and that made his job harder. He tried not to be too bitter about it when he knew people were just trying to help in their own way, so when he turns to answer the question golden eyes fall on her trash bag before anything else.

"It is." He might sound a little guarded, forgive him Mantis, enough people have tried to shove the concept that alchemy is magic down his throat that this conversation rarely starts well. "On my world it's a science that reconstructs matter, so fixing up this broken stuff's pretty easy." Ed's watching her carefully as he slips science in there as if waiting to be countered, he doesn't place right away why he gets a sense of familiarity from her - he'd yet to figure out anyone at the Masquerade that he hadn't already known unless they gave themselves away.

This is usually when the other person tries to correct him, so he's ready for it.

Mantis is not terribly put off by the somewhat stand-offish tone, her curiosity has more than overridden any second guessing she may have done as to the mood of the person she has so suddenly questioned. She gives a small nod of understanding at the explanation, which lines up perfectly well with what she has already learned about the skill.

"I have been told that it requires a great deal of study and research to accomplish properly." She tilts her head, regarding him with interest, having also not put the pieces together that she is speaking to the very same person who informed her of that. "Have you been doing it very long?"
alchemyfreak: (fma113)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-08-18 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
A confused look crosses his features at her words, nodding. "It does. You might have talked to my brother... We're both here." And he doesn't remember her, so it seemed unlikely that they'd talked. However, her interpretation of alchemy was more like their's than what others have said to him so far, which makes it a good guess her knowledge came from one of them.

He paused, inspecting the mended wall to assure it was up to his standards. "We started as kids.... Basically, I've been doing it as long as I can remember."
feelybug: (understanding)

[personal profile] feelybug 2017-08-19 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
"It might have been your brother I met at the party. I do not actually know what he looked like."

Mantis also examines the repaired wall as he does, shifting her bag of collected litter from one gloved hand to another. It looks like a good wall. As it likely had before the damage, 'good as new' as Peter might say.

"It seems to be very helpful. It is very nice of you to use it this way."
