Library
[ Kaneki isn’t happy to be in this whole new world – he is so tired to be thrown into sort of terrible new situations where he is forced to adapt. And yes, he does consider being here as the only almost-ghoul something terrible; being on his own and having to do the things he needs on his own is stressful and kind of horrible.

Regardless, there are some really positive things, such as working at the library and having access to thousands of books from thousands of authors he never even heard. It’s true, not all are interesting, and he doesn’t quite get many of them since they talk about things that don’t exist on Kaneki’s world, but he is completely in love with what he is got.

And that is easy to notice, since Kaneki is reading while he works – can it be even called “work” when his eyes are glued to the pages and he barely seems to notice others? Though, even if it doesn’t look like he is paying attention, he is, so don’t try to act smart (not that he’d be any good at a confrontation, but…ah well…).

At least he is smiling a bit – a genuine smile, too. ]


Coffee shop (at the library too)
[ Another job Kaneki has, though still at the same workplace, requires a different skill: coffee making. And if there is one thing Kaneki knows, is to make damn good coffee, thanks to working at a ghoul café back home. Though at first he was a bit clumsy with the machines they gave him, he soon worked everything out, and it’s no surprise a lot of people seem to enjoy spending some time reading while they sip their cappuccino.

He is actually pretty proud of himself, and really wishes the manager was there to see how good he got with time. Regardless, Kaneki will meet the next client with a bright big smile: come on, come on, try one of the best coffees around made by yours truly ]


Outside the laboratories (cw ; CANNIBALISM)
[ One of the things Kaneki avoids like the plague is eating. Not the normal food someone else would, but the only food he can eat: human flesh. And ever since he arrived, he refused to eat, but it comes a time when he has to give in because he knows that the longer he goes without eating, more dangerous it can get.

So when hunger is way too loud and no coffee can curb it, he finally gives in and heads to the laboratories. The meat he is given is mostly synthetic, which means he doesn’t have to feel guilty that he’s eating someone who died, but it doesn’t push away the terrible idea that is to eat people, to eat human flesh. Which is what he has in his backpack right now.

Once he is given his food (he hates calling it food), kaneki puts it inside the backpack, refuses to eat there, and just rushes out as quickly as he can, so he can find a hidden secret spot where he can eat. And maybe that’s when he bumps into someone, who knows? ]

[Wikus notices the scent before he notices Kaneki, the odor prickling over the surface of his antennae, faint but distinct. It's not that his sense of smell has improved exactly, it's more that his sensitivity to different smells has changed.

For example, he'd know the scent of raw meat anywhere and, much to his chagrin, his body thinks it smells delicious. The​ scent makes his mouth water, but the idea of eating uncooked meat gives him the willies.

He'd be even more disturbed if he recognized just what type of meat this was.]

Hey, Kaneki, man, what's the hurry?

[He's not going anywhere fast himself, hobbling around on crutches as he is.]

[ When Kaneki sees Wikus, he honestly looks incredibly freaked out at first. But after a couple of deep breaths, he decide he needs to look as normal as possible and hopefully Wikus won't be able to tell something is wrong. ]

Ah... Wikus-san... Just--- need to be somewhere. [ he smiles after, even though he looks seriously awkward ]

[Luckily for Kaneki, Wikus takes the brief look of horror as something completely different. After all, his head is essentially 75% transformed now, and the contrast between that and his mouth and right eye and part of his cheek still essentially looking human is a bit freaky.]

Sorry for, ah, startling you. I know I'm not exactly pleasant to look at right now. Good thing I didn't greet you in a dark alley, hey?

[ that does shock him too, but Kaneki isn't worried about that right now. or rather, he barely noticed due to how worried he is about being found out. ]

Ah- no... it's alright. [ now that he looks at Wikus properly... yeah, it's a bit freaky, but Kaneki is not going to comment on that. He tries to smile a bit and quickly reaches to touch his own chin ]

Are you feeling better? [ better than usual. Kaneki figures asking him how is he would get him "Shitty" for an answer. ]

[Yep, definitely assuming Kaneki's just weirded out by his appearance. On top of his regular awkwardness.]

The body's still a heaping​ pile of shit- [He adjusts his crutches meaningfully.] -But I'm actually settling in here now. Got a job.

I'm glad. [ should he ask if it hurts? Would that be insensitive? Probably, so kaneki decides not to ask ]

I'm a, uh, Employment Placement Clerk with the government. So my job is giving other people jobs.

[ Tsumugi badly misses the library back home, but maybe this one in the Quarantine won't be so bad. It is kind of overwhelming seeing all these books that came from other worlds and are written by authors he's never heard of before... He'll need some help.

So he approaches Kaneki, who he supposes is the librarian? And politely coughs to get his attention. The other male is shown to be smiling, and Tsumugi is relieved -- at least someone here likes books as much as he does? ]

Um, excuse me... I need a bit if help, if you don't mind.

[ when there is a soft cough, Kaneki quickly looks away from his book - though he is distracted a bit, of course he is serious about his job - and is ready to offer Tsumugi a smile ]

Hello. Sorry, I was caught up in the book. [ he places the book he was reading down ] How can i help you?

[ tsumugi blinks at the book kaneki is reading - he's not sure if he's head of the author but it must be good if he's smiling like that? ]

I'd like to ask for recommendations for new books to read? I've only arrived recently, you see, and there's too many books I've never seen before in my life that I don't know where else to start.

[ oh Kaneki has SO MANY recommendations- but before he starts ranting and ranting about all the books he has found, in order to do his job properly, some questions need to be asked first ]

I know the feeling, it's overwhelming at first. But the library is amazing, it has everything.

What kind of books do you enjoy?

I've always have a soft spot for fantasy novels -- things like princes fighting monsters, or anything that has all sorts of magic in it.

Though I've never been to a library with a very extensive collection like this before... my high school back home has a decent-sized library, but it's usually empty because not a lot of teenagers read books anymore. [ sigh ]

there is a lot of that here. [ kaneki will now move from his spot, since he will be showing Tsumugi where to find the books ] A lot of them will feel like science fiction because it involves other worlds, other species and strange technology but there are many good books here, regardless.

[ he smiles a little glancing back at the other ] I guess I was lucky. MY father left me a huge collection of books and I always loved reading so I always had a lot of books around me. Still do, actually. [ since he works at a library now ]

[Eichi doesn't have very quick reflexes, with his body the way that it is. Kaneki collides straight into him, and he stumbles back a couple of steps before falling onto his ass and hands. What a rushing force...

He coughs a couple of times, because his health isn't behaving properly to begin with, covering his mouth with a now-scraped hand before he glances up.]

Kaneki-kun? [It's strange to see him in this much of a rush.]

[ when kaneki bumps into Eichi, it's already a surprise, but because aneki is incredibly sturdy, Eichi probably felt that harder than he should have - and the ghoul realizes it the moment he sees the other boy fall back and coughing. ]

Ah! I'm so sorry, Eichi-kun! [ he is quick reach for him, trying to help Eichi to get back on his feet ] Are you alright? Did I hurt you?

I'm still conscious, so there's no need to worry at all.

[He says that like he's serious that consciousness is what it should be based off of. He coughs once more, then accepts Kaneki's help up. It takes him a moment to stand straight, and then he brushes himself off.]

I should be asking you that question. Are you alright? Rushing out like that... You look troubled. Is someone chasing you?

I am, I'm fine- [ kaneki's attention shifted to Eichi instead because he really is worried about him; after all, the boy is sick and Kaneki knows that his health is frail. He also knows that bumping against kaneki is like hitting a brick wall thanks to hims ghoul physiology, so it doesn't help in the least. ]

Are you sure you are alright? I should see where I'm going, I'm sorry.

[He keeps his hand near his chin so he can easily cover the next cough or two, lifting his free hand to wave off concern.]

My health has been on a downward slope lately, but it wasn't Kaneki-kun's fault at all. Where are you headed, if I can ask?

Er, to my room, actually. [ not really. he was trying to find a private quiet place where he wouldn't be found eating. But it's not like he can say such thing to the other ]

The doctors haven't found a way to help you with your health? [ since Eichi said it has been getting worse ]

[For the last hour, she's been dutifully hunched over a table scribbling notes from the textbooks she was given. It's been hard trying to readjust-going from looking out for daemons and enemy armies back to studying and classes, but she's trying. Thankfully, the library has done wonders in helping her focus and it's only now that she finally wanders over to the coffee shop for a much needed break.]

Hey, this all looks pretty good. What's your favorite drink?

Doesn't it? Very fancy too. [ he smiles at the girl before he looks around. Kaneki sure enjoys this place; out of everything that has been happening, this certainly is the best part of it ]

My favorite drink is coffee [ the only drink he can have apart from water, if he's being honest ] I think that's expected, though, since I am the one making it.

Regular coffee huh?

[That makes sense, being he is the one working here. It's enough to make her deviate from her normal order at these places, which are usually more milk and sugar than actual coffee. Time to live life on the edge.]

[ his cappuccinos are amazing too, but kaneki still isn't all that confident in them. At least his coffee is completely made from scratch so it means there is also a special care in every cup. Ghouls are really picky about coffee and Kaneki has learned to be so as well - brand, how the beans are toasted, the water temperature, even the foam that forms on the surface.

but when he gives Iris her coffee, at least it will taste really darn good ]

[While he's making it, she completes the process of swiping her card on the machine to pay. She doesn't want to go to jail for stolen coffee. Not today at least.

When he comes back, she offers a quick 'thanks' and raises the cup up to her face to get a whiff of it. Then a quick blow against it to get rid of some of the heat and she takes her first sip. It's bitter, but very good.]

I can already feel myself waking up. This is great!

when he hears the compliment, kaneki's face brightens up right away ] Thank you! I'm glad you like it! [ back home he had the Manager to tell him when coffee was right or not, but here he has to go by what his clients tell him. He hasn't gotten any complaints so far, so maybe he is on a good track. ]

I forgot to ask if you want sure or anything else? [ vanilla, some people like that in their coffees, though kaneki isn't a fan ]
