prijata

In the days leading up to June 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Prijata. Riverview Quarantine has a strong culture of love, and they celebrate all types - Prijata is a special celebration of platonic love and building community through friendship. Prijata traditions include gift exchanges between friends, sharing meals cooked together by friend groups, and a variety of events and services aimed at making friends.

a celebration of platonic love

Prijata is a relatively relaxed holiday, focused mainly on friendship and platonic love - dedicated to appreciating the friends already in one's life, and opening oneself up to making new friends. Besides the private giving of gifts between friends, there is also a city-wide government-sponsored gift fountain that is open throughout the entire week. Included in the wide variety of events catered to finding new friends, are 'speed friending' and a large open exhibition where all the specialized clubs in Riverview can recruit for new members - and residents new or old can create a club and recruit.

i. gift fountain

While Prijata gift exchanges between friends are generally a quiet affair, done at friend-group dinners or parties, the element of gift giving does extend outward - community-wide, in fact. Throughout the course of the week, anyone living in Riverview Quarantine can drop by the huge fountain in the City Center, in front of the City Hall. They will find that the fountain is chock full of floating gift boxes in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and different shapes - though none larger than a shoe box. There are signs put up around the fountain stating that the boxes are magic and will only seek and open for their rightful owners. Characters will find that, upon touching the water, a box will float over to them, and when they pick it up, the top will unfurl like flower petals, displaying the gift inside. Sometimes, the box won't appear on the first try, since there's only so much space in the fountain at any given time, but if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Every person in the city (including new arrivals) will receive one gift by the end of the week.

Gift fountain boxes will contain one small item from each character's home dimension (or, for CRAUs, from their previous game), similar to the "items from home" bonus reward, but without needing to spend points. The item should be small enough to fit in a shoebox, sentimental, and cannot be something intended for another person's character. ETA: If you can't think of an item like this that would work for your character, something of similar size and quality to what's described above that would make the character very happy can be substituted.

This prompt can also be used for gift exchanges and for characters to receive the Government-given gifts that were suggested in the Prijata Pregaming posts on the OOC community and the TDM.

ii. speed-friending

This is pretty much what it says on the tin! Much like speed-dating setups, many bars, coffee shops, and other places that people might gather are holding speed-friending! It's your standard setup - characters enter and fill out a quick questionnaire about themselves, and flit from table to table looking for someone with great friend chemistry. Not all of them are general and open to anyone who walks in, though, with many being specialized to people who are invested in certain hobbies, occupations, or with specific sets of interests. With specialized speed-friending setups ranging from horror movie buffs to members of the Perimeter Guard to fashionistas to sports or martial arts to video games, no matter what your character is into, they're likely to be able to sign up for a special event where they can go looking for a friend who's into the same things they are!

For this prompt, you can put up a list of hobbies or interests your character has, and compatible characters can hit them up for a speed-friending thread, like the IC equivalent of the CR meme!

iii. club exhibition

Speed-friending is all well and good, but not everyone is outgoing or open enough to know if they have friend chemistry in only a few minutes. For anyone looking to find groups of like-minded individuals they can spend more than a few minutes with before committing to something as daunting as a friendship, there is a week-long club exhibition happening in the Town Square in the City Center. Table after table and booth after booth are occupied by existing clubs in the city, with an incredibly broad scope of focus interests and hobbies - enough that any character should be able to find a club with their niche interest represented.

And if it isn't? Characters are welcome to start their own clubs - much like a business, a character-run club can have space set aside in the city for meetings and event mingles that are eligible for Activity Point Bonuses for the organizer.

iv. unveiling the new friendr

Prijata this year is marked by something special - the unveiling of a code rebuild of the ubiquitous Friendr app! Anyone with the app installed already will receive a prompt to update the app, and if anyone hasn't yet downloaded it, they'll receive a quick, easily-dismissed pop-up ad on their device when they next access the network, asking if they want to. No one is obligated, and the ad is a one-time instance, intended to make sure any character who hasn't heard of the app gets a chance.

The Friendr app is a swipe-left-or-right style friend matching and/or dating app that is very common in Riverview, both for PCs and NPCs, and it has received an upgrade with a new appearance, a new interests line for more accurate matching, and a wide variety of themes so that the colors can be customized!

Please see the updated appearance below, with the 'default' color scheme. Players are free to change the colors or appearance of the code but please do not remove the credit line showing where the base code came from, out of respect for the code creator.

For this prompt, you can either post your character's new, fancy Friendr app profile in the comments, or provide a link to their updated code in an entry on their journal. Whatever floats your boat!

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during Prijata, feel free to write it up!

[Quentin had stared down into the fountain's primly cascading waters, the artificiality of which is in the end one and the same with the slow quiet branch of the creek that cuts through his family's property crying into her damp blouse then she was lying on her back looking past me and the glass-bottle colored Charles churning beneath his shadow, all of it trickling from the same spring in his mind. Then as if in answer to some inquiry or plea he does not speak, from the water rose a box that floated toward him with unmistakable intent.

He sits now at the fountain's edge clutching the pocket watch which had belonged to his grandfather, and which his father had given him not that he may remember time but that he might forget it now and then for a moment and not spend all his breath trying to conquer it, he said, the watch whose erroneous ticking he could not fix before he left it with Shreve and stepped out into the twilight. He opens it then, taking stock of Lucretia only at the edge of his vision where she is an inscrutable shape first and then a person, a negro woman, when at last he looks proper.]

Say, do you have the time?

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-11 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
(Lucretia is staring out across the fountain, lost in thought when a sudden voice makes her start. She tucks her shell trinket into her pocket, glancing down and to her left– somebody is perched on the edge of the fountain.)

The time? I– oh, yes. One moment. (Her phone tells the time doesn't it? Lucretia isn't sure if she remembers how to make it do that; she pulls it out of her robes, turning it over in her palm. Thankfully a brief touch on the screen brings the display up, and the time with it.)

Nearly half-past two.

[personal profile] shadowstepped 2017-06-12 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[He glances down at the watch's lying face, behind which hide the still ticking tiny gears that keep him one day you'd think misfortune would get tired but then time is your misfortune Father said in time, and he jostles it a bit as if this might unstick whatever is stuck.]

Even here this old thing won't give the right time.

[Then his eyes rise to her.]

Well, thank you anyhow.

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-14 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome.

(Lucretia thought she would be able to leave it at that, but curiousity, as always, gets the better of her. She hesitates for a moment, then gestures at the watch in his hands.)

Why do you keep it if it won't tell the time correctly?
shadowstepped: (→never ending math equation)

[personal profile] shadowstepped 2017-06-14 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a present from my father. It used to be my grandfather's, kept him marching through the war I suspect.

[He does not yet shift to close the watch or tuck it away, holding it there in his palm, almost feeling the ticking of it as it slays time. He remembers twisting off the hands, minute and second, as deliberate in the act as the gears of the watch itself, and the smear of red across the cover, the stinging in his thumb.]

Actually, it's in better shape than I left it in. I knocked it off my dresser the other morning, stepped on it by accident.
scholiast: <user name=anonbeadraws site=tumblr.com> ((young) unconvinced)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-15 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. (Lucretia winces imperceptibly; of course the reason is sentimental.) I'm sorry.

(She watches him balance it on his palm, flat and open. The mention of the war has made her somber, thoughtful as she glances away across the fountain. The portal pulls people from all walks of life, yet a lot of them have experienced war in some capacity.)

'The other morning'? I suppose you're new to the city too, then.
shadowstepped: (→but we used them like a dam)

[personal profile] shadowstepped 2017-06-15 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It ain't nothing to feel sorry for. You couldn't have known.

[ Yet perhaps sorry is an apt term for it after all. For him it is not so much sentiment as it is obligation that compels him to keep the watch, the incapability of not having the watch rather than any desire to keep it, but perhaps it is all one and the same.]

And yes, I suppose I'm new as can be. It wasn't but a few days ago I was in Cambridge. You ever heard of Cambridge?
scholiast: <user name=wheresmytabletpen site=tumblr.com> (☆ i dont like lup what are you)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-16 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
(She thinks for a moment. The name doesn't sounds familiar to her; she shrugs.)

No, I don't believe so. But I've been to many planets before that didn't have names, so I could have easily been to Cambridge and not have known it.

What is it like?
shadowstepped: (→the universe is shaped like the earth)

[personal profile] shadowstepped 2017-06-17 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[He refrains from answering her question (and perhaps he should have said Mississippi instead, because even after nine months Cambridge still retained the feeling of a foreign land to him) in favor of asking one of his own.]

Hold on, it's not a whole planet in itself, it's just a city-- Hold on now, you've already been to other planets before?
scholiast: <user name=cerigg site=tumblr.com> (☆ wall flower)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-17 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, of course.

(It's strange, that she's still encountering people who find this odd. But then, Taako had mentioned there were humans here who not only cannot use magic, but can hardly comprehend it existing at all, so.)

Is that odd to you?
shadowstepped: (→the universe is shaped like the earth)

[personal profile] shadowstepped 2017-06-18 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course it is. I reckon most would find it odd. It sounds like something out of a book.

[He comes from a time not ten years after the Wright Brothers flew that first airplane, and before the conception of rocket science, before the conception of the dream for man to float in the blackness of space and walk upon the chalky surface of the moon.]

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-18 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the people I've met so far haven't found it out of the ordinary, actually.

(She grins fleetingly, and puts a hand into her pocket, pulling out a small, nondescript notebook. It's a little rough around the edges, the whole thing held shut properly with a rubber band.) Technically it is out of a book? Sort of. I'm an author; I've been chronicling my mission as we go.
shadowstepped: (→far enough wasn't far enough)

[personal profile] shadowstepped 2017-06-19 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
[He looks up at her from where he still sits on the ledge that forms the perimeter of the fountain, with a look that is shaped both by amazement and wariness. Already he has spent too much time calculating distant years and the vast quantity of planets and countries that are all foreign to him.]

You have a mission, ma'am?

[Here is the first instance that he bestows upon her such an address, for she seems suddenly worthy of it.]
scholiast: <user name=whyskalker site=tumblr.com> (☆ think of your friends)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-19 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, yes.

(She tucks the book away, and then sits down at the fountain's edge too so he doesn't have to keep looking up at her. It's a little more comfortable too, to address him at eye level; though he probably isn't going to handle the descriptor of her mission very well if he isn't used to the idea of her having visited other planets before.

She hesitates.)

It's quite complicated.
shadowstepped: (→you're breathing in)

[personal profile] shadowstepped 2017-06-20 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[The watch too he has slipped back into his jacket by now, where he does not quite forget about its steady ticking, always slaying time on those little wheels.]

Most everyone's story is complicated, whether it happens inside just one country or all across the galaxy. That's all right if you can't explain it, though. It's all right.
scholiast: <user name=ursminor site=tumblr.com> (☆ no pressure)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-21 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

(A lot of people here have been far more understanding about her circumstances than she's given them credit for. Perhaps because she's become used to planets full of people who shoot first and ask questions later.)

Is your story complicated too?
shadowstepped: (→you're breathing in)

[personal profile] shadowstepped 2017-06-21 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[He thinks of Caddy up in the tree with her muddy drawers, and Caddy on her back in the grass draped in grey light and the odor of honeysuckle, holding his hand to her throat and he feeling the surge in her pulse when he said it Dalton Ames. Do you love him? Did you love them Caddy? When they touched me I died. Caddy in bridal white, Father saying that purity is a negative state. He answers slowly.]

I don't know.

[Thinking, maybe it don't make a lick of sense to anybody else. Or maybe I'm the only one who can't make sense of it.]
scholiast: <user name=snuffysbox site=tumblr.com> (★ we fire you out of a canon)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-22 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
(He might not know if his story is complicated, but the look that briefly passes across his face sure is. Lucretia puts her chin in her hand and gazes out across the fountain. She gives him a moment, then clears her throat quietly.)

Do you want to talk about it?

(She doesn't necessarily mean to intrude, it's just that this is what she does best. She asks questions, and she listens, and she gathers as many stories as she possibly can.)
shadowstepped: (→never ending math equation)

[personal profile] shadowstepped 2017-06-23 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
[He looks over his shoulder and down into the rippling fountain waters, beneath which glimmer myriad coins tossed on behalf of momentary desires.]

I don't know your name yet, ma'am.

[This he says both as a means of abeyance and of telling her that they are but strangers.]
scholiast: <user name=foxaes site=tumblr.com> (☆ save the world with fanfic)

Oh, of course.

(She gives him a quick, nervous glance. He's staring into the water, contemplative; she rubs the back of her neck slowly.)

My name is Lucretia. And you?
shadowstepped: (→where do circles begin)

[personal profile] shadowstepped 2017-06-24 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm Quentin.

[His eyes have not yet risen from the water, captured by its rhythmic movements.]

Lucretia...she was the wife of some Roman consul or another, wasn't she? She was raped by the king's son, and so she stabbed herself right through the heart, because she'd rather be dead than live with the shame of such a violation.

[Caddy draped in the sticky cloying scent of honeysuckle, her throat tender beneath the point of his knife it won't take but a second I'll try not to hurt. He, crying against her breasts, hard and damp from the river, her hand not warm, not cool. Don't cry I'm bad anyway you can't help it. Purity a negative state, Father said, and man the sum of his misfortunes. A curse on us it's not our fault is it our fault.]

Uh...

(She trails off, quite unsure of what to make of that. The question feels horribly personal. To think he had just protested her asking if he'd like to talk about himself, and then he turns around and spits this one out.)

Wrong Lucretia, I think. (She jokes, glancing down at her hands as she twists them in her lap.)

[He lifts his eyes at last to look at her with his brow furrowed as if she has just said something strange.]

No, I wouldn't expect you're that Lucretia any more than I'm my great-grandfather, although I've got the same name as him.

[Quentin Maclachlan Compson, the governor, who later would be declared the last Compson who did not fail in everything he did.]

Well, yes, obviously.

(He's quite... strange, isn't he? Lucretia hums, and stretches her arms out in front of her, shucking her sleeves down from where they've bunched up by the crooks of her elbows.)

Do you know that Lucretia? Or is she from a story? (The later would be the better outcome, of course. If such a Lucretia existed, she would feel very badly for her.)

No'm, she lived a long time ago, so long ago that it's hard to know precisely what happened. History is like that: each person has a different piece of the puzzle, but after a long while most of the pieces get lost. Then you have to believe whatever piece is left.
