introductory mingle: MEMORIA
what: Introductory Log and Memoria Commemoration
when: May 1st - May 8th
where: Anywhere around the city.
warnings: please put any necessary warnings in the subject lines

In the days leading up to May 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Memoria. A more solemn celebration than Sampremi or the Flower Festival, Memoria is a week-long time of remembrance for those lost in the Great War and the epidemic that decimated Riverview Quarantine's population 10 years ago. Memoria traditions include lighting lanterns for the dead, telling stories about lost loved ones or lost homes, eating meals with loved ones, and a special gathering to send floating lanterns down the river in honor of those lost.

While the main city-wide event associated with Memoria is the floating of lanterns down the river on the evening of May 8th, the holiday is generally seen as a time of reflection on and appreciation of things that have been lost - people, homes, cultures, and planets. It is also a celebration of the things that remain. Many locally-owned shops will host displays of culturally-significant food, and will hand out informational flyers sharing the unique customs of their own homeworlds. There is a heavy emphasis on sharing time with family, friends, and lovers, and anyone who is able to will cook meals or treats for loved ones, or at least purchase them something good to eat.
i. hanging lanterns
Throughout the entire week of Memoria, residents will be hanging lanterns around the city. Lanterns are generally placed in greater number in places of passage - streets, bridges, and all alongside the train lines are particularly well-decorated, as are any trees alongside paths, and most homes and businesses have a profusion of lanterns around their doors and windows. This tradition is twofold; some people believe that the lanterns are hung in these places in order to guide the spirits of the dead back to those who still love them, other people believe that the lanterns are to give light for living loved ones to find their doors in times of darkness...many people believe both.
No matter what your character might believe, you can be sure they will find themselves offered a lantern for free from various businesses or friendly citizens passing by, and invited to hang it before the sun sets, or they may be handed a bundle of lanterns and asked to help share them with others.
ii. sharing life
Throughout the city, characters will find groups of people gathering to share hot drinks and talk about their loved ones lost, their homes and planets, or their experiences during the Great War and the epidemic. Anyone who has lost someone, who has fought to survive, who is feeling cut off and homesick, is welcome to sit and share their story. If your character chooses to sit and to share their story, they will find that people will gather to listen, will generally be respectful of the telling, and may share their own similar experiences in return. This is an excellent time to air grief in an environment where most people understand and respect grief, and a good time to deepen the connections to others around you, to understand them better.
There is also a very large focus on cooking or purchasing meals or treats for loved ones during Memoria, with many people taking meals with everyone they care about during the week of the holiday. Some go the extra mile and will hand out baked goods (usually chocolate or cinnamon), packets of candy, or other little treats to acquaintances, especially if they would like to form a closer bond with them. This is a great time for characters to reach out to someone they would like to get to know better with a surprise treat!
iii. floating of the lanterns
On the evening of May 8th, just before sundown, many of the city's residents will head toward the banks of the river, where they will light lanterns in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, in honor of their dead loved ones. The types of lanterns vary wildly, based on personality (either of the person floating it or the person they are honoring), culture, and many other factors. Some lanterns are very simple, others are incredibly complex, but the one common feature they all have is that people write on the shades of them - they write about their feelings for their loved ones, their wishes for their relationships and friendships, a memory from childhood or home, or even just lines of poetry or lyrics from songs that express something they miss, or something that hurts them.
Once those emotions are written on the lanterns, the lanterns are set free, floating down the river in the darkening evening, in a cathartic gesture shared by most residents of the city. Waves of lantern floating will start around 7 pm and continue until the sun rises on the morning of May 9th.
iv. roommates or wildcard
Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during Memoria, feel free to write it up!

Unfortunately, the person he really knows here is the person who would want to comfort him the least. Such is life.
He happens upon Loki by accident, but he approaches when he realises who it is. He stands back in silence, watching him conjure the orb and mutter to it as it floats up into the sky.
Initially, Loki's words makes Thor's gut clench with irritation. He's about ready to give him a smack, and he nearly does when he steps toward him, but he thinks about what Frigga would say and he lets it go for the moment.]
Is it not enough to fool everyone else, Loki? Do you need to fool yourself, as well?
no subject
He will not give himself away. Oh, but how it bites for Thor to be here, Thor who saw their mother last, who witnessed the funeral while Loki languished.
( the truth bites but loki forces it down ) ]
I spoke nothing but the truth, Thor. Surely my birthright is clear as day.
no subject
She raised you as her own, she fed you, she clothed you, she read you stories and held you when you cried. Is that not what a mother does?
[He supposes Loki does have some sort of internal crisis about his heritage, so he relents.] You do not need to alter the title she carried for all those years, you know that her feelings for you never changed.
no subject
[ She had to do it in secret. Loki was her hidden shame. Asgard's shame. And Loki's own deeply rooted shame, tied to skin and bone. His own mask that he cannot shed. Frigga had seen past it all. Had deemed him worthy to hold Gungnir in his hands.
And he had caused her death. What would Thor say to that? ]
Her feelings should have changed. Everyone else's did. Being the exception gave her nothing in return.
[ How dearly he wished she had given up on him. There would be no guilt, no pain. Just the truth. ]
no subject
[He steps a little closer, if only so he can watch the little orb float upward. It's so far away, he can barely see it. It's as far out of his reach as she is, and it hurts.]
Perhaps too kind. [He does spare Loki a rather pointed look, though he knows he's only indulging his bitterness by doing so. He fixes his attention back on the sky.]
There is hope yet for her to appear here.
no subject
[ Thor's old hope. How it stings now. Loki can barely recall the past now without the taint of his blood spilling over. Everything was called into question. Even if all of Asgard had not known, Loki was always different. ]
Then we can play one big happy family. The mother, the son and the monster hiding under the bed.
no subject
There are precious few people here from our world, you know. Not Asgard nor Midgard... Apart from our new siblings, I suppose. [He trails off momentarily, if only because he's so befuddled.]
There is nothing that prevents you from doing as you wish. So long as what you wish is not supreme leadership, naturally. Why not take the opportunity?
no subject
I wish I could have touched her. You and the rest keep saying what — [ He bites it off with a muted snarl. They all kept saying blood ties didn't matter. ] — You should have let me say goodbye.
no subject
It was not my decision to make. [He says, but he knows he could have fought harder.]
If you were to escape? To use the opportunity to use your tricks and run? [He shakes his head, but he's sticking to his guns here.] You know that I love you, but you have earned your distrust.
no subject
Keep your love, Odinson. Between you and the All-Father, I think I will be safer and wiser without it.
[ For a brief moment, he considers snuffing out the lanterns with his powers, a last glorious petty move. But there would be no satisfaction in it, so Loki moves instead to walk angrily past Thor. ]
no subject
He can take the blame for many things, for many ways he was cruel to Loki and disregarded him in times of need, but he cannot hold himself accountable for holding Loki accountable.]
Loki- [He says it firmly, like he's chiding a child, frustration mounting as Loki passes him by. He does what any Thor would do in this situation, he yells.] Go on then, leave! Build your walls, push everyone away and hold onto your anger- What do you think will come of it, Loki? What would you have me do?
no subject
I would have you not toy with me! Why ask me for hope and wishes if all you seek to do is undermine them?
[ His voice is sharp and brittle like Loki will snap in two if he continues to speak. His fingers lash out to curl themselves tightly over Thor's clothes, ready to rend and shake. ]
Which is it, Thor? You speak of justice but where is mine? Asgard robbed me of my life as I knew it. Who will pay for that? Who?
[ But he knew the answer. No one. The All-Father certainly won't step to admit his wrong. Thor won't. He will be denied in life and in death. His grip slackens as his own weariness sets in. Fighting with Thor yields nothing. If there were a suitable cage, Thor would put him there.
And Riverview is a cage. ]
no subject
When Loki grabs him, his expression darkens considerably. He doesn't flash teeth or growls, it's a simple furrow of his brow and intensity in his eyes, like a dog about to bite.]
Do you think that I can change the past? I cannot change what has been done and I cannot change what you have done. You made your choices, you knew there would be consequences.
[He's talking to a brick wall and he knows it, but where Loki becomes weary, Thor becomes angrier.]
You had a life. You had a family- you had me. Always! [He barks that last word out, wrenching himself backward now that Loki has let him go.]
Who do you want to pay for it? [He'll barely give him a moment to answer before he follows it up.] Answer me, Loki.
no subject
Everyone is the answer. Loki wants everyone to pay, anyone to pay. Where is his pound of flesh? Who will seek the truth for Loki? His voice is a low rasp. ]
Enough, Odinson. We've made ourselves painfully clear. Whatever I had, I deserved to lose. Your words are tiring.
[ He wants. He wants. He does not know but he wants. But it'll come to Loki eventually. Something will fill the hole. It had to. ]
no subject
Loki won't say, of course, and Thor dares not assume why. Whether it's because Loki has something bigger planned for him or because he simply wants nothing more to do with him is hard to say.
At this particular moment, Thor wants nothing more to do with this conversation. He's frustrated with no outlet and he feels like he's running around in a circle like a dog chasing his tail.]
That I can agree with, but nothing more. It is tiring. [He's starting to look weary himself. Defeated, even. It's a rare expression for him, and he steps back so Loki knows he has disengaged.]
Go. Do as you please. [Within reason, is the unsaid addition.]
no subject
And Loki had only wanted to remember what was once his.
He stalks away into the night, frustration biting at his heels, the slow curdle of anger once against aflame in his chest. ]
