[OPEN] shattered glass and black holes
who: Bucky Barnes and YOU
what: Open catch-all for the rest of the month
when: Any time after the 20th
where: Around
warnings: Fighting atm, possible description of acid rain effects.
[I. Acid Rain]
[Bucky is on his way back to the housing complex when the stormclouds gather ominous in the sky. He pauses in the street to look up, frowning, noting the strange green tinge - and then the sky opens up and lets loose. Storms are one thing, but when he feels the exposed skin of his hand and cheeks starts to blister, he scowls harder, moving the shield off his back to use as a makeshift umbrella. It's wide enough to keep him mostly covered.
At least until he spots someone uncovered in the street. If you're trying to get to shelter, Bucky will tug you under the shield and start ushering you both to hide under the nearest concrete awning.] You don't want to let this shit touch your skin.
[II. Just Another Day at the Office]
[Bucky has been serving as a Squad Captain of Search and Rescue for over a month by now, and he's an obvious choice to head up one of the protection teams heading out into the woods to keep the payloads and their deliverymen safe. The hazmat suits they've been provided with are unattractive, but protective enough for the moment. Bucky is fully geared up, wearing his Cap suit underneath that and the extra layer of his Perimeter Guard jacket. The cowl is down for visibility's sake, but he's not exactly stealthy, carrying a large red, white and blue shield.
Thank god the rain seems to have no effect on metals. The vibranium of the shield is holding up perfectly.
The vehicle carrying the other team and their canisters of compound trundles ahead at a slow pace due to the fallen trees in the path. Bucky clicks on his radio headset, following on a cherry red Indian motorcycle that thankfully also seems fine in the rain, even if he might have to replace the leather of his seat later.] Spread out a bit but keep the truck in sight. We want to intercept these things before they become an issue for the payload carriers.
[III. Floor 5, Blackouts]
[Several months into living in Riverview, something Bucky's roommates might have noticed about him is that he's never seemed quite settled. His bed, desk, and general area are all immaculately clean and mostly devoid of personal items. Whatever he's accrued here besides clothes, he keeps in a locked box under his bed. Maybe it makes sense, then, that he's at the kitchen table one evening with a takeout container of cold fried rice, browsing classified ads on his phone. Buildings for sale and rent, different types of housing. Nothing is set in stone, but he's casting out feelers.
Of course, in the middle of his late dinner is about when the power flickers off with a crackle, and Bucky throws his chopsticks down on the table, cursing out loud.] Fuck. Again? [He huffs out a breath and gets up from the table to go dig in one of the kitchen drawers. If he hears one of his floormates come in, he'll say,] Hey, do we have any candles?
[IV. Gym, Blackouts]
[Bucky's gym of choice near the housing building is small, and generally does whatever it can to attract people to pay to use it. During a particularly long blackout, someone had the bright idea to fill it with battery-powered LED lamps (in safe places, not too close to the equipment or where they might be knocked down) and make a whole 'rustic' thing out of it. Apparently at least one person is fine working out in low lighting.
Bucky's on the pommel horse, running through a difficult acrobatics routine. Strength training is important, but as he gets older (and as he's gotten heavier), so is maintaining his flexibility. The shield is leaning against the wall nearby, lit by a steady LED lamp; he'll add it to the routine later, practice his return angles and throws.
The mats are open, though, if you'd like to invite him to spar in the poor light conditions. It could be good training.]

He'd barely even payed attention to who he'd been grouped with, which might have been a mistake. But most of his attention was on banking through the trees -- not his favorite way to fly, but the coverage was too heavy to be able to see anything if he went over the top -- and he only realized he'd been tracking a very familiar shield when he drew up close enough to see the figure on the motorcycle.
Which meant he was even more startled when the voice that came through the headset wasn't either of the ones he was sort of expecting. To his credit, it didn't affect his flying, at least. He had been warned about this, after all.]
Do we know what exactly we're keeping an eye out for? [He draws up alongside the bike as he asks, keeping pace with it.]
no subject
Tony draws up alongside his bike, and Bucky turns his eyes back to the road. Possibly this is the new one, judging from the voice.] Very well camouflaged boars or elk, apparently. Thick layer of bark and vegetation on the back that means the rain doesn't bother them. Picking up any heat signatures?
no subject
Well, good. Tony veers off slightly to the side to put more space between them, though he stays even with Barnes and his bike.]
Track them down or wait for them to come out, you think? [His tone is almost more curious than anything. Wondering exactly what type of a leader Barnes is. He's past the point of pushing just for the sake looking for a reaction and he'll genuinely go along with either option, but well. He can't help wanting to know.]
no subject
Finally, he gets tired of trying to strategize. Keep it simple, stupid. Right?] Got anything like a flashbang? [He starts to veer off from the convoy's path, aiming for a clearing to divert them to.] I need some light and noise. We can divert their attention from the trucks. [This could be a flawed plan, considering he doesn't know how many are out there following the convoy, but he's reasonably sure Tony will be fine in the air. The biggest danger will be to himself on the ground. It's a risk he'll take.]
no subject
I have been known to be flashy. Are we playing bait now? [His tone is mild, but there's a particular emphasis on the we. Honestly, it sounds more like the kind of plan he'd come up with than anything he'd expect from Cap -- any of them. The armor can stand up to both the rain and the odd animal attack no question, but Barnes? That's a lot more uncertain.]
Or you can stay with the truck and I can lead them off. [Someone had to watch the payload, anyway.]
no subject
[He snorts at that suggestion.] Tryin' to get rid of me? I can handle this. Got you for air cover.
no subject
Your faith in me is touching. [And well. It kinda is, actually. Which isn't going to stop him from being sarcastic about it, but still.]
Tell me when you want me to start lighting things up.
no subject
Light 'er up.
no subject
He pulls a quick circle of the clearly to get a sense of what he's working with, then drifts into a hover a few feet over Barnes' head. Once he's sure they other man is settled, he points both hands towards the very edge of the clearing and fires both repulsors at the ground.
It's not full blast, but it's not subtle either. It's bright and loud and just enough to scorch the ground. That should definitely get them some attention.]
no subject
It's hard to see these things. Their camouflage is excellent, but they aren't exactly quiet in such a big group, snorting and snuffling and rustling around. The first one breaks the stand-still and barrels into the clearing - Bucky lifts his gun and shoots it right between the eyes.
That... seems to piss them off. Hopefully Tony is ready for the swarm.]
no subject
I think we got their attention.
[It's dry and clearly distracted, but never let it be said that Tony can't find any opportunity to run his mouth. He's getting a better read on the creatures the more they come out of hiding, though.]
Want me to chase the rest out?
no subject
It keeps the things from going after the convoy, and that's what's important.]
Just take 'em down, can't risk them circling around to the convoy.
no subject
Of course it means that they're all heading right towards Barnes, now, but it's not like they weren't both ready for that. Tony picks a couple of them off with quick shots before they can get close, then begins to circle tightly to make sure he's got all of the creatures where he wants them.]
no subject
One slams into him from behind and sends him flying with a grunt, but he's on his feet quickly, hurling the shield behind him without even looking. It bounces off a tree truck and thunks between the creature's eyes with a wet sound. He doesn't stop for a moment, charging back into the fray.]
no subject
He leaves the main bulk of it to Barnes, since the man seems to be happy there anyway. As vaguely familiar as a lot of his moves are, Tony hasn't fought with him before and isn't about to trust that he can guess at the man's actions well enough to be able to fire into the melee and not hit him by accident. Instead, Tony keeps an eye on the outskirts, picking off stragglers and any of the little monsters attempting to escape.
It doesn't stop him from tracking the whole lot of them, though, at least enough to twist out of the way of the shield whenever it flashes in his direction. Which means that he catches it just as one of the creatures gathers itself to leap directly towards Barnes' blind spot. Tony barely manages to get out a sharp,] duck, [before he's firing to meet the beast mid-air. And hopefully not catching the man in the meantime.]
no subject
They might not know each other all that well, and he doesn't know this Tony's history with his world's Barnes, but Tony is an Avenger, and he inherently has a level of trust in him. Which is why when Tony says duck, Bucky ducks and rolls in the opposite direction of Iron Man, taking his word for it.
Tony takes care of a creature that would have probably gored him on its tusks, and he flashes him a brief thumbs up before he's kicking another one off him and surging to his feet again.]
no subject
He picks off a few of the more adventurous ones at the front of the pack, then darts over to start herding the remnants towards Barnes. The man seems pretty happy taking them down his his bare hands, who is Tony to deny him his fun?]
no subject
That went better than expected.
no subject
Should I be offended?
[There's no actual venom in it, though. Just the faint pleasure of a job well done.]
Should probably catch up with the others, just in case.
no subject
Yeah, we should go check that none of them peeled off and went after the convoy.
no subject
You're welcome. Can you find your bike or you need a lift?
no subject
He shakes his head.] I can find it. It's just a quarter mile back. Go check the convoy, radio me if they run into issues before I get there.
no subject
[Tony even throws in a salute, though it's probably pretty obvious that he's being sarcastic about it. He does lift into the air with a quick flare of repulsors, though, he can be sarcastic and still agree with the order.]
Keep in touch, I'll let you know what the status is. Try not to get eaten while I'm gone.
