prijata

In the days leading up to June 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Prijata. Riverview Quarantine has a strong culture of love, and they celebrate all types - Prijata is a special celebration of platonic love and building community through friendship. Prijata traditions include gift exchanges between friends, sharing meals cooked together by friend groups, and a variety of events and services aimed at making friends.

a celebration of platonic love

Prijata is a relatively relaxed holiday, focused mainly on friendship and platonic love - dedicated to appreciating the friends already in one's life, and opening oneself up to making new friends. Besides the private giving of gifts between friends, there is also a city-wide government-sponsored gift fountain that is open throughout the entire week. Included in the wide variety of events catered to finding new friends, are 'speed friending' and a large open exhibition where all the specialized clubs in Riverview can recruit for new members - and residents new or old can create a club and recruit.

i. gift fountain

While Prijata gift exchanges between friends are generally a quiet affair, done at friend-group dinners or parties, the element of gift giving does extend outward - community-wide, in fact. Throughout the course of the week, anyone living in Riverview Quarantine can drop by the huge fountain in the City Center, in front of the City Hall. They will find that the fountain is chock full of floating gift boxes in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and different shapes - though none larger than a shoe box. There are signs put up around the fountain stating that the boxes are magic and will only seek and open for their rightful owners. Characters will find that, upon touching the water, a box will float over to them, and when they pick it up, the top will unfurl like flower petals, displaying the gift inside. Sometimes, the box won't appear on the first try, since there's only so much space in the fountain at any given time, but if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Every person in the city (including new arrivals) will receive one gift by the end of the week.

Gift fountain boxes will contain one small item from each character's home dimension (or, for CRAUs, from their previous game), similar to the "items from home" bonus reward, but without needing to spend points. The item should be small enough to fit in a shoebox, sentimental, and cannot be something intended for another person's character. ETA: If you can't think of an item like this that would work for your character, something of similar size and quality to what's described above that would make the character very happy can be substituted.

This prompt can also be used for gift exchanges and for characters to receive the Government-given gifts that were suggested in the Prijata Pregaming posts on the OOC community and the TDM.

ii. speed-friending

This is pretty much what it says on the tin! Much like speed-dating setups, many bars, coffee shops, and other places that people might gather are holding speed-friending! It's your standard setup - characters enter and fill out a quick questionnaire about themselves, and flit from table to table looking for someone with great friend chemistry. Not all of them are general and open to anyone who walks in, though, with many being specialized to people who are invested in certain hobbies, occupations, or with specific sets of interests. With specialized speed-friending setups ranging from horror movie buffs to members of the Perimeter Guard to fashionistas to sports or martial arts to video games, no matter what your character is into, they're likely to be able to sign up for a special event where they can go looking for a friend who's into the same things they are!

For this prompt, you can put up a list of hobbies or interests your character has, and compatible characters can hit them up for a speed-friending thread, like the IC equivalent of the CR meme!

iii. club exhibition

Speed-friending is all well and good, but not everyone is outgoing or open enough to know if they have friend chemistry in only a few minutes. For anyone looking to find groups of like-minded individuals they can spend more than a few minutes with before committing to something as daunting as a friendship, there is a week-long club exhibition happening in the Town Square in the City Center. Table after table and booth after booth are occupied by existing clubs in the city, with an incredibly broad scope of focus interests and hobbies - enough that any character should be able to find a club with their niche interest represented.

And if it isn't? Characters are welcome to start their own clubs - much like a business, a character-run club can have space set aside in the city for meetings and event mingles that are eligible for Activity Point Bonuses for the organizer.

iv. unveiling the new friendr

Prijata this year is marked by something special - the unveiling of a code rebuild of the ubiquitous Friendr app! Anyone with the app installed already will receive a prompt to update the app, and if anyone hasn't yet downloaded it, they'll receive a quick, easily-dismissed pop-up ad on their device when they next access the network, asking if they want to. No one is obligated, and the ad is a one-time instance, intended to make sure any character who hasn't heard of the app gets a chance.

The Friendr app is a swipe-left-or-right style friend matching and/or dating app that is very common in Riverview, both for PCs and NPCs, and it has received an upgrade with a new appearance, a new interests line for more accurate matching, and a wide variety of themes so that the colors can be customized!

Please see the updated appearance below, with the 'default' color scheme. Players are free to change the colors or appearance of the code but please do not remove the credit line showing where the base code came from, out of respect for the code creator.

» Preferences: sexual preference or n/a
» Interests: three interests

For this prompt, you can either post your character's new, fancy Friendr app profile in the comments, or provide a link to their updated code in an entry on their journal. Whatever floats your boat!

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during Prijata, feel free to write it up!

speed friending!

[personal profile] wronganswer 2017-06-04 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[ By this time she's changed out of her body armor into something a lot more casual, if somewhat bland. A careful observer will still probably be able to make out a heavy pistol concealed beneath her leather jacket. Apart from that, Anderson is the picture of a young, soft-faced woman, with a slightly closed-off but reluctantly curious expression.

She can't say she doesn't know what she's doing here. She'd like to make friends, and it seems a lot more plausible happening here than at home. In addition, she really does want to take this time to read more, all the censored material she'd never be able to find at home or just the things she wouldn't have had time for. Getting recommendations is a good excuse to speak to people.

Yet she's hesitant, because her psychic abilities make this all even more of a game for her than for norms. Anderson generally doesn't read people actively, not unless she has reason to, but sometimes she can't resist a cursory check for honesty when someone is speaking. It's too ingrained in her. It makes it hard to get things past her and takes a lot of the fun out of the scenario. By the time she gets to Jim, she's feeling fairly disheartened, and is contemplating leaving. Her nametag actually does say Anderson; it would feel too weird for someone she just met to use her first name. Some adjustments she just can't make in two days. ]

Hi, [ she opens with, trying not to seem too obviously uncomfortable and only partly succeeding. ] I hope you know something about literature. [ The ostensible theme of the event. Anderson certainly doesn't. ]

[ ooc: Could I also trouble you to fill out my permissions post for telepathy/empathy? In case it comes up! ]
winscenario: (seventy two.)

[ Jim, on the other hand, isn't particularly discouraged just yet. Granted, not everyone he's met here has been that interesting, but he won't call it an unsuccessful venture until he gives up without giving it his best shot. Speed friending is, funnily enough, pretty much like speed dating in that aspect. It's a hit-or-miss game with a lot of the latter and few of the former. But it doesn't mean it doesn't work, and at least it's an entertaining way to spend his time. For the most part.

When the young woman sits across the table from him, Jim smiles openly, looking about as relaxed and at ease as he feels. Meeting new people has never been all that difficult for him, considering how sociable and charismatic he is. ]

Well I wouldn't call myself an expert, but 'something' I can manage. [ A little more than 'something', but no need to get into details. ] I know a little bit of various worlds and eras, but 19th and 20th century Earth are what I'm most comfortable with. What about you?

[ ooc: done! :) ]
wronganswer: (05)

thank you!!

[personal profile] wronganswer 2017-06-05 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Anderson doesn't feel uncomfortable about interacting with people-- part of being psychic is knowing people a lot better than anyone else typically gets to know each other-- but she feels completely out of sorts to be in a scenario such as speed friending. She socializes, sure. With other Judges. Not with civilians. There's much less of a script here, being honestly herself and with no trappings of being a Judge or a mutant or a psychic one to come with it. All that associated baggage... isn't here.

She gives a self-deprecating smile back, but there's nothing about her that implies a lack of confidence, just a healthy dose of self-awareness. ]
22nd century Earth, which isn't historical for me. I'm hoping to get some book recommendations out of this, given all the free time I'm about to have. [ What is a normal work schedule? It's sure gonna be something. ]
winscenario: (hundred sixty nine.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2017-06-06 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Well, for what it's worth, Jim isn't a civilian, not exactly. Not that he looks like anything but right now, in his casual clothes, relaxed stance and friendly smile. He's got no ship here, anyway, so the title of 'captain' feels a little less meaningful. ]

Well, 22nd century definitely counts as historical for me. I'm from the second half of the 23rd century, myself. [ He lifts an eyebrow at her remark. ] Not used to having a lot of free time on your hands, either?
wronganswer: (vidanda26)

[personal profile] wronganswer 2017-06-06 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She's not actively trying to scan anyone right now, instead preferring to let the conversation develop organically. Anderson is starting to relax more the longer she's here, but it's a slow process.

Wryly, ]
Not a lot of downtime, no. [ A more curious look. ] So... space travel? We were just starting to make real headway on colonizing, back home.

[ She knows it's not the same, that it's dimensional travel and not time travel, but that doesn't mean she's not interested to know what the next century would hypothetically bring on a different Earth. ]
winscenario: (ninety eight.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2017-06-08 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh— yes, that's definitely a thing. Deep space travel has been a reality for at least a hundred years in my world. We have established a number of colonies, but for the most part we've made contact with a number of different species from other inhabited planets in the galaxy.

[ He pauses for a moment, considering. Then he asks, if only to get a better notion of what she would or wouldn't know about, were she from the same reality he was. ] What year are you from, exactly? If you don't mind me asking.
wronganswer: (094)

[personal profile] wronganswer 2017-06-08 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
2132, [ she answers readily. ] We've made plenty of hostile sentient contact, but I'm stationed on Earth, so I don't see any of it. [ It's all distant news from the Space Corps.

This is totally off topic from literature, but Anderson is a bit relieved to speak to someone more used to her time period. Riverview so far is extremely colorful, almost bombastic to her senses, and it doesn't look too dated, but the muddle of things is disorienting. ]
winscenario: (forty eight)

[personal profile] winscenario 2017-06-09 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He nods, taking in the information, then tipping his head slightly. ] I don't think we're from the same world. Our first contact was back in 2063 with the Vulcan race, and most since then were largely peaceful. Even the ones between then and the time you came from.

[ It hasn't escaped his notice that they derailed from the topic a little, but they are getting to know each other, so he figures that doesn't matter much. Provided they get along, there should be plenty of time and opportunity to talk about other things. ]
wronganswer: (05)

[personal profile] wronganswer 2017-06-10 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
[ This is all just an excuse for Anderson to get more comfortable talking to normal people normally again. She's way out of practice. ]

Yeah-- figured it wasn't the same. One of the reasons I was curious to take up reading here. There must be books that don't exist at home. [ And she's a naturally curious person. Maybe it'll help her adjust to this society, too, through exposure. ]
winscenario: (hundred thirty one.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2017-06-11 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the same. I've found quite a lot of new reading material, both at the library and bookshops. Books from other universes, other points in time— that kind of thing. It's a great opportunity to expand your horizons.

[ Also, you know, Jim can be a bit of a bookworm. At least here he can have as many books as he wants without them becoming some kind of hazard like on board his ship. He could only keep so many books around when he was on the Enterprise. Here, it's a matter of time before he can be officially classified as a hoarder. (Just kidding. Probably.) ]

What's your favorite genre? Any specific author or book you've enjoyed more than others?
wronganswer: (220)

[personal profile] wronganswer 2017-06-15 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She's never really had a chance to get into classic lit, or do much reading for pleasure at all, hence her decision that this might be a good chance to change that. So she has a limited repertoire to draw from.

Although, tough as nails special forces sorts don't usually admit readily, ]
Roald Dahl. I found an old copy of Matilda when I was a kid, and I guess it stuck with me.

[ Anderson offers a wry smile. ] Not sure what you can do with that, but I'm all ears.
winscenario: (hundred thirty.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2017-06-20 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Jim lights up at the name, grinning and nodding. ] Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! God, one of my favorites growing up. It was so much fun.

[ Even now he still enjoyed reading those stories, even if he knows they're children's books. He doesn't really care. ]

I'm sure I don't have to suggest Alice in Wonderland to you. [ It's pretty widely known after all, even where he comes from. ] I also really liked Mark Twain. Oh, did you ever read The Little Prince?
wronganswer: (vidanda29)

[personal profile] wronganswer 2017-06-20 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She blinks. ]

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Is that something else by him? [ She didn't exactly have a wide range of books available when she was a kid. Poor as dirt would be the appropriate expression, and libraries were not something the cities funded so close to the wall. ]

I've read Alice in Wonderland and the Little Prince, but not the other one... Twain? [ She's repeating it to try to get it in her memory. ]
winscenario: (sixty eight.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2017-06-21 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes— there were a few movies based on it, too. You've really never heard of it?

[ Jim shouldn't be so surprised. Different Earths, after all— maybe in hers these titles just aren't as popular. They might've not ever even been written or published at all, for whatever reason. ]

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn were arguably the most popular works from Twain. Do they ring any bells to you?
wronganswer: (1986731 (4))

[personal profile] wronganswer 2017-06-21 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No-- to both. But there's a lot of things that didn't survive our nuclear war, [ she answers with a shrug.

Not to mention censorship. Who knows what is still around but has been eradicated by the government. Anderson would credit them with nearly anything. Just because she works for them and enforces their laws doesn't make her a mindless sycophant. ]

Where do you think I should start? [ She's a little surprised, and secretly shyly pleased, that the one book she'd latched onto as a kid had opened up so much like this. She'd never really thought about it since then. ]
winscenario: (seventy two.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2017-06-24 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Jim nods. That about explains everything to him, and it all makes a lot more sense. Even without her mentioning any sort of censorship, he can imagine a nuclear war would destroy a whole lot of records, digital or otherwise. ]

Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, absolutely. Provided you can find them here, that's my first suggestion. These are mostly children's books, though. I can come up with a few other titles in different genres. More serious stuff. You can always give them a try and see if they're your sort of thing.
